The New York Yankees take a series from the Tampa Bay Rays

The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by the score of 6-4 on Sunday afternoon. The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and pitched pretty well, the numbers look worse then they were. He had one bad inning and really one bad bounce. The Yankees bullpen was good. The offense was led by Russell Martin. Matt Moore started for the Rays and didn’t pitch very well, their bullpen did. Evan Longoria led the Rays offense. 
Kuroda pitched six innings giving up four hits and four runs with two walks and ten strikeouts. He won his 14th game of the season. Boone Logan faced one batter and retired him, David Phelps pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout and Dave Robertson pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. Rafael Soriano picked up his 40th save of the season pitching a perfect inning with a strikeout. Moore lost his 11th game of the season pitching three innings giving up three hits and five runs with four walks and four strikeouts. Brandon Gomes pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and an unearned run with a walk and a strikeout, Cesar Ramos pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk and he struck out one and Wade Davis pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings striking out four batters. J.P. Howell pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Burke Badenhop pitched 2/3 of an inning retiring both batters that he faced.

Derek Jeter had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Nick Swisher drew a walk and Alex Rodriguez had a hit and two RBI. Robinson Cano had a hit and drew a walk, Martin had a hit and three RBI and Curtis Granderson had a hit and drew a walk. Steve Pearce drew a walk and Eduardo Nunez drew a walk. Cano hit a double and Martin hit a homerun. The Yankees were 3-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Nunez had three stolen bases and Rodriguez had one. Rodriguez committed an error.

Desmond Jennings had a hit, Ben Zobrist had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Longoria had a hit and two RBI. Ben Francisco had a hit, Lobaton drew a walk and Carlos Pena drew a walk. Zobrist and Francisco each hit a double. Zobrist hit a homerun. The Rays were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base. Moore and Gomes each committed an error.

In the third inning the Yankees scored five runs to take a 5-0 lead. Jeter hit an RBI single, Rodriguez had an RBI single and Martin hit a three run homerun. In the fourth Zobrist hit a solo homerun to make it 5-1. The Yankees took a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Rodriguez sacrifice fly. In the sixth Longoria hit a two run single and Joyce grounded into a double play to score a run and make it 6-4. The final score was 6-4.

The Yankees took two out of three in the series and they will be off on Monday. The Yankees remain in first place by a game over the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees record improved to 83-63 and the Rays record fell to 78-68. The Rays are five games behind the Yankees and with 16 games left that pretty much finishes them. The Yankees will start a three game series at home against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night and Andy Pettitte will return.
