New York Yankees news and notes

Michael Pineda will make his spring training debut on Monday.  He will start the game with Nathan Eovaldi pitching after him out of the bullpen.  It isn't that unusual for starters to do that this early in the spring.

CC Sabathia will pitch in a simulated game on Sunday.  Joe Girardi did say that the Yankees are moving slower with him then they are with the other pitchers.  He also said the team has it mapped out so that Sabathia will see enough action to be ready for the start of the season.

Opening day starter hasn't been announced yet.  Girardi said the Yankees want to wait a little longer before making a decision.  My take on that is they want Tanaka to be the opening day starter but want to wait and make sure he is 100 percent healthy first.

The Yankees are giving Didi Gregorius at bats against lefty starters in spring training.  They want to see his numbers improve against lefties and know that won't happen if he doesn't see lefties.  He said he likes the idea and has made some minor mechanical adjustments that he thinks will help him.

Tanaka threw a two inning simulated game on Saturday morning.  He felt good and looked good according to the reports.  He is on schedule for the start of the season and to pitch in a game some time next week.

Dellin Betances will make his spring debut on Sunday.  Carlos Beltran felt fine after his spring debut on Friday night.  He said now it is just a matter of getting his timing.  He said that he is pain free and that is the good thing.

We will see for sure when the lineup comes out on Sunday morning but it looks like Arod could be playing third and if not he will on Monday.  The Yankees signed Mat Gamel to a minor league contract on Friday.  He is the older brother of Yankees farmhand Ben Gamel.  Mat was a pretty good hitter before knee injuries derailed him.  He is 29 and a first base, DH type player.  He hasn't played in two years but use to really hit in the minor leagues.
