New York Mets drop both games of a doubleheader



The New York Mets were defeated by the Pittsburgh Pirates in two games on Tuesday afternoon and night.  The games took place at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the final score in both games was 3-1.  Steven Matz and Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and they both pitched well.  The offense only came up with nine hits combined in both games. 

Matz pitched five innings giving up eight hits and two runs with two walks and eight strikeouts and he took his second loss of the season.  Bastardo pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a walk and a strikeout and Logan Verrett pitched two innings giving up a hit and he walked one with two strikeouts. 

deGrom started the other game for the Mets and pitched six innings giving up six hits and three runs with no walks and nine strikeouts and he took his second loss of the season.  Jim Henderson pitched an inning giving up a hit and he walked one, Jerry Blevins pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a strikeout and Hansel Robles pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits. 

Curtis Granderson had a hit and an RBI, Yoenis Cespedes drew a walk and Neil Walker had a hit.  Wilmer Flores had a hit, James Loney had a hit and drew a walk and Michael Conforto drew a walk.  Matz had a hit which was a triple and Granderson hit a homerun and the Mets were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and they left seven men on base. 

Josh Harrison had three hits, Andrew McCutchen had two hits and an RBI and David Freese had two hits and an RBI.  Jung Ho Kang had two hits and drew a walk, Francisco Cervelli drew a walk and Jordy Mercer had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Niese drew a walk and Freese hit a double, Harrison a triple and Mercer hit a homerun.  The Pirates were 2-14 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.  Harrison had a stolen base. 

Niese won his sixth game of the season for the Pirates pitching seven innings giving up four hits and no runs with two walks and two strikeouts.  Neftali Feliz pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a walk and Mark Melancon pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

In the first Freese hit an RBI single to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.  McCutchen hit an RBI single in the fifth to make it 2-0 Pirates and in the sixth Mercer hit a solo homerun pushing the lead to 3-0.  In the eighth Granderson hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 3-1 and that would be the final score. 

In the other game Granderson drew a walk, Walker had a hit and Michael Conforto had a hit.  Flores drew a walk, Kevin Plawecki had a hit and an RBI and Alejandro De Aza had a hit.  Conforto and De Aza each hit a double.  The Mets were 1-3 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.  Walker committed an error. 

John Jaso had two hits and an RBI, Gregory Polanco had a hit and Jordy Mercer had two hits.  Sean Rodriguez had two hits, Cole Figueroa had an RBI and Chris Stewart had two hits and an RBI.  Nicasio had a hit, Kang drew a walk and Rodriguez and Jaso each hit a double.  The Pirates were 3-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. 

In the second Figueroa hit an RBI groundout giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.  Stewart hit an RBI single pushing the lead to 2-0.  In the fifth Plawecki hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.  Jaso hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-1 and that would be the final score. 

The Mets were swept in the doubleheader and will play game three of three on Wednesday night.
