Yankees at Mariners

The New York Yankees will try and win their 3rd straight in Seattle and 5th straight overall. Here are some quick notes and lineup from Peter Abraham of Lohud Yankees Blog. Derek Jeter has 2,670 hits as a SS. The major league record is 2,673 held by Hall Of Famer Luis Aparicio. Derek Jeter will soon be passing him. MO has converted 30 straight saves, 1 shy of his career record in 2005. The Yankees have allowed 6 earned runs and struck out 27 in their last 29 innings. Thats a 1.86 era. The Yankees are 3-2 in games Mitre started which is incredible. He has allowed 38 hits, 4 of which have been homeruns. He has also allowed 6 walks and committed 3 errors in 23 innings. Robinson Cano has a 12 game hit streak in which he is 22 of 53. The Yankees bullpen has allowed 1 run in their last 16 innings. The Yankees are 4-1 against Seattle this season and 28-18 at Safeco Field lifetime. Damaso Mate's 30 game rehab assignment ended yesterday but he has been excused from the team for personal reasons and is still on the 60 day DL. I don't know why but it looks like the Yankees just don't want him on the team. I would like another lefty but they are doing well without him. A-rod said he felt good enough to play and he is in the lineup. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Swisher(RF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Posada(DH) Cano(2B) Hairston(LF) Cabrera(CF) Molina(C)

Big Tex comes up Big

The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners last night 4-2. Andy Pettitte got the start and looked horrible early on giving up 2 runs in the first inning but with a runner on third and one out he got out of the inning with no further damage done. He went on to pitch 6 innings giving up only those 2 runs with 1 walk and 10 strikeouts. Brian Bruney pitched a scoreless seventh inning making it 5 scoreless appearances in a row for him. Brian Bruney pitching well is huge for this team because it will give the Yankees another reliable late inning arm. Phil Hughes pitched the 8th putting a couple of guys on base but not giving up any runs. The top of the ninth is when Big Tex stepped to the plate and blasted one to break the tie. Mariano Rivera dispatched of the Mariners on 9 pitches in the 9th and the Yankees won their 4th game in a row. There was no one in the Yankees lineup that had more then one hit, Mark Teixeira has recieved a lot of talk lately about MVP and this was a reason why. He really is having a great season all around, he has one error in the field and after having a terrible April he is hitting on all cylinders now. Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Jerry Hairston Jr., Melky Cabrera, Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada all had a hit. The story of this game and the Yankees success since the All star break is the pitching which just keeps putting up good numbers. The Yankes are 22-6 since the break and the starters just continue to put the Yankees in position to win and the bullpen doesn't give up much. The Yankees will try and win their third in a row with Sergio Mitre taking the mound against Luke French.

Yankee Notes

A-rod was in the original lineup but is out with Back Spasms, he said he hopes to play tomorrow. Joba will start after all in Seattle on Sunday but then not pitch again until they get back home after the roadtrip. Here is the pitching schedule now: Tomorrow-Sergio Mitre Sunday-Joba Monday- In Oakland-Burnett Tuesday-Sabathia Wednesday-Gaudin Thursday-OFF Friday- In Boston- Pettitte Saturday-Burnett Sunday-Sabathia Monday Aug 24th-OFF Tuesday Aug 25th-Joba Thanks to Peter Abraham for having this, check out his Lohud Yankees Blog

Yankees at Mariners

The New York Yankees take on the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field tonight at 10:10 on the YES network. Andy Pettitte is on the mound looking to keep it going. Here are the notes and lineup via Peter Abraham of the Lohud Yankees Blog. Seattle has scored only 3 runs in their last 32 innings. Andy Pettitte since the all star break has a 1.87 era and hitters are only hitting 210 against him. He is only 1-1 in 5 games though. Tonight will be Andy's 450th start. He is 224-133 for his career. He would become the 67th pitcher in history to win 225 games. Randy Johnson and Jaime Moyer are the only 2 active pitchers to have done it. Andy is 1-5 with a 4.26 era at Safeco Field so it isn't his favorite place. He is also 10-11 with a 4.58 against Seattle in his career so they aren't his favorite team either. The Indians are the only other AL team he has a losing record against. Johnny Damon is 17 of 43 in his last 10 games, 11 runs, 8 rbi's, 11 xbh and 5 strikeouts. Robinson Cano has hit safely in 11 straight games at 21 of 49. He is now hitting 318. Melky Cabrera is only 5 for his last 40 and Eric Hinske is 1 for his last 13. Brett Gardner needs to get well soon to give Melky a break. The team era of 4.29 is the lowest of the season. The Yankees are third in WHIP and second in K/9 in the AL. The Yankees have homered in 91 of their 115 games. Brian Bruney is starting to pitch better going 4 scoreless innings. He is from Oregon and has a lot of friends and family at this series. Joba will now start on Sunday and then not pitch again until they return home. I guess the Yankees got scared of having Mitre and Gaudin pitching on back to back days. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Swisher(RF) Cabrera(CF)

Yanks open up roadtrip with a bang

The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners 11-1 last night at Safeco Field. CC Sabathia got the start and was pretty dominant going 8 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits with 10 strikeouts. Brian Bruney finished it off with a perfect inning. This is CC time of the year and in his last 2 starts he has just been great. The offense was led by Hideki Matsui who went 4-5 with 2 homeruns. Derek Jeter had a couple of hits as did Johnny Damon, Big Tex, Robinson Cano and Jerry Hairston Jr. who has done nothing but hit since coming over in a trade. Joe Girardi said after the game that A-rod is a question for tonight but it really might not matter the way Hairston is playing. The Yankees will try and make it two in a row tonight with Andy Pettitte on the mound.

Yankees injury news

Derek Jeter is playing and looks fine as he hit a solo homerun to start the 3rd inning. A-rod is out today, he would of been anyway and we will see how he feels tomorrow. Jorge Posada is all banged up but I would expect him to be in there tomorrow and we don't know about MO. I hate to write this because it is painful to think about but Adrian Beltre the Mariners 3B is probably done for the season after he took a hard grounder off of his groin last night. He doesn't wear a cup and it tore his testical and he has internal bleeding and probably needs surgery to repair it, ouch let that be a lesson to always wear a cup if you are a player at any level. The Yankees by the way are out to a 5-0 lead, CC Sabathia looks sharp and after Jeters solo homerun in the 3rd Hideki Matsui hit a 2 run homerun. I don't think I will have a postgame but may be back later with a update and then in the morning with the recap.

New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners

The New York Yankees begin a 4 game set in Seattle tonight at 10:05 on the Yes network. This is also the start of a long 3 city 10 game roadtrip that concludes in Boston. Here are the notes and lineup from the Lohud Yankees Blog by Peter Abraham of the Journal News. The Yankees are 30-25 on the road this season, only the Angels are better at 32-22. Everyone else in the league is under 500. CC Sabathia is 4-1 with a 2.83 era in 7 career starts at Safeco Field. CC faced them at Yankee stadium this season and was bad giving up 10 hits and 6 runs in 5 2/3 innings. CC is 30-9 with a 3.21 era in 48 career starts in August. Johnny Damon has 9 xbh with 5 being homeruns in his last 9 games. Melky Cabrera is batting 139 in 9 games since hitting for the cycle in Chicago. Phil Coke has made 55 appearances this year, only 11 guys have more, 2 in the AL which are Craig Breslow and Matt Guerrier. Robinson Cano is really hot going 18 of his last 39 with 8 xbh and 4 rbi's. He has 8 multihit games in his last 9 games. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) Matsui(DH) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Hairston(3B) Molina(C)

Pitching matchups for Mariners/Yankees series

Tomororw- CC Sabathia @ Ian Snell Friday- Andy Pettitte @ Ryan Rowland-Smith Saturday- Sergio Mitre @ Lucas French Sunday- Chad Gaudin @ Doug Fister The Yankees should be able to win 3 games here with tomorrow being a mismatch, friday being a pretty good game and Saturday and Sunday who knows but the Yankees should be able to hit those pitchers and win with offense and who knows maybe Mitre and Gaudin will actually pitch pretty well.

Yanks cap another great homestand with walkoff win

The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 4-3 this afternoon in 11 innings. A.J. Burnett got the start and battled his way through 6 innings giving up 3 runs, he had 7 strikeouts with only 2 walks but Jorge Posada really had a tough time catching him today. He gave up a season high 10 hits. Dave Robertson and Phil Hughes each pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Robertson had a strikeout and Phil Hughes had a couple of strikeouts. Chad Gaudin making his Yankees debut got the win with 2 scoreless innings. He really looked good, he has pretty good stuff it is just a matter of him being consistand and having good location. He will get the start on Sunday with Sergio Mitre on Saturday. I know people have been asking why Mitre again and I feel the same way but with Joba being pushed back to Wednesday and it looking like this is what they have to do the rest of the year they need Mitre to be in the rotation and they figure there hitting can cover it up and win some of those games. I am sure also with a 6 game lead it is much easier to do this. I know a lot of people also don't believe in this innings cap but it is proven now in Baseball that you have to be very careful with young pitchers, the guys who pitched a lot of innings the last couple of years were Justin Verlander who had a couple off years after making the world series until this year, Mike Pelfrey who has struggled the Tampa pitchers etc, I think you get the idea. I do want to point out also though this is only the regular season the Yankees said it doesn't matter in the postseason so he will be pitching a game 3 or 4. The offense was led by Robinson Cano hitting a solo homerun and also having a walkoff single which would of been a double if it had to be. Derek Jeter got hit by a pitch in the first inning and had to leave the game, he wants to play tomorrow but I think he may have the day off. Jorge Posada got beat up also today but seems to be ok and the big news from after the game was that Mariano was creaky according to Joe Girardi, he said he isn't worried but of course with a older pitcher you have to be somewhat concerned. The manager said he expects him to be ok for tomorrow but we will have to see. A-rod got hit in the elbow in the 11th and was in obvious pain but stayed in and scored the winning run, he will be off tomorrow as was scheduled anyway but lets see after that, hopefully that will be all he needs. Johnny Damon had a couple of hits a walk and rbi. That was about it for the Yankees offense as they really didn't have a good game today. The Yankees will begin a 4 game series with Seattle tomorrow night.

Blue Jays at Yankees(The Rubber Game)

The New York Yankees end a 7 game homestand and also a 3 game series with the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon. They will embark on a 3 city 10 game, 11 day roadtrip starting tomorrow in Seattle. Here are some notes and the lineup via Peter Abraham who is already on his way to Seattle. A.J. is 1-1 with a 4.30 era in 2 starts against his former team this season. A.J. in his first 12 starts this season was 4-3 with a 4.89 era, in 10 starts since he is 6-2 with a 2.32 era. The Yankees are 8-3 against the Jays this season. Derek Jeter has hit safely in 7 straight and 19 of 21 overall. Jeter is 3rd in baseball in hits. Johnny Damon has 7 xbh in the last 8 games, Robinson Cano is 16 for his last 34 and Jorge Posada is 9 of his last 22 with 5 xbh and 5 rbi's. The Yankees bench has improved with Eric Hinske and Jerry Hairston Jr. The Yankees have hit 14 homers in their last 6 games. Dave Robertson has gone 3 2/3 innings without allowing a run while striking out six and allowing 3 hits. Alfredo Aceves has in his last 9 innings given up 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts. I can't believe this but the Yankees only have 3 homestands left, If you haven't been to the New STadium get out there and see it before it is too late. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Matsui(DH) A-rod(3B) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Swisher(1B) Hinske(RF) Cabrera(CF)

Some Yankee Notes

Good morning all, I forgot to put these notes last night. I guess I can start with Mariano Rivera who gave up his first run last night since June 12th, it had to happen eventually but he still converted his 29th straight save. Brett Gardner had his cast removed and hopes to be back in a cou ple of weeks, they miss his speed that is for sure. He adds a different element to the team. It appears that Chad Gaudin will start in Joba Chamberlains spot on Sunday, if this does happen then part of the plan would be to skip Joba when they can. Sergio Mitre will start on Saturday, this is interesting though because then two days in a row you have questionable pitching but it is in Seattle and they probably figure they can outhit them. A.J. Burnett is still giving, he is taking the original WWE belt they have and having everyone on the team sign it. He then is going to auction it off and all the proceeds will be going to Camp Sundown. If you don't remember those are the kids with the rare condition where they can't be in light and they came to the game and then had the carnival until 3AM on the last homestand. What a great job by A.J. not only has he pitched well and stayed on the field he has shown to be a good person and teammate also.

Yankees take game with late heroics

The New York Yankees won a tough game tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5. Joba Chamberlain got the start and went 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Brian Bruney pitched a scorless seventh with a strikeout and Phil Coke got 2 outs in the 8th and then David Robertson got the last out before Mariano Rivera converted his 29th straight save. Joba wasn't great but he wasn't terrible either he just has to get more consistant and that is part of learning to be a pitcher, he is still 23 years old and everyone has to remember that. The offense started off with a bang and then looked flat for a few innings before striking in the 8th to score 3 runs, Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada hit back to back solo homeruns and then Johnny Damon added a rbi single and so did Melky Cabrera. Damon had 2 other hits and Derek Jeter went 3 for 5 also. Mark Teixeira had a hit, walk and rbi, A-rod had a walk and Jorge Posada also had another hit and rbi other then the homerun. Robinson Cano had 2 hits and Eric Hinske and Melky Cabrera had 1 and Melky had 2 rbi's. The Yankees will try and take the series tomorrow in a matinee game with A.J. Burnett taking on Ricky Romero before they head out to Seattle for 4 games.

Blue Jays at Yankees

The New York Yankees will take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2nd of 3 from Yankees stadium. The game is at 7:05 on MY9 in NY. The Yankees are 4-1 on their current seven game homestand. Joba is the starter tonight and was shaky his last time out against the Red Sox but he pitched 3 great games in a row before that and is 8-0 with a 1.79 era in his career after the all star break. Melky Cabrera turns 25 today, Happy Birthday to him. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Hinske(RF) Cabrera(CF)

Yanks 7 game winning streak ends

The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays tonight by the score of 5-4. Sergio Mitre started and I would think this was his last chance, he gave up 5 runs in 5 innings. He is the 5th starter and if that is your biggest problem then your in really good shape. The bottom line though is he hasn't pitched one good game, he always goes 5 innings or less and you just can't have that. Alfredo Aceves was great though on the bright side saving the bullpen by pitching 4 shutout innings. You do have to wonder if they were trying to stretch him out, it will be interesting to see if Joe Girardi says anything about Mitre's next start in postgame or if he will say the usual he pitched ok and he is in our rotation. Chad Gaudin is here but hasn't pitched yet so maybe he will move into Mitres spot also. The offense was ok but not great, Jerry Hairston Jr., Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano all had solo homeruns. Nick Swisher had a sac fly but struck out to end the game with a runner on first. The 9th inning showed where they really miss Brett Gardner because after Hideki Matsui singled, Ramiro Pena came in to run for him, if that was Gardner he would of stolen and it could of changed the whole inning but Pena was just there in case they hit one in the gap he could get further then Matsui but never thought of stealing. The Yankees will send Joba Chamberlain to the mound tomorrow and try and start a new winning streak. I know a lot of people will say see this was a let down but it wasn't that at all, they played a good game but Mitre was pitching and that sets the tone and they didn't quite score enough but they weren't dead at all.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

The New York Yankees begin a 3 game series with the Blue Jays at Yankee stadium tonight at 7:00PM on the YES network. Here are a few notes from the Lohud Yankees Blog and the lineup. The pitching staff has a 2.50 era during the 7 game winning streak allowing 56 runs and 20 hits over 69 innings. They have thrown 62 percent of their pitches for strikes and held opponents to a 224 batting average. The Yankees are 7-2 against Toronto this season. MO has not allowed a run since June 12th a stretch of 21 1/3 innings. His era now stands at 1.88. He has allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in his last 5 1/3 innings though. A-rod hit his 574th homerun last night putting him at 9th all time, Mark McGwire is up next at 583 homeruns. The Yankees at 27 games over 500 are at their highest point since the end of the 2006 season when they finished 97-65. Cody Ransom cleared waivers and accepted a assignment to Scranton, this is nice he is a good guy that had a horrible tragedy in college. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Swisher(RF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Posada(DH) Cano(2B) Hairston(LF) Cabrera(CF) Molina(C)

Pitching matchups for Jays/Yankees

Tonight- Sergio Mitre vs Marc Rzepczynski Tomorrow- Joba Chamberlain vs Scott Richmond Wednesday- A.J. Burnett vs Ricky Romero The good thing is the Yankees aren't going to face Roy Halladay. Tonight is a rematch from last week in Toronto, this may be Mitre's last chance to stay in the rotation. They do have Chad Gaudin to back him up so I am sure he will have a fairly short leash. Joba Chamberlain will try to get back on track tomorrow and A.J. will try and keep it going wednesday afternoon against a good young pitcher in Ricky Romero. I would expect the Yankees to win 2 out of 3 but this could be a letdown series after 4 long agonizing games against their archrivals.

Yanks sweep sox

The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox tonight sweeping the 4 game series and putting themselves 6 1/2 ahead of the Sox. The Red Sox are now tied with Texas for the wild card lead and only 2 games ahead of Tampa Bay. Andy Pettitte started and was great going 7 shutout innings. The top 3 yankees starters went 7 2/3, 7 1/3 and 7 in the last 3 games without giving up a run. Phil Coke came on in the 8th and got Ellsbury but then he stayed in which I don't get at all since Phil Hughes only pitched to 1 hitter the last 2 days. Phil Coke gave up a 2 run homerun to Victor Martinez. The Yankees hitters didn't do much other then a A-rod homerun in the 7th but then after Josh Bard got 2 easy outs Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira went back to back for the 6th time this year to set a team record. They weren't done as A-rod walked, Posada doubled and Nick Swisher singled them both in. Mariano Rivera came on in the 9th for the save. The Yankees are in great shape but you don't want to let down now, Toronto comes in for 3 and it would be natural to let down but hopefully they wont. Sergio Mitre pitches tomorrow night against Mark Rzepczynski. The Yankees have now won 7 in a row and have won 13 of their last 14 at home. I have to say also that there is something about this team, they are looking like a special group. They were down 2-1 in the 8th with 2 outs and no one on when they went back to back and then scored 2 more runs and basically end the game with Mo coming in.

Yanks go for 4 game sweep over Bosox

The New York Yankees will try and get the 4 game sweep over their rivals the Boston Red Sox tonight at 8 on ESPN. The Yankees DFA'D Josh Towers and activated Chad Gaudin. Alfredo Aceves has a sore back and they are not sure if he will be able to pitch tonight. Here are the pregame notes and lineups from the Lohud Yankees Blog by Peter Abraham. The Yankees have won 30 of their last 40 games. They have a 5.5 game lead which is the largest lead since they finished the 2006 season 10 games ahead. Boston has lost 5 straight and 13 of their last 20. Andy Pettitte is 1-1 with a 2.36 era since the all star break. He is 16-9 with a 3.76 era in 31 career starts against Boston. The Yankees are 17-3 in their last 20 home games. Yankee starters have gone 20 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs on 9 hits while striking out 20 and walking 15. Yankee relievers have allowed 5 hits and struck out 10 in 8 2/3 scoreless innings in this series. The Red Sox have not scored in 24 innings. They have 2 runs in the last 28, 6 in the last 33 and 12 in the last 55. Boston is batting 144 with 35 strikeouts in the last 3 games. They are also 3 for 33 with runners in scoring position. Mo has not allowed a run in 20 1/3 innings. The Yankees have homered in 86 of 110 games and 51 of 55 at home. Phil Hughes as a reliever has allowed 5 earned runs in 31 innings and struck out 40. Robbie Cano is batting 360 without runners in scoring position and 205 with runners in scoring position. Cano is 11 of his last 22, maybe he will start hitting in the clutch now. The Yankees at this same p0int last season were 60-50 and 5 1/2 games out. Melky is 3 for 21 since hitting for the cycle. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(DH) Posada(C) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Hairston(3B) Boston Lineup: Ellsbury(CF) Pedroia(2B) Martinez(1B) Youkilis(3B) Bay(LF) Drew(RF) Lowell(DH) Varitek(C) Green(SS)

Cape Cod Baseball

The Yankees play a 8:00PM ESPN Sunday night baseball game tonight so there wont be any game posts for a while. I forgot to post this the other day but there was a good post on the Lohud Yankees Blog about some of the Yankees draft picks that have been playing in the Cape Cod League this summer. The Cape Cod League for those who don't know is the oldest and best amateur league out there. I have been to a few games up there and it is worth going too. This is really baseball at its most pure and best, you don't pay admission but they do send around a hat in the crowd for donations and you can donate whatever you would like. My Parents own a home in Cape Cod and that is how I have been to a few games, each team in the different towns have their own uniqueness and you get to talk to the players and get autographs. IF you look at all the major leaguers that have played there it is amazing and you are probably seeing at least a couple future major leaguers so check out the post and also check out www.capecodbaseball.org
