The New York Mets avoid the sweep with a victory over the Cleveland Indians.


The New York Mets defeated the Cleveland Indians on Sunday afternoon. The final score was 2-1 and the game took place at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched well for the Mets and their bullpen held the lead. Eric Young Jr. Daniel Murphy and Justin Turner each had two hits. Matsuzaka pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up three hits and a run with three walks and six strikeouts. Vic Black pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a walk and striking out one, Pedro Feliciano pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and striking out one and Frank Francisco earned his first win of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk. LaTroy Hawkins pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one to earn his eighth save of the season.

Young Jr. had two hits and an RBI, Murphy had two hits and drew three walks and Josh Satin had a hit. Lucas Duda drew two walks, Turner had two hits and an RBI and Matthew den Dekker had a hit. Daniel Murphy and Eric Young each hit a double, Turner hit a homerun and the Mets were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base. Turner was caught stealing.

Danny Salazar pitched four innings giving up four hits and a run with two walks and eight strikeouts. Nick Hagadone pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk and striking out one, Matt Albers pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up a hit and striking out one and Cody Allen pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk. Rich Hill faced one batter and walked him, Joe Smith pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one and Chris Perez lost his third game of the season pitching an inning and giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout.

Nick Swisher had a hit and drew a walk, Jeff Kipnis had a hit and drew a walk and Carlos Santana had a hit and drew a walk. Jason Kubel had a hit, Asdrubal Cabrera had an RBI and Jason Giambi had a hit and drew a walk. The Indians were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Aviles was caught stealing and Kubel had an outfield assist.

In the fourth Turner hit a solo homerun giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. In the sixth Cabrera was hit by a pitch scoring a run to tie the game at one. In the ninth Young Jr. hit an RBI double to give the Mets a 2-1 lead and that would be the final score.

The Mets record improved to 64-77 and the Indians record dropped to 76-66. The Mets will host the Washington Nationals for a three game series beginning on Monday night.
