New York Mets defeat the Baltimore Orioles in final spring tune up


The New York Mets defeated the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.  The game took place at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida and the final score was 9-7.  Zack Wheeler started for the Mets and he didn’t pitch very well.  Robinson Cano had three hits and Jeff McNeil and Amed Rosario each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Wheeler pitched three innings giving up five hits and five runs with two walks and two strikeouts.  Luis Avilan pitched to one batter and struck him out, Jeurys Familia pitched to two batters and got them both out with a strikeout and Robert Gsellman pitched two innings giving up two hits and he struck out one.  Seth Lugo pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout, Edwin Diaz pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with three strikeouts and Matt Blackham pitched an inning with a walk. 

Brandon Nimmo had a hit, Peter Alonso drew a walk and David Thompson had a hit and an RBI.  Cano had three hits, Michael Conforto had an RBI and Wilson Ramos had a hit and an RBI.  Tomas Nido had a hit, McNeil had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and J.D. Davis had a hit and an RBI.  Rosario had two hits and an RBI.  Dominic Smith had a hit and three RBI, Juan Lagares had a hit and Ramos, Cano and Rosario each hit a double.  Thompson, Davis and Smith each hit a homerun.  The Mets were 3-12 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. 

In the first Dwight Smith hit a solo homerun, Rio Ruiz hit an RBI double and Chris Davis hit a two-run homerun to give the Orioles a 4-0 lead.  In the second Rosario hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-1.  In the third Conforto hit an RBI ground out and Ramos hit a sac fly to cut the lead to 4-3.  In the third Smith hit a solo homerun pushing the Orioles lead to 5-3.  In the fifth McNeil hit a solo homerun and it was a 5-4 game.  In the seventh Davis hit a solo homerun tying the game at five.  In the bottom of the seventh Zach Vincej hit a sac fly to give the Orioles a 6-5 lead.  In the eighth Thompson hit a solo homerun tying the game at six.  In the bottom of the eighth Hanser Alberto hit an RBI single to give the Orioles a 7-6 lead.  In the ninth Smith hit a three-run homerun to give the Mets a 9-7 lead and that would be the final score. 

The Mets finished their spring with a 13-16 record and will head to Washington to take on the Nationals Opening Day on Thursday afternoon.
