New York Mets Recap

The New York Mets were defeated by the Atlanta Braves by a score of 12-1 today. John Maine got the start and got rocked, I wonder if the Mets are starting to worry about him. He threw 4 innings giving up 5 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks. Nelson Figueroa also had a rough day going 1 inning giving up 5 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks. Ron Villone pitched 1 inning giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. Bobby Kielty had the best day for the offense going 3-4 with a rbi, Nick Evans was 1-4. Ryan Church was 2-3. Daniel Murphy was 0-3.

Yankees Recap and Notes

The New York Yankees won their 9th straight game by a score of 4-3 over the Detroit Tigers. It is too bad this doesn't count but once again they had a strong day pitching which im sure will be much of the same during the regular season and should lead to many wins. I wouldn't be suprised to see the Yankees run off streaks in the regular season like they have in spring training. Joba Chamberlain got the start today and went 3 1/3 innings giving up 1 run, 4 hits and 5 strikeouts. He threw 61 pitches, he said after the game that he needs to stop nibbling although he feels great and is coming along. His biggest problem is he throws too many pitches but as he gets more and more experience that will come. He is the 5th starter so if he gives them 5-6 innings a game they will take it. Mo made another appearance and needed 12 pitches to get 4 outs but he did give up a hit today. Jon Albaladejo continued his strong work throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings giving up 3 hits with 1k. Edwar Ramirez gave up 2 hits a walk and a run in his one inning with 1k. It was his worst outing but he has looked good since coming back from his shoulder issue. Jose Veras pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout. Offense: Melky Cabrera had a good day going 2-3. Brett Gardner was 1-1 coming in later in the game, Johnny Damon was 1-3 with a rbi double. Mark Teixera was 1-2 with a rbi double and a walk. Juan Miranda hit a 2 run hr, Hideki Matsui was 0-2 but had a walk, Cody Ransom and Angel Berroa were both 1-3. The Yankees will travel to Port Charlotte tomorrow to take on the Tampa Bay Rays, CC Sabathia will stay behind and pitch in a minor league game while Alfredo Aceves will get the start. MO will take two days off, he said he feels great and only needs 5 or 6 more 1 inning appearances before the season starts. He said everytime out he feels stronger. Joe Girardi praised Phil Hughes saying he had a great spring, he was attacking the strike zone, they just ran out of innings for him in big leauge camp because he needs to pitch deeper into games, this isn't the last you will see of him this year you watch. I think he will have a bigger impact on the team then people think. I can see him going to AAA dominating and something happening whether its an injury or Joba struggling and he will be up with the team again. After the game the Yankees optioned Francisco Cervelli down to AA Trenton.

Bobby Parnell went 2 2/3 innings giving up 5 hits, 0 runs and 2 k's. The Mets also optioned Jon Niese to the minor leagues basically assuring that Livan Hernandez will be the 5th starter. The Mets will take on the Braves tomorrow with John Maine getting the start.

Recap of Yankees Action

The New York Yankees won another one, defeating the Minnesota Twins in Fort Myers by a score of 4-2. Phil Hughes got the start and went 4 1/3 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits and 1 walk. He said after the game that he felt good about his fastball command and felt good about his changeup. " My curve wasn't great but was usable. I did throw some good cutters. Overall I feel good, I feel strong, I'm ready to go." Jason Johnson pitched 1 2/3 inning giving up 3 hit, 1 run, 1 walk. Anthony Claggett pitched 1 inning only giving up a walk, Dave Robertson pitched 1 1/3 inning giving up 0 runs, 0 hits, 1 walk and 3 k's. Kei Igawa finished it off pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up 2 hits and a walk but keeping his scoreless streak alive which is now 12 2/3 innings. I wonder if anyone needs a left handed pitcher, any takers, anyone?? The offense had Brett Gardner going 1-3, Todd Linden going 1-2 with a hr. Robbie Cano was 1-3 and played 5 innings at second base. He handled two groundballs at second and turned a double play. He said he felt good, no pain and everything was perfect which is good news. Big Tex was 1-3 with his first hr of the spring and Austin Jackson also had a hr. Shelly Duncan had another hit to continue his hot spring he is hitting 407, Hideki Matsui was 0-3. The Yankees have now won 8 straight, maybe they should slow down a little and make sure they do this against Baltimore and KC when the season starts. The Yankees will host the Detroit Tigers tomorrow with Joba getting the start at 1:15pm.

Spring Game 24: Yankees at Twins

Here is the lineups and pitchers for todays game in Fort Myers courtesy of Peter Abraham. Brett Gardner is back in CF, he was gone for personal reasons and that is why Melky was in there 3 days in a row. Phil Hughes has looked great this spring and gets the start today. Andy Pettitte will pitch to Jorge Posada in the minor league game in Tampa today, not making the long bus ride. Top prospect Austin Jackson starts in LF and has looked great this spring, if he starts off hot and Melky and Gardner aren't cutting it you could see him in the Bronx this year. I have also been impressed with Nunez the SS who is playing today. Spring Game 24: Yankees at Twins Posted using ShareThis

Yanks/Blue Jays Recap

The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 7-4. AJ Burnett made the start and didn't have his best stuff but battled for 3 1/3 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout. Brian Bruney pitched 1 1/3 innings and struggled mightily, giving up 2 hits, 2 runs and 4 walks. MO was well MO throwing a 1-2-3 inning on 5 pitches. Edwar Ramirez gave up 1 hit in 1 inning with a strikeout. Dan Giese gave up 4 hits and 1 run with 2 strikeouts. For the offense Nick Swisher playing 1st base tonight was 2-2 with a rbi, Jorge Posada was 1-3 with a rbi. Johnny Damon who is playing better of late was 1-2 with a walk, Hideki Matsui was 1-2 with a walk and a rbi. Super prospect Austin Jackson was 1-1 with a walk and showed off his arm in CF. Xavier Nady was 1-3 and Melky Cabrera was 1-3 with a rbi. Notes: Jorge Posada will catch Andy Pettitte in a minor league game tomorrow catching 2 days in a row for the first time. Hideki Matsui continues to play pretty much everday and his knees are holding up well. Mo looks great out there so everything is coming together. The biggest thing though is the pitching staff as a whole looks great and if they are healthy the Yankees are going to win lots of games. These notes are courtesy of Peter Abraham of the Journal News. Nick Swisher fouled a ball off of his leg and was scratched from tomorrows game but said he will be fine just a bruise. AJ Burnett joked about getting hit saying it was good it was John Macdonald that hit the ball. Joe Girardi said he couldn't tell if there was a mark on his arm because of the tattoos and AJ joked that if it wasn't for Bruce Lee on his arm he would be in trouble. AJ was happy he got in a little trouble saying they all can't be like the first 2 games he pitched, I am a human he said. He said the good thing is he made the pitches when he needed too and got to work with Jorge Posada for the first time. He said he still needs to work 0n his curveball or the hook as he calls it. MO because he only threw 5 pitches wanted to go out for another inning but they sent him to the pen to throw 10 more pitches instead. Jorge Posada will recieve a award from the Ted Williams Museum tomorrow night for his community service work, a dinner will be held in St. Petersburg.

Yankees lineup for tonights game

Here is the Yankees lineup for tonights game. 1. Posada(c) 2.Damon(lf) 3.Swisher(1b) 4. Matsui(dh) 5. Nady(rf) 6. Ransom(3b) 7. Cabrera(cf) 8. Berroa(2b) 9. Pena(ss) AJ Burnett gets the start against his former team followed by MO, Edwar Ramirez and Dan Giese. Don't forget the game is on YES tonight at 7:00pm. I don't know if anyone is going to the Cubs games to open the stadium April 3 and 4th but they went on presale today for the season ticket holders and will go on sale for everyone else I believe March 27th. I am pretty sure they will sell out by then, what I don't understand is why full season ticket holders get first dibs on the extra tickets, they already have them all including the Cubs games, it doesn't seem fair to me. If anyone has an opinion on this or some more information I would love to hear from you.

March Madness begins

Has everyone filled out their brackets, i know i have a couple of them I did online. At 12 this afternoon or shortly thereafter the NCAA Mens college basketball tournament otherwise known as March Madness begins. I don't really see too many upsets this year but the beauty of this tournament is you never know, in one game anything can happen. I do like the #1 teams which isn't saying much but I can see a Syracuse or maybe even a Duke or West Virginia going on a run but ultimately im not sure anyone can beat Pitt or Louisville. The top teams are just much better then the rest of the field but once you get past the top 4 or 5 anything can happen with the rest so enjoy March Madness and good luck with your brackets.

Arod and his amazing ability to get on the front and back pages

Alex Rodriguez was at it again appearing on the front page of the New York Post on Tuesday. The reason he was on there was because of a magazine shoot he did where he appears to be kissing himself in the mirror and then another picture of him sprawled out on a sofa looking at himself in the mirror. I know this guy is surrounded by many advisors but they are all hollywood type people and just continue to give him bad advice. The funny thing is though at this point when the team is asked about it much like Manny being Manny they say oh thats Alex. The guys at this point are getting good laughs out of it as they no doubt will have the pictures taped to his locker when he gets back and definitely take some good jabs at him for it. The difference between Arod and Manny though is Arod never quit on his team, he never dogs it on the field and he never has shoved down an older man. Alex actually is a good teammate even though he is always doing something to get attention away from the baseball field but that is just who he is and it doesn't affect anything on the field. I think it is good that he is away in Colorado and hopefully by time he gets back the team will be playing well and he can come back play baseball help them and not be such a distraction anymore.

Aaron Boone to have surgery

I should of mentioned this earlier but my thoughts and prayers go out to Aaron Boone and his family. He is going to be undergoing open heart surgery and his season is over and maybe his career. He is most remembered for his walk-off hr in the 2003 ALCS against Tim Wakefield and the Red Sox to send the New York Yankees to the World Series. I wish him well in whatever he does with what is hopefully a long life.

Yankees Recap

The New York Yankees defeated the Houston Astros today by a score of 4-1. Chieng-Ming Wang bounced back from a rough start his last time out and pitched 5 innings today giving up 1 run on 3 hits, 0 walks and 2 strikeouts. Phil Coke and Brett Tomko each pitched a scoreless inning giving up 1 hit. Jose Veras pitched a scoreless inning although he did walk 2 guys. Albaladejo finished it off with a perfect inning striking out one. Robbie Cano led the offensive attack going 2-4, Jose Molina also went 2-3. Mark Teixera went 1-2 with a walk. Angel Berroa was 1-3 with a rbi and Nick Swisher was 1-3. Austin Jackson the Yankees top prospect was 1-1. Former 1st round pick Eric Duncan was 1-1 with 2 rbi. He hasn't lived up to his potential and it seems he has been around forever but he is still one of the youngest players in AAA. Wang after the game was asked how he has been getting along with CC and AJ, he says he talks to AJ more because their lockers are close together. A reporter asked what does he tell you and Wang said bad things as everyone laughed, he said he won't get a tattoo because his mother would kill him. Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada are both a go for tomorrow nights game against the Blue Jays. The game will be on YES. I credit Peter Abraham for having the lineups and the post game chatter, he does a great job for the journal news and his blog at http://yankees.lhblogs.com so go check it out if you don't already. I just read that Kevin Youkilis went back to red sox camp with a bad ankle and will probably not continue in the WBC, how many guys on the US are getting hurt, this is crazy and that is the second Red Sox player, so we will have to keep an eye on that.

Spring Game 22: Yankees at Astros

So Wang gets the start today and the Astros wont let the Yankees use the DH. This should be bad flashbacks but when Wang gets up there he will not swing or run, hopefully he won't walk, if the pitcher falls behind he better just swing and miss on purpose. The team is coming together nicely but wont be full for a while still with Team USA and Jeter advancing. Arod of course is rehabbing but it has been nice and quiet without him and Cody Ransom is doing a great job filling in so far. Brett Tomko will pitch today and try to continue to impress for the long relief job which suddenly has a new entrant, none other then Kei Igawa who Joe Girardi says you cant help but notice. UPDATE: The Astros decided to let the Yankees use the DH so Robinson Cano is in there batting second and Wang is off the hook. Spring Game 22: Yankees at Astros Posted using ShareThis

Martin Broudeur the Record holder

I am not a NJ Devils fan but congratulations to Martin Brouder for breaking Patrick Roys record for most wins alltime for a goaltender. He did it at home which is always good by beating the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 tonight. My team the New York Rangers defeated the Montreal Canadiens in a shootout moving into sole possession of 6th place in the conference. Chris Drury scored the winning goal.

Good Night in Tampa

The New York Yankees injured players or I guess you would say rehab players now had a great night. Jorge Posada caught 5 innings went 1-3 and also got to throw to third and his shoulder felt fine. Hideki Matsui playing in his 4th straight game was 2-2 with a 2 run hr and a 2 run double. MO came in to pitch the 5th inning and had a 1-2-3 inning on 11 pitches. If these guys are healthy this team will be tough to beat as they have the pitching and their lineup will be lengthened and very good. CC Sabathia started and threw 4 great innings, giving up 1 run on 1 hit, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts, Edwar Ramirez threw a perfect inning with a strikeout. Alfredo Aceves competing for the long relief job pitched 3 innings giving up 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 1k. The rest of the offense had Damon and Teixera have a hit each. Robbie Cano was 1-3 with a rbi, Xavier Nady was 2-3, Melky was 1-3 with a rbi. Brett Gardner went 1-2. In a thrilling ending to the WBC matchup of Team USA vs Team Puerto Rico, Team USA won on a walkoff hit by David Wright and Derek Jeter won't be back yet. Did anyone see Arod in Details magazine?? I can't believe he would take pictures like that, and does anyone really believe he rides the subway to games on friday nights usually??

Spring Game 21: Pirates at Yankees

Happy St. Patricks Day. The big lefty gets the start tonight and is expected to go 4 innings followed by MO in his first appearance of the spring. I am talking about CC as the big lefty. This resembles a lineup you would see during the season, of course Jeter is with USA trying to advance tonight against Puerto Rico and Cano won't be in there until Friday although he has been pinch hitting. Jorge will catch 5 innings tonight and it will be good to see him on TV, I kind of want to see him try and throw a guy out at second. Matsui is in for the fourth straight day, so it looks like he will be ready for opening day and the season. Peter Abraham has the information in the link below of the lineups and pitchers and some notes. Spring Game 21: Pirates at Yankees Posted using ShareThis

Baseball News

It looks like Pudge Rodriguez is going to sign with the Houston Astros. 1 yr and 1.5 million is what I hear, boy have these prices on players dropped. I wonder what Roy Oswalt is thinking after criticizing so many steroid guys. Manny Ramirez is sidelined for at least one week, i wouldn't worry to much if your a Dodgers fan but his comments are a little strange saying maybe he is just getting too old and it might not be a good investment meaning his signing. Cole Hamels is going to get his elbow examined which im sure is just making the people of Philly go nuts. Randy Johnson of the Giants is nursing a sore arm and Ryan Braun is out with tightness on his right side. I am sure most of these GM's aren't too happy about the WBC and the injuries cropping up. If Cuba loses tonight they will be out, they haven't finished worse then third in any international competition in a long time, I wonder what will happen to them when they return home?

Recap of Todays Yankees action

The New York Yankees had a great day on the field defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 12-0. Joba Chamberlain started and went 3 shutout innings giving up 2 hits, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Brian Bruney pitched a scoreless inning giving up a couple of hits and a walk with a K. Kei Igawa, I know I can't believe he is still around either pitched 3 shutout innings with 2 hits, 1 walk and 3 k's. He has not given up a run all spring. He has pitched 12 innings giving up 6 hits, 2 walks and 11 strikeouts this spring. He won't make the team and is ticketed for AAA Scranton, he still is owed 12 million more and they can't trade him, so basically the Yankees are stuck with a AAA pitcher making lots of money but is of no use to them. Jon Albaladejo and Robertson each pitched a scoreless inning. Albaladejo had 2 strikeouts and Robertson had 1 k and 1 walk. Joba is back on track now for all of you who were worried and I have to admit it was a little alarming but that is why its spring training. The Yankees pitching all around looks good and it should be their strength this year, its going to be hard for Joe Girardi to pick who makes the final couple of spots in the bullpen as he has lots of good choices. I guess it is a good problem to have. The offense did lots of damage today with Nick Swisher leading the attack going 3-4 with 3rbi. Brett Gardner had a rbi triple, Cody Ransom was 2-2 with a walk. Hideki Matsui had a walk, Xavier Nady was 2-4 with a rbi. Angel Berroa was 1-3, Kevin Cash was 1-2 with a rbi and Jose Molina was 1-3 with a rbi. Austin Jackson had a hit and rbi. Shelly Duncan was 2-2 with a rbi trying to stay on the Yankees mind. Nick Swisher and Xavier Nady look to be getting their swings down and Brett Gardner continues to run away with the CF job. It is good to see Matsui getting in there pretty much everyday, Cody Ransom is trying to make us forget about Arod, lets hope he doesn't leave all the hits in Florida. The Yankees will be on YES tomorrow night with CC taking the hill. The Yankees got good news today regarding Marte and Cano as they have no structural damage. Cano expects to start in a game on friday. Damaso Marte will throw a bullpen tomorrow and need a couple of those before he gets into a game. Andy Pettitte will not be going to Fort Myers on Friday, instead he will throw to Jorge Posada in a minor league game. CC will not face the Rays on Sunday, he will get in his work somewhere else. MO will get into his first game tomorrow night, he should be following CC, probably the 5th inning or so.

Spring Game 20: Phillies at Yankees

Joba will try and keep it going today. Nick Swisher is playing 1b today and this is his biggest assett to the team, that he can play multiple positions, I think both he and Nady will get plenty of playing time. We will start seeing the regulars playing more as more and more guys head to minor league camp. The MRI's for Marte and Cano revealed no structural damage which is a sigh of relief. They will rest, and I am sure we will find out later for how long. Spring Game 20: Phillies at Yankees Posted using ShareThis

New York Mets Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Florida Marlins today. John Maine got the start and went 4 innings giving up 5 hits and 4 runs. He had 0 walks and 5k's. Casey Fossum pitched a perfect inning. Sean Green also pitched a perfect inning with a K. On the offensive side of the ball for the Mets, Luis Castillo was 1-3 with 2rbi, Jeremy Reed was 1-1 with a rbi and Ryan Church was 1-3 with a rbi. Nick Evans was 1-3 with 2 rbi as he continues his good spring. The Mets will be off tomorrow. Tim Redding was shut down yesterday ending his bid for the long relief job. GM Omar Minaya said today that Jon Niese could win the 5th starters job and Livan Herandez could adjust to a long relief role. Mike Pelfrey did come back yesterday and pitch 4 scoreless innings against Washington which was good news for the Mets. Tuesday the Mets ace Johan Santana will pitch in a minor league game and Jon Niese will pitch against the Braves in Orlando.

Yankees/Twins Recap and other Yankee Notes

The New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins this afternoon at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. This was a nice quick game with Andy Pettitte getting the start and Jorge Posada behind the plate. Pettitte pitched 3 innings giving up 0 runs, 2 hits and 1k. Phil Coke also pitched 3 innings giving up 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 2ks. Jose Veras, Anthony Claggett and Steven Jackson all pitched scoreless innings. The important thing was Jorge Posada did catch 4 innings, he didn't have a chance to try and throw a runner out but was throwing in between innings and Pettitte said he looked the same. He also had 2 more hits so he continues to be right on schedule to start the season. The offense had Damon and Swisher going 1-3. Big Tex was 0-2 but had a sac fly, Shelly Duncan went 1-1 and Melky Cabrera went 1-2. Angel Berroa continued his hot hitting going 1-2 with 2 rbi and Pena went 2-3 with a rbi. News and Notes: There were some guys cut today and reassigned to minor league camp and they are Jesus Montero, Mark Melancon, Christian Garcia, Kevin Russo, Ian Kennedy and Kyle Anson. The only suprise if you want to call it that is Mark Melancon who many thought might make it out of spring training including me, but I am sure he will be up with the Yankees at some point this season. Jesus Montero defintely showed off to the Yankees in the time he had in big league camp. Ian Kennedy is hoping to have a bounce back year but I am sure Phil Hughes is ahead of him so we may not see him at the big league level this year. Wang was working with pitching coach Dave Eiland on his arm slot in the bullpen today. Cashman had a lot of quotes today on some of the guys. This is what he had to say about Marte and Cano " There's a yellow flag, Hopefully it's just rest and recovery. Until we see the MRIS we just don't know, i hope there is no bad news. Ian Kennedy- " I just know that he went home and processed what took place last year. It was the first time in his career that he failed. He went to winter ball, made some adjustments and came out with the confidence. He came to camp in a great frame of mind and he heads to Scranton the same way. " Because he had so much success early, he didn't finish off some things he needed to work on and now he's back on track. I think he's going to have a big year, I really do. It will be a different Ian Kennedy for this franchise in 2009 then there was in 2008." Phil Hughes- " You're seeing that curveball and change more and more and to me that's a very good sign. He's becoming more complete." Mark Melancon- "He's somebody we're excited about. He's got ability, he works hard and he wants it. That's a good recipe right there." Jorge Posada-" It's good that we got to this day. Not this specific day, but we thought we wouldn't be ready to catch until Mid-March to catch in games and here we are. So we go from this point, that's an important first step of many more. These next few weeks, we'll really see it. " I guarantee and this is just me thinking, knowing how injuries are that in the back of his mind he doesn't trust it yet. Until he gets to the point where it's instinct and it just happens and he says, Wow, I didn't think about that. That's where he will work through the final phase of this thing. " I need Matsuis knees to be fine and I need Posada to be a catcher. That gives our lineup length and depth, with guys with plate discipline, guys with the ability to give professional at bats. Those guys know what they are doing. If these guys aren't available it changes the lineup radically, especially 6-9. I don't want to be in that position, honestly. " Jorge Posada is feisty, hungry and he wants to win. He doesn't get enough credit for the leadership he brings to that clubhouse. He is intense and sometimes that intensity can carry into some emotional outbursts that aren't always a bad thing. We missed him both on that field and in that clubhouse last year. Losing Wang and the way our pitching went last year was devastating. But our biggest loss was Jorge Posada."

Spring Game 19: Twins at Yankees

Peter Abraham has the lineups with some notes. There were some more cuts today as the Yankees get closer and closer to opening day. Today is a very important day for the Yankees as Jorge Posada will catch 3 innings and then we will see how he feels. If all goes well he will catch a couple of games next week and start catching more innings. He is leading off so he can get a couple of at bats. Matsui is also in the lineup for the second consecutive day and if all is well with him he will play tomorrow again making it 3 days in a row for the first time. The Yankees walking wounded seem to be progressing well and this is a great sign but they still got to be careful with them before they are out of the woods. The game is not on TV but listen to John and Suzyn on the radio WCBS 880 AM. It will be nice to see more of the starting lineup now, there will still be changes towards the end of the game but as we move along now there are less minor leaguers with the team and the starters have to start getting used to playing full games. Cano and of course Arod are still not in the lineup and Jeter, but once Jeter gets back the Yanks will resemble the lineup they will have on opening day. Andy gets the start followed by Phil Coke today, if Marte injury is serious Coke will become that late inning lefty and he has looked good so far.
