The Mets continue to free fall as they lose to the Washington Nationals in extras

The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals by the score of 8-2 on Monday night. The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. The final score isn’t even the story, it was tied until the tenth inning. The Mets gave up six runs in the tenth, which is the most they ever gave up in extra innings. The Mets turned a 2-2 tie into an 8-2 deficit. Chris Young started and pitched pretty well, the bullpen did not. Ruben Tejada led the Mets offense. Jordan Zimmerman started for the Nationals and pitched well and the bullpen also pitched well. Bryce Harper led the Nationals offense. 
Young started for the Mets and seven innings giving up three hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out seven. Josh Edgin pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one, Jon Rauch faced one batter and retired him and Bobby Parnell pitched an inning giving up a hit. Tim Byrdak took his second loss of the season. He didn’t record an out and gave up a hit and two runs with one of them being earned. Pedro Beato pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up four hits and four runs with a walk and Elvin Ramirez pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one. Zimmerman pitched six innings giving up four hits and a run. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out six. Drew Storen faced one batter and retired him, Mike Gonzalez pitched one inning giving up two hits and a run with three strikeouts and Ryan Mattheus pitched one inning giving up a hit. Tom Gorzellany won his third game of the season. He pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

Tejada had three hits, David Wright had a hit and an RBI and Ike Davis had a hit and an RBI. Daniel Murphy had two hits, Andres Torres drew a walk and Josh Thole had a hit. Murphy had a double, Wright and Davis each hit a homerun. The Mets were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and they left four men on base. Tejada committed an error.

Steve Lombardozzi had two hits, Harper had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk and Ryan Zimmerman had a hit and three RBI. Michael Morse had a hit and two RBI, Adam LaRoche had a hit and drew a walk and Gorzellany drew a walk. Danny Espinosa had a hit, Roger Bernadina had a hit and Sandy Leon drew a walk. Zimmerman had a double, Harper and Morse each hit a homerun. The Nationals were 4-7 with runners in scoring position and they left five men on base. Harper had a stolen base, Leon had a passed ball.

Harper hit a two run homerun in the first to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead. In the fourth Wright hit a solo homerun to make it 2-1 Nationals. In the seventh Davis hit a solo homerun to tie the game at two. The Nationals scored six runs in the tenth to break the tie and win the game 8-2. Harper had an RBI single, Zimmerman had a three run double and Morse hit a two run homerun.

The Mets continued their skid and their record is now 47-49. The Nationals record improved to 56-39. The two teams will play game two of a three game series on Tuesday night.
