Yankees Revisit Days of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig with Win Against Rangers | Breaking News WorldNewsVine

Here is my article on todays Yankees game. Yankees Revisit Days of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig with Win Against Rangers Breaking News WorldNewsVine

Yankees win another series

The Yankees had a fairly easy win today 7-3. A.J. Burnett pitched 7 shutout inning giving up 6 hits with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. Him and Jorge Posada have put back to back strong outings together ending the talk of them not being able to work well together. The Yankees really showed off their patience and ability to wear out pitchers today. Scott Feldman was out of the game in the 3rd inning throwing over 70 pitches. The Yankees had the bases loaded and Nick Johnson walked to give them the 1-0 lead, Mark Teixiera got a broken bat infield single which was much needed. He made it 2-0 and then Gardner had a infield hit and a stolen base after with a throwing error by the catcher to make it 4-0. Derek Jeter capped off the third inning with a 2 run homerun to make it 6-0. Alex Rodriguez hit his first homerun of the year in the 4th to make it 7-0. The Rangers scored their only runs in the 8th with a 3 run homerun by Nelson Cruz off of Alfredo Aceves. Aceves who looked rusty from not pitching gave up 2 hits and 3 runs in 1/3 of an inning. Damaso Marte got both of the guys he faced out and Joba Chamberlain finished off the game with a 1-2-3 inning with 2 strikeouts. The scary thing about the Yankees being off to this great start is that they aren't even hitting on all cylinders yet. Mark Teixeira is hitting 100, A-rod just hit his first homerun of the year today. Nick Johnson isn't hitting yet although he is drawing lots of walks and Javier Vazquez has 2 of the teams 3 losses. They are off to their best start in 7 years and as it was all spring their isn't any chaos at all. It is truly a happy clubhouse and team with nothing to talk about other then winning baseball. I will have some postgame stuff shortly with my article that I wrote for Worldnewsvine.

Regular Season Game 11-Mets at Cardinals

The New York Mets will try and even up their 3 game series with the Cardinals today at 4:00PM. Here are some notes and the lineups for todays game. Johan Santana will face Jaime Garcia. Jeff Francoeur has a 10 game hitting streak to start the yr which is second in franchise history. David Wright is first with a 14 game hitting streak to start last season. Francoeur leads the majors with a 535 on base percentage. He is second in batting average at 457 and 4th with a 857 slugging percentage. The Mets have to win the next 2 games to avoid losing their first 4 series for the first time since 1997. Since 2004 Johan Santana leads the majors in wins(100), era(2.87), strikeouts(1343) and batting avg against(219). Pedro Feliciano needs one more appearance to make it 373 which would be 4th on the all time Mets list ahead of Jesse Orosco. Mets Lineup: Reyes(SS) Castillo(2B) Wright(3B) Bay(LF) Francoeur(RF) Tatis(1B) Barajas(C) Pagan(CF) Santana(P)

Regular Season Game 11-Rangers at Yankees

The New York Yankees will look to take their second in a row against Texas and win their 4th straight series to start the year. A.J. Burnett will be opposing Scott Feldman weather permitting of course. The Yankees won a rain shortened game last night 5-1 in 6 innings behind CC Sabathia. Here are the lineups and some game notes for todays game at 1:05PM. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Johnson(DH) Teixeira(1B) Rodriguez(3B) Cano(2B) Posada(C) Granderson(CF) Swisher(RF) Gardner(LF) Rangers Lineup: Borbon(CF) Young(3B) Hamilton(LF) Guerrero(DH) Cruz(RF) Davis(1B) Arias(2B) Teagarden(C) Andrus(SS) Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter last night became the first set of Yankees teammates to start the yr hitting safely in 10 straight games. Thanks to Elias for that information. If Joe Girardi can get a win today it will be his 200th as a Yankees manager. Today marks the 59th anniversary of the very first game legendary PA announcer Bob Sheppard worked. I am sure there will be a ceremony for him, he has been ill and not working in a couple of yrs but he watches the games and is always thought of around the ballpark. Curtis Granderson will be presented with the 2009 Marvin Miller man of the year award before todays game. Mark Teixiera will present it to him. Tex is the Yankees player association representative. The Yankees have not comitted an error in 8 straight games, they set the record with 18 straight last season. They have also scored 3 or more runs in all 10 games this season. That marks the longest they have gone since the 2000 season when that team did it in 15 straight games.

Mets waste strong effort by Perez

The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals this evening by the score of 4-3. Oliver Perez pitched brilliantly for 6 1/3 innings. He gave up 4 hits and 1 run with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. He had a 1-0 lead in the 7th and the bullpen gave it up. Raul Valdez gave up a grandslam in the 7th to give the Cardinals the 4-1 lead. The Mets did comeback in the 9th with a couple of runs but that was it. They wasted a strong effort out of Oliver Perez, the hitting once again just couldn't get it going. Jeff Francoeur was the only player to have multiple hits. I don't think the Mets offense is going to be a problem but so far on this young season it has been especially with runners in scoring position. The pitching has to be better but it was there tonight and they still lost the game. They will play game 2 of the 3 game series tomorrow afternoon. The game is at 4:10 with Johan Santana looking to bounce back from a rough outing last time out.

Yankees win rain shortened Game

The New York Yankees won a rain shortened 6 inning game tonight. The final score was 5-1 and CC Sabathia was great again. He pitched 6 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits, 0 walks and 9 strikeouts. Joe Girardi and Francisco Cervelli who caught him again tonight thought he was even better this time out. Here is what Girardi had to say "That's about as good as we have seen him. 73 pitches and 58 strikes? It seemed like his first 10 or 12 pitches were all strike tonight. He was outstanding." He had a couple of hits given up in the first inning but other then that he breezed right through a powerful Texas lineup. He retired 11 straight at one point and struck out 6 straight at one point. Here is what Cervelli said "I think he pitched better today, he was throwing nasty pitches." Cervelli and him really have a good chemistry going together, CC says it is because they are constantly talking even when neither of them are playing in the game. Cervelli says that CC doesn't treat him like a rookie, more like a veteran catcher, he tells Cervelli just call your game and I will follow you. It really is great for a young rookie catcher to be catching outstanding games from the ace of the team, his confidence will only grow. He also contributed offensively with a rbi single and infield single. Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano became the first set of Yankees teammates to start off a season with 10 game hitting streaks, congratulations to them. Mark Teixeira continues to struggle but that is his track record in April and then by the end of the year his numbers are there. Marcus Thames continues to hit lefties and I think we have a platoon situation going on in left field. The two teams will meet in Game 2 of the 3 game series tomorrow afternoon with A.J. Burnett on the mound.

Regular Season Game 10-Mets at Cardinals

The New York Mets will begin a 3 game series with the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at 8:15PM. Johan Santana will be on the mound. According to Brian Costa of the Star Ledger Ryota Igarashi is the 8th inning guy tonight and will get a chance to prove himself in that role. Also according to metsblog.com GM Omar Minaya was quoted as saying he would take 1 win in St. Louis although 2 out of 3 would be great. Here are the pregame notes and lineup for tonights game. Oliver Perez will make the start against Chris Carpenter. Mets Lineup: Reyes(SS) Castillo(2B) Wright(3B) Bay(LF) Jacobs(1B) Francoeur(RF) Barajas(C) Matthews(CF) Perez(P)

Regular Season Game 10-Rangers at Yankees

The New York Yankees will take on the Texas Rangers in game 1 of a 3 game series. This game is weather permitting as their are thunderstorms in the forecast and a 80 percent chance of rain. I looked outside and it is dark out there. Here are the lineups and some notes for the game if it is played tonight. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Johnson(DH) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Cano(2B) Swisher(RF) Thames(LF) Granderson(CF) Cervelli(C) CC Sabathia is starting opposite C.J. Wilson for the Rangers. The Yankees are 6-3 which is their best 9 game start since 2003 when they were 8-1. They won their first 3 series for first time since 2003. Robinson Cano completed his 5th multi homerun game last night. Granderson tripled twice in same game for 5th time in his career. Cano and Jeter have both hit safely in first 9 games, the last yankees teammates to do that were Jeter and Matsui in 2006. No Yankees teammates have ever done it in the first 10 games. Yesterdays game marked the first time a yankee had 2 homeruns and another had 2 triples in the same game since 4/24/60 when Elston Howard and Tony Kubeck did it. Joe Girardi needs 2 more wins for 200 in his career as a manager. Jeter is 2 doubles shy of tying Don Mattingly with 442 for 3rd on alltime Yankees list.

Yankees Take Another Series with Some Long Ball | Breaking News WorldNewsVine

Here is my Yankees article, I will have some postgame notes in a little while. I got home late from the game and wasn't able to do it then. Phil Hughes battled his control but was good in his first start and picked up the victory. The Yankees were powered by Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano who hit 2 homeruns. Curtis Granderson showed off the speed with 2 triples in a game. He also threw someone out at homeplate which is great to see from an outfielder on the team. I think he is a teriffic CF and will be a good Yankee. The Yankees have a 3 game series with the Texas Rangers before heading off to the West Coast. CC Sabathia will be on the mound this evening. Mets Achieve Much Needed Victory | Breaking News WorldNewsVine

Here is the article I did on yesterday afternoons Mets game, I was at the Yankee game that is why I got to it so late. The Mets got a huge start out of Mike Pelfrey and although the Mets once again weren't great with runners in scoring position they did score 5 runs. Jason Bay had a hit and rbi and maybe now he will start to heat up which would be a huge boost to the team. They need more good starting pitching like that to feel good about themselves and maybe they can actually win a couple of games in St. Louis. Mets Achieve Much Needed Victory Breaking News WorldNewsVine

Yankees Roster Move

The Yankees placed reliever Chan Ho Park on the 15 day DL today and called up left handed reliever Boone Logan. It is more precautionary then anything but better to let him rest and not hurt it more. Boone Logan had a great spring and deserved to make it but didn't, he has pitched well in AAA and will get an oppurtunity now. The weather doesn't look good right now but it isn't pouring so hopefully they will get this game in tonight.

Regular Season Game 9-Angels at Yankees

The New York Yankees take on the Anaheim Angels from Yankee Stadium tonight at 7:00PM. This game is the rubber game of their 3 game series. The Yankees won the first one by the score of 7-5 and the Angels won yesterdays game by the score of 5-3. Phil Hughes is making his season debut opposite Scott Kazmir who is also making his season debut. Here are some pregame notes and the lineup. The Yankees have scored 3 or more runs in all of their games this season. Today is Jackie Robinson day across baseball. His family will be at the game for a pregame ceremony. Mariano Rivera is the last player wearing the number as it was retired across baseball in 1997. The Yankees have not comitted a error in their last 6 games. I think their defense is improved from last year, their infield is arguably the best in baseball and now their outfield is solid as well. Jorge Posada needs 2 more hits to reach 15oo on his career. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Swisher(RF) Teixeira(1B) Rodriguez(3B) Cano(2B) Posada(C) Thames(DH) Granderson(CF) Winn(LF) This is a new look lineup as Winn gets his first start and Swisher is batting second for the first time. Marcus Thames will face a lefty again which is interesting.

Regular Season Game 9-Mets at Rockies

The New York Mets will try and salvage a game in Colorado this afternoon. Mike Pelfrey will be making the start. Here is the Mets lineup for todays game. Mets Lineup: Reyes(SS) Castillo(2B) Wright(3B) Bay(LF) Francoeur(RF) Tatis(1B) Blanco(C) Pagan(CF) Pelfrey(P) Jorge De La Rosa is the starting pitcher for the Rockies. Today is the 63rd anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier and making his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers. In honor everyone in baseball today will wear #42. The Mets lost their 3rd straight series which was the first time since 1997. Jeff Francoeur has collected at least one hit in the first 8 games. The Mets are 4th in the NL with 36 walks. They have also given up 36 walks which is 4th most in the NL. The Mets bullpen has been a bright spot so far with the 2nd best era in the majors. They have a 2.08 era. Their starters though have a 6.91 era which is 28th out of the 30 teams. They need starting pitching and that will be their downfall all year if they don't find pitching or someone they haven't doesn't step it up. David Wright is 6 hits away from tying Howard Johnson for 8th on the Mets all time hits list. He is 2 doubles shy of tying Edward Kranepool for the team record with 225.

Mets Lose Heartbreaker on Walkoff in 10th | Breaking News WorldNewsVine

This was a good game and the Mets showed some fight coming back in the 8th and 9th innings but after blowing a chance for the lead in the 10th they gave up a walkoff and the game was over. The Mets have now lost 4 in a row and are in big danger of falling way behind quickly. It is only 8 games into the season and they are already 5 games back of the Phillies who are 7-1 and with many injuries still find a way to win. The question now is how long will Jerry Manuel last, if they don't win a game on this roadtrip he may not make it back to Citi Field. The other question is who would replace him and how long does Omar Minaya get?? The worst thing for the Mets is that after Joel Piniero totally shut down the Yankees he said he was almost a met but they acted wierdly and didn't go the extra mile to get him. I wonder if the Wilpons are regretting that now, The Mets will play this afternoon and try and get a win before heading to St. Louis. Yankees Postgame Notes

Javier Vazquez wasn't great but I don't know if he deserved the boos he received today. Javier didn't pitch particularly well but the fans are remembering him more for what he did his last time around in 2004. They aren't going to give him much of a chance because of that and it is something that Vazquez will have to work through. Here is what Joe Girardi said "As soon as he can get a win here, I think it will be best for all of us. Fans they remember, his next start will be on the road and it would be nice to get him a win and on a roll. Today we didn't score many runs, he could of won that game as well if we would of scored some runs today." Vazquez said it was "disappointing" to hear the boos but was upset with himself mostly. He was pressed by the media and finally admitted he thinks it is too early to be booed. Derek Jeter said "The bottom line is, they are Yankee fans. They want to cheer for you, they come here to cheer for you. Everyone has been booed at some point. You can't let it affect you. If Javy gives up three runs everytime he pitches he is going to have a pretty good year." Nick Swisher said this about Joel Piniero "I can remember him from back when he was with Seattle. He was a power guy, threw really hard. Now he still has that power in there but is using it more for movement. He threw some great sinkers today. Just when you think it is going to be in the zone it falls off the table." Robinson Cano has hit safely in all 8 games this season and has more multi hit games then one hit games. He has 5 multi hit games. Scott Kazmir will come off the DL tomorrow to make the start against the Yankees. Thanks to Chad Jennings for providing the quotes on his Lohud Yankees Blog.

Angels Joel Piniero Stymies New York Yankees | Breaking News WorldNewsVine

The Yankees were completely shut down by Joel Piniero and then scored a couple of runs off Scott Shields to get back into the game late. Javier Vazquez was better but not great and heard the boos. Here is my article from todays game. I will have some postgame reaction and notes in a little while, so check back for that. Angels Joel Piniero Stymies New York Yankees Breaking News WorldNewsVine

Regular Season Game 8-Yankees Vs Angels

Here are the pregame notes. Some of these are from Chad Jennings who was in the clubhouse this morning. He works for the Journal News and also has the great Lohud Yankees Blog. I apologize that the game posts are backwards, the second one appears first and then the first one second. Robinson Cano has hit safely in all 7 games this season. Nick Johnson was the first Yankee to go at least 6 seasons in between homeruns yesterday since Ruben Sierra did it. He hit one in 1996 and then not again until 2003. Dave Robertson was his usual self in the clubhouse today. He has a short memory which is what you need as a reliever. He gave up a grand slam yesterday but said today is a new day. I didn't realize it yesterday but Nick Swisher was given a fake ring and was shocked to see it but wore it the whole time. Mariano Rivera gave him the real thing after the ceremony. Joe Girardi said that Vazquez was rushing in his first start which caused his arm slot to drop and "his fastball was running too much back across the middle of the plate." Joe Girardi said he is excited to see Phil Hughes on the mound tomorrow night. "I think he is much more physically and mentally prepared." He was talking about now as compared to 2008. Joe Girardi at the end of his press conference was asked how many rings he would like to win and said, Yogi has 10 and I am sure he would like to win another. He was basically saying as many as he can. It is the Yankee way to always want more and keep trying to win which is good to see that there is no complacency.

Regular Season Game 8-Yankees vs Angels Part 2

I decided to break up the game posts since the notes section was long. Here are both teams lineups for todays game. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Johnson(DH) Teixeira(1B) Rodriguez(3B) Cano(2B) Posada(C) Granderson(CF) Swisher(RF) Gardner(LF) Angels Lineup: Aybar(SS) Abreu(RF) Hunter(CF) Matsui(DH) Morales(1B) Rivera(LF) Izturis(2B) Mathis(C) Wood(3B) Javier Vazquez makes the start against Joel Piniero.

John Maine NY Mets Lose 11-3 to Colorado Rockies | Breaking News WorldNewsVine

Here is the recap of last nights Mets game in case you missed it. If you did miss it you may have been better off. The Mets are off to a very bad start and who knows how long before the Jerry Manuel watch will begin. the bottom line though is they just don't have the starting pitching. The offense suprisingly hasn't done much either but I think that is the least of their worries. Let me know what you think Mets fans. It is still early so don't panic yet but they need to win a couple games soon and get that good feeling going. John Maine NY Mets Lose 11-3 to Colorado Rockies Breaking News WorldNewsVine

Emotional Day New York Yankees Win Home Opener | Breaking News WorldNewsVine

It was a great day in the Bronx and I was there to cover it. You can read my article below, I posted the link to World News Vine where as you know I am the sportswriter for them. Andy Pettitte looked good today as he pitched 6 shutout inning and Chan Ho Park pitched 2 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 run. Dave Robertson made the game interesting in the ninth when he gave up a grand slam to Bobby Abreu but maybe it was meant to be. Mariano Rivera got to come in and close out the game with 2 easy outs. The offense was really good as everyone got involved. Jorge Posada had 3 hits including passing Mickey Mantle on the all time Yankees doubles list. A-rod had 2 hits, Derek Jeter had 2 hits and Curtis Granderson also. Let me know what you guys think about how the day went, read all about it. The one striking thing to me about the whole day was walking out of the garage and seeing what is left of the old stadium, nothing. It is just ruins as Joe Girardi said and a very sad sight indeed. It is now real that this is the home and there is no turning back. Last year definitely helps since there were so many good memories and the Yankees got yr 2 started off right. They have won 11 of their last 12 only dropping last yrs home opener at the New Stadium. 5 time all star Bernie Williams will become the 9th former yankee to throw out the first pitch at a home opener. The Yankees annual homecoming dinner was last night and raised 1.3 million which is a alltime record. The Yankees became the 3rd team to win a world series in their first yr in a ballpark. The Boston Red Sox did it in 1912 and the Cardinals in 2006. CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett have pitched back to back 21 times since joining the Yankees and the team has only lost both games 1 time. The bullpen has been strong giving up 2 runs and 2 walks in their last 13 2/3 innings. They have gone 2-0 with a 1.32 era in that stretch. Yankees postgame Notes.

Here are some of the postgame notes from the Yankees game today. A.J. Burnett had a rough first inning, giving up 2 singles, 2 stolen bases a sac bunt and a walk. Pitching Coach Dave Eiland went out to the mound to talk to him and said "You have good stuff, we are still in the game. Continue to attack, don't pick, take charge." Burnett said he didn't think his stuff was that good today but that Eiland and Posada told him otherwise and he trusted them. It is only 2 games but Posada and Burnett have worked pretty well together so far which is a good thing. There was a weird play in the 6th inning when Evan Longoria hit a pop up which should of been the final out of the inning. It hit a catwalk though and was ruled a hit. Jorge Posada who is always outspoken had this to say "It's not a baseball stadium. You can't have balls going all over the place, it's sad." Posada said that Burnett threw 5 changeups today and he expects even more as he gets used to it. "It is a swing and miss pitch, it really is." Posada said. Burnett was asked if he wears his Marlins World Series ring and he said no, they said will you wear your Yankees one and he said "Absolutely." Brett Gardner and Curtis Granderson are tied for the league lead in stolen bases with 3 each. They can certainly run and you will see that a lot this year when they are on base. The Yankees have a workout tomorrow at the stadium and then the welcome home dinner in the evening. They will receive their rings on Tuesday and raise the championship banner. Bernie Williams will throw out the first pitch and their will be a fly over. It will be a special day at the stadium and I will be there to cover it all. I can't wait to get there and provide you guys with some good coverage of the Opening Day festivities.

The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays will play the rubber game of their 3 game series. The Rays won the first game on Friday night by the score of 9-3 and the Yankees won yesterday by the score of 10-0. Here are the lineups and the game notes. The Yankees will play 32 of their first 51 games against teams that had a winning record in 2009. The Yankees start their home schedule on Tuesday with the opener against the Angels. They had the majors best winning percentage at home last year. They were 57-24 which is a 704 winning percentage. They topped the AL in attendance for the 7th straight year.
