The Mets lose a wild one in the nations capital

The New York Mets were defeated by the Washinton Nationals by the score of 7-6 in 12 innings on Tuesday night. Chris Young started for the Mets, making his 2012 season debut. Young pitched ok for the Mets and the bullpen blew three different leads. Jordan Zimmerman started for the Nationals and pitched pretty well. The Nationals bullpen also pitched pretty well. Scott Hairston, David Wright, Josh Thole and Jordany Valdespin each had good days at the plate. Bryce Harper was the star of the game for the Nationals as he had the game winning hit.

Young pitched five innings giving up six hits and three runs with two of them being earned. He walked one and struck out two. The Mets used five relievers to pitch 6 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and three runs. They walked five and struck out nine batters. Zimmerman pitched six innings giving up five hits and two runs with five strikeouts. The Nationals used seven relievers to pitch six innings giving up five hits and four runs. They walked five and struck out three.

Scott Hairston had two hits, an RBI and a walk, Andres Torres had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk and David Wright had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk. Lucas Duda had a hit, Ike Davis drew a walk and Thole had two hits. Vinny Rottino drew a walk, Jordany Valdespin had two hits and an RBI. Valdespin and Torres each had a double. Valdespin, Wright and Hairston each hit a homerun. The Mets were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and they left eight men on base. Hairston had a stolen base, Quintanilla and Valdespin each committed an error.

Lombardozzi drew a walk, Bernadina had a hit and Xavier Nady drew a walk. Bryce Harper had two hits and two RBI, Ryan Zimmerman had two hits and an RBI and Michael Morse had two hits and drew a walk. Ian Desmond had two hits and three RBI, Espinosa had a hit and Jesus Flores had a hit and drew two walks. Zimmerman had two hits and Detwiler drew a walk. Morse had two doubles, Zimmerman and Desmond each had a double. The Nationals were 7-20 with runners in scoring position and they left 14 men on base. Espinsoa and Flores each had a stolen base. Flores had a passed ball.

Harper hit an RBI single in the third to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. Zimmerman hit a two run single in the fifth to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead. In the sixth Valdespin and Wright each hit a solo homerun to make it 3-2 Nationals. In the eighth Torres hit a two run double giving the Mets a 4-3 lead. Desmond hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at four. In the tenth the Mets scored on a wild pitch to take a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the tenth Desmond reached on a fielding error by Valdespin. The game was tied at five. In the 12th Hairston hit a two run homerun to give the Mets a 7-5 lead. Desmond hit an RBI double and Harper hit an RBI single. The hit was a game winning hit.

The Mets record dropped to 31-25 on the season and the Nationals improved their record to 31-22 on the season. The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Wednesday night.
