Yankees Thursday night notes from the West Coast
Here are the Yankees postgame notes from Thursday night in Oakland. It was a late game and the notes are courtesy of the Lohud Yankees Blog with my own thoughts mixed in.
Have the Yankees played a more forgettable game this season? If you didn’t stay up late to watch this one, you really didn’t miss out on much. Freddy Garcia wasn’t good, but he wasn’t exactly horrible. The Yankees couldn’t do much against A.J. Griffin, but their three-runs streak continued. They made it a one-run game in the ninth, but couldn’t finish the rally. It was a pretty ho hum type of game.
“It’s difficult because if I can’t hit my spot, I’m not throwing 95,” Garcia said. “I need to find my spot. Base hit, infield hit, whatever. I think those kinds of games, everything’s going wrong. But you know, I was able to keep pitching and pitching. … I was in trouble the whole game, but I was able to keep the game close.” The A's dont exactly have a great offense, Garcia wasn't very good but he did keep them in the game. Phelps out of the pen was much better and I am sure it will lead to speculation but for now Garcia will remain in the rotation.
It was that kind of game. Trouble the whole game. Keeping it close. Scoring a few runs. Giving up a few more. This day was all about Brett Gardner being lost for the season — Joe Girardi said he didn’t find out about the surgery until right after batting practice, just a few minutes before the Yankees announced it — and it really felt like the kind of game that we’ll all forget within a few weeks.
“Freddy kept us in the game,” Girardi said. “We just didn’t get him enough runs.”
Griffin’s first five big league starts have all been quality starts. “He’s got that equalizer with that 65-mph breaking ball,” Nick Swisher said. “The next time we face him, I think we’ll know a little more about him. He started throwing that breaking ball a lot. … He’s throwing his fastball at 90-91, you’re talking about a 21, 22-mph difference. But you’ve got to give him credit. He did a good job. He didn’t walk any guys. He really mixed his pitches in and out, changing speeds. He did a good job.” The Yankees don't usually do well against guys they have never seen, and this game was no different.
It’s always kind of amazing that big league hitters have trouble with pitches thrown slower than normal hitting speed. “You can see it when it comes out (of his hand),” Raul Ibanez said. “But there’s a big difference in the speed.”
Garcia is 7-8 with a 5.27 ERA in 23 career starts against the A’s.
In relief of Garcia, David Phelps look tremendous. He pitched 2.1 perfect innings with four strikeouts (three on fastballs, one on a curveball). “When I was down there (in the minors) I was really concentrating on throwing pitches that haven’t thrown in different counts,” Phelps said. “I was throwing changeups and curveballs behind in the count, working my way back into the count that way, and I had a lot of success doing that.” Phelps has pitched well for the Yankees this season, maybe he will be here for good now.
Girardi on Phelps: “I thought he looked pretty similar (to earlier in the season). His stuff was really sharp. His fastball and curveball were really good tonight. He threw a few sliders. When we sent him down, we wanted to build him up because he wasn’t’ getting a lot of work. He’s built up, and I think he can really help us.”
Girardi was told about Gardner’s upcoming surgery soon after batting practice. “They made it sound like we probably won’t have him the rest of this year,” Girardi said. “Let’s get it cleaned up and get him healthy.” The thing about him is he has only played nine games so the Yankees have gotten used to being without him.
Robinson Cano’s hitting streak reached a career-high 22 games. It’s the longest active streak in the Majors and the lonest by a Yankee since Derek Jeter had a 25-game streak from August 20 to September 16, 2006.
Jeter tied Eddie Collins for 15th on baseball’s all-time runs scored list. He scored the 1,822nd run of his career.
Swisher is hitting .321 with 13 walks in his past 10 games. His home run in the ninth kept alive the Yankees streak of 43 consecutive games scoring at least three runs.
Let’s give the last word to Swisher, on Gardner’s injury: “I just talked to him on the phone. It’s a big deal. Gardy was kind of that little spark plug, you know? That guy’s got the ability to lead the league in stolen bases. You lose out on a guy like that, but you know, we’ve been hit with the injury bug pretty hard this year. For us, we’ve just got to pull it all together. Keep doing what we’re doing, keep fighting and just throw our thoughts and prayers out there that it’ll be OK. From what I’ve heard, no one even knows what happened.”
Yankees Monday Night notes from Tampa Bay
Here are the postgame notes from Chad Jennings at the Lohud Yankees blog and Journal News. The Yankees let one get away that they could have had. It was their eighth straight loss at Tropicana Field and a very frustrating one. The positive is that Freddy Garcia pitched very well.
Dave Robertson has built his reputation on getting out of late-inning trouble, and Mark Teixeira is widely considered one of the best defensive first basemen in baseball. The Yankees faced plenty of uncertainty tonight — who knew what to expect from Freddy Garcia or against Matt Moore? — but the Yankees have come to depend on Robertson and Teixeira. In a decisive seventh inning, it was those reliable pieces that let them down.
“It was a 3-1 count, I had to make a good pitch,” Robertson said. “I never faced him before but still, I shouldn’t have fallen behind on him. I gotta get one out. I got a runner on second. I blew it there. I blew the game. It didn’t really matter after that. I felt like, in that situation, I should have been able to come in and get the out.”
Place the blame on Teixeira? Robertson wouldn’t hear of it.
“I feel like I flat-out blew the game today,” Robertson said. “I feel like that one’s not on Tex. He’s made amazing plays behind us all year long and he’s done it for three years that he’s been here. It’s gonna happen. I still should have been able to get Conrad out. That one falls on me today.”
“It’s one of those that, after it goes by, you go, ‘What just happened?’” Teixeira said. “I didn’t even get leather on it. Usually, you can knock it down or something when it takes a weird bounce. I tried to look at video, but I couldn’t tell what happened. … Usually you can say, ‘I charged it when I should have laid back’ or ‘I laid back when I should have charged it.’ I just missed it. I don’t know what happened. The ball obviously didn’t do what I expected it to do.”
Place the blame on Robertson? Teixeira wouldn’t hear of it.
“We should still be playing,” he said. “That’s the tough thing. We battled all night, and we should still be playing right now if I make that play.”
This was easily Garcia’s best start of the season, and it looked a lot like those steady-but-not-overwhelming starts the Yankees saw so often last season. “It’s been so long in the bullpen,” he said. “I came here today and I pitched five innings and one-third. I threw pretty good. I made a couple of mistakes and paid for them. Besides that, I always tried to throw strikes and make a good pitch.”
Garcia’s pitch limit was 75, and he threw 74. His last was the Carlos Pena home run that tied the game in the sixth, but Garcia said fatigue wasn’t an issue. “They asked me,” Garcia said. “I was feeling fine. They asked me in the sixth inning, go hitter by hitter. That’s what they did, but I threw the pitch to Pena. I know he was looking for it all night because I threw like 10 backdoor sliders.”
Clay Rapada was loose when Pena came to the plate, but Girardi liked the way Garcia was throwing the ball and wanted to let him try to get Pena. “If the first guy gets on, I was going to go to Rapada,” Girardi said. “But (Garcia)’s done a tremendous job in his career, and the last two years on Pena. When you look at what Freddy’s done to him, he’s still throwing the ball good, I said you know what, I’m going to leave him in.”
Coming into tonight, Pena was a career .103 hitter with no extra-base hits, no RBI and 11 strikeouts in 39 at-bats against Garcia. He was 0-for-2 with a strikeout in his first two bats against Garcia tonight.
Girardi on Teixeira: “You expect him to come up with every ball. That’s how good he is. Tonight, it wasn’t meant to be.”
Girardi on Robertson: “You figure he’s going to get that big strikeout when he needs it. That’s what he’s been so good at for us for the last couple years. He just didn’t do it tonight.”
In the past few days, Robertson has blown a couple of situations like this. He said it has nothing to do with being rusty after the month-long DL stint. “I’m completely back,” he said. “I felt great. I felt like I was throwing the ball real hard. I just fell behind on a good hitter, and he made me pay for it. He made us pay for it.”
Garcia has made five career starts against the Rays. This was the first time that his team lost one of those starts.
Moore allowed two runs in the first inning, but the Yankees didn’t score again until the seventh. They hit into three double plays in the first six innings. “Mixing in his pitches,” Teixeira said. “The guy throws 95-96 from the left side. When he needed to get the big out, he did. He kept the ball down in the zone, his breaking ball was really good late in the game and his changeup was good all game.”
Robinson Cano has an RBI in six straight games, tied for the longest streak of his career. … Derek Jeter was hitless in his past 19 at-bats against the Rays before his leadoff double. … Coming into tonight’s game, Teixiera had 663 chances without an error this season.
Here’s a gross image: Raul Ibanez has eight stitches in his lip after that weird injury on Sunday when he broke a tooth and cut his lip while dodging a foul ball from inside the Yankees dugout. “I just moved out of the way of a foul ball,” he said. “When I moved out of the way, it hit that steal part of the bench. I should have taken the ball.” Ibanez was tested for a concussion and will eventually have one of his top teeth fixed because it chipped significantly. The freakish part is that his doctor found — thankfully — three pieces of the chipped tooth imbedded in Ibanez’s lip! “I just have to suck out of a straw,” he said. “It’s my own fault for moving out of the way of the ball. I should have just caught it.”

Two outs, one-run lead, runner at second
The Yankees turned to their setup man a third of an inning earlier than
usual. The Rays called on Brooks Conrad to pinch hit, and Robertson immediately
fell behind in the count before letting Conrad line a game-tying double off the
wall in right field. Two outs, one-run lead, runner at second

Mark Teixeira
Two outs, game tied, runner at second
After giving up the game-tying double, Robertson faced No. 9 hitter Elliott
Johnson, the Rays light-hitting utility infielder. He hit a sharp bouncing ball
right along the first-base line. Teixeira got there in time and seemed to have a
play. Then, suddenly, he didn’t have a play. Two outs, game tied, runner at second
Yankees weekend notes
Joe Girardi didn't see anything good out of Freddy Garcia on Saturday but he didn't want to make any rash decisions. He went home and had a good nights sleep. He decided on Sunday that Garcia would be moved to the bullpen and that David Phelps would be moved to the rotation. I don't think this was too hard of a decision and one the Yankees had to make. D.J. Mitchell was also called up from AAA on Sunday and will be in the bullpen as the long man. Garcia will see mop up duty I would say and that is about it. I would guess that when Petitte comes back he could be released but we will see. Here are some other notes from the weekend.
A lot of these are courtesy of the Lohud Yankees blog by Chad Jennings. I also have my own insights as always.
Although Garca said he physically feels fine, Girardi said it’s entirely possible that the Yankees will send him for medical tests. Garcia’s fastball velocity has dipped, and his split — an effective put-away pitch last season — has been cutting. It was an 0-2 split that Andy Dirks hit for a three-run home run in the first inning.
“I don’t see the crispness in his pitches,” Girardi said. “If we didn’t see it in spring training I’d say, well, maybe it’s not going to be there. But it was there. He threw great in spring training. He threw harder than he did last year. For whatever reason it’s not there right now.”
Garcia seemed baffled, frustrated and uncertain following the loss. He said he’d like to make his next start, but acknowledged that he’s not sure the Yankees will send him back out there.
“I’m just struggling, man,” he said. “For me, it’s really hard. I like to compete and I’m not competing right now. It’s frustrating. … My velocity is down. We work hard last week on a couple of things and things are not going in the right way right now. I don’t know what’s going to happen next.”
For the first time, Girardi called David Phelps a candidate to move into the rotation. “Any time you have a long man, he’s a candidate to be a starter,” Girardi said. “Your long man is someone who is a sixth starter all the time in the bullpen.”
After three hitless innings today, Phelps ERA is down to 3.57. After two rocky outings, today looked much more like what the Yankees saw out of Phelps in the first two weeks of the season. “My last two outings I was just trying to do a little bit too much instead of staying within myself,” he said. “I kind of got back to that today.”
The bullpen allowed one run through 7.1 innings. Cody Eppley gave up a solo homer to Miguel Cabrera, but that was the extent of the damage. Despite Garcia’s awful start, the Yankees had a chance because of the pen. “It just speaks volumes to the quality of arms we have in our bullpen, the job that we’ve done all year,” Phelps said. “You saw tonight, we were 10 or 15 feet away from having a tie ballgame. It’s what we’re supposed to do, go in and give our team a chance to win. We’ve been doing a great job of it so far.”
Those 10 or 15 feet came on Eric Chavez’s fly ball to end the game. A three-run ninth got Chavez to the plate as the tying run with two outs in the ninth. He gave the ball quite a ride, but it was caught short of the wall.
Nick Swisher homered from both sides of the plate for the 11th time in his career, tying Eddie Murray and Chili Davis for the second-most such games all time behind Mark Teixeira. This was the first time Swisher had homered at home this season. He has six home runs.
Curtis Granderson hit his seventh homer of the season. It was his first home run off a left-hander this season.
Garcia has allowed nine first-inning runs this season.
This is the first time in Garcia’s career that he’s gone back-to-back starts without pitching out of the second inning. Last time it happened to a Yankees starter was Chien-Ming Wang in 2009. That’s not exactly the comparision he wants right now.
It’s worth noting that D.J. Mitchell last started on Tuesday, making Sunday his regular day to pitch. He was called up on Sunday but he will be in the bullpen along with Freddy Garcia for now. I couldn't imagine a situation other then a blow out where Garcia would pitch.
Speaking of minor league starters: The Yankees confirmed that Andy Pettitte’s next start will be with High-A Tampa, not Double-A Trenton. They don’t want him pitching in the cold.
It’s easy to look at CC Sabathia’s past three starts and believe that he’s been the exception to the rule. The rest of the rotation might have struggled, but surely not the Yankees ace. Not the guy who just beat the Rangers and Tigers in back-to-back starts and has pitched into the eighth inning three times in a row.
But slow starts are nothing new to Sabathia, and his first few outings this year weren’t particularly ace-like. What makes Sabathia an exception to the rule is that there’s never any doubt he’ll get it turned around and get on this kind of roll.
“I think we’ve seen him do it time and time again,” manager Joe Girardi said. “When we signed him, in spring training, we talked about that this is a guy who has notoriously got off to slow starts, let’s not evaluate him the first month of the season. And if I remember, that start was a little bit slow. You talk about a guy that you signed for a long time and expect good things, but that’s kind of his history. So that gives me confidence that he does get off to a slow start that things are going to turn around, because I’ve seen it time and time again.”
Sabathia’s ERA has dropped with each start. He was better than the numbers showed in Texas, but today was a legitimately dominant performance. Prince Fielder took him deep, and Miguel Cabrera hit an RBI double, but Sabahtia allowed only two other hits and struck out eight.
“You always feel confident that you can go out and hold a team down,” Sabathia said. “I felt pretty good today. Moved the ball around and made some pitches. … (Fastball command) has been getting better in the bullpens and in the games. I’ve been able to command it. I think that really makes my offspeed stuff that much better. When I can do that, I feel pretty good.”
On a day the Yankees took a proactive step to try to improve the back of their rotation, the best thing they could do to sort out the top of the rotation was to leave Sabathia exactly where he is.
“He’s a guy that we’ve come to rely on, going out there and battling and keeping us in games,” Derek Jeter said. “He’s a guy that doesn’t want to come out, and especially when we’ve been using out bullpen a lot lately, he was exactly what we needed.”
Girardi confirmed after today’s game that David Phelps will take Garcia’s spot in the rotation on Thursday in Kansas City. That’s about four hours from Phelps’ family home in St. Louis. “They were coming out regardless,” Phelps said. “But they were going to come Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Now I’m sure they’ll come on Thursday. It’s nice for the family too, to know exactly which day I’m going to pitch.”
Although Girardi says it’s not a personal catcher situation, Chris Stewart has caught Sabathia’s past three starts, and Sabathia said he hasn’t shook once in the past two starts. “It feels good,” Sabathia said. “To believe in what he’s calling, he’s been calling great games, catching great games. I’m just excited about being able to work with him for however long it works out.”
Stewart has at least one hit in each of those past three starts, and today’s single led to a run on a close play at the plate in the seventh inning. “We talk about it with all our catchers, your first job is defense,” Girardi said. “You talk about saving runs. I know that doesn’t go on the back of a bubblegum card, but it’s really really important, and he does a tremendous job doing it. I tell our catchers, offense is second. Save runs for me. And they understand that.”
Dave Robertson picked up right where Sabathia left off today, striking out two in a dominant ninth inning. Through 10 innings this season, Robertson has allowed seven hits and struck out 15. He’s the last Yankees pitcher — except D.J. Mitchell, I guess — who has yet to be charged with a run.
Alex Rodriguez drove in two runs today and moved ahead of Willie Mays for sole possession of eighth place on baseball’s all-time RBIs list. He has 1,904. I don't think a lot of people realize where he is numbers wise. It isn't just homeruns, he is up there in hits as well. When his career is all said and done he will be in the top five most likely in hits and RBI and he will probably have over 3000 hits.
Just a little bit behind Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson picked up his 500th career RBI today.
Granderson said he had to watch a replay to realize how close Austin Jackson came to catching Granderson’s fourth-inning home run to center field. “I didn’t see what happened right away,” Granderson said. “When I heard the crowd make the noise that they did, I knew something good happened, I just didn’t know on which side. Then the umpire told me it went over the fence.”
Jeter snapped an 0-for-9 with a 2-for-3. He now has 36 hits, his most ever for the season’s first month. He leads the team with 12 multi-hit games this season.
Andruw Jones was hitless in his past 19 at-bats but went 2-for-2 with a home run after replacing Nick Swisher, who left with a hamstring injury.
The Yankees drew a season-high nine walks and scored their first run on a bases-loaded walk. Tigers starter Max Scherzer had seven of those walks. “We’re not supposed to do that,” Jim Leyland said. “Major League pitchers are not supposed to do that, walk that many.”
The Triple-A rotation has lost D.J. Mitchell, but it’s getting Manny Banuelos back from the disabled list on Wednesday.

The New York Yankees rally comes up short in ninth as they fall to the Detroit Tigers
The New York Yankees lost to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday evening by the score of 7-5. The Yankees were down early in this game 6-1 but fought back. Freddy Garcia started for the Yankees and had nothing, he continues to struggle and may be out of a job soon. The Yankees bullpen did a good job, only giving up one run through 7 1/3 innings pitched. Nick Swisher hit a couple of homeruns.
Garcia pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up six runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Clay Rapada pitched a perfect 1 1/3 innings, David Phelps pitched three innings giving up a walk and he struck out two and Cody Eppley pitched three innings giving up two hits and a run with a walk and three strikeouts. Drew Smyly picked up his first win of the season as he pitched really well. Smyly pitched six innings giving up two hits and a run with two walks and he struck out seven. Phil Coke gave up a hit and a run in one inning and Octavio Dotel pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts. Jose Valverde struggled to finish the game but he did finish it. He pitched an inning giving up three hits and three runs with a walk.
Derek Jeter drew a walk, Swisher had two hits and two RBI and Alex Rodriguez had a hit and drew a walk. Curtis Granderson had two hits and two RBI, Andruw Jones drew a walk and Raul Ibanez had a hit and an RBI. Ibanez had a double, Swisher had two homeruns and Granderson had a homerun. The Yankees were 2-3 with runners in scoring position and they left three men on base.
Austin Jackson had a hit and drew a walk. He has had a fantastic series so far against his former team. He at least was in their minor league system. Brandon Boesch had a hit, RBI and drew a walk, Miguel Cabrera had two hits and three RBI and Prince Fielder drew two walks. Andy Dirks had a hit and three RBI along with a couple of very nice catches in the outfield. Alex Avila had a hit and Jhonny Peralta had a hit. Boesch had a double, Dirks and Cabrera each had a homerun. The Tigers were 3-5 with runners in scoring position and they left two men on base. Jackson had a stolen base.
In the first inning Dirks hit a three run homerun to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Swisher hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. In the second Boesch hit an RBI double and Cabrera hit a two run single and it was 6-1 Tigers. The score remained that way until the seventh when Granderson hit a solo homerun to make it 6-2. The Tigers came right back with a run in the eighth on a Cabrera solo homerun. The Yankees rallied in the ninth with a solo homerun from Swisher and a RBI single by Granderson and RBI double by Ibanez. Eric Chavez hit a long fly ball to right field for the final out that he just got under. If he hit a line drive it would have been a tying two run homerun.
The two teams have split the first two games with the Yankees winning on Friday night and the Tigers winning this game. I think the Yankees will be reevaluating their starting rotation after this game. Phelps has continued to look good also and I think it is logical to switch those two. I am not sure that the Yankees will do it though so we will have to wait and see what happens.

New York Yankees pitching woes continue in loss to the Minnesota Twins
The New York Yankees lost to the Minnesota Twins by the score of 7-3 on Monday night. Freddy Garcia got the start and wasn’t very good. Carl Pavano got the start for the Twins and got off to a very rough start. He settled in though and was able to get the win. Derek Jeter continued his hot hitting, Curtis Granderson, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira each had two hit’s a piece. Joe Mauer had three hits and Justin Mourneau had two hits for the Twins.
Garcia pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up nine hits and five runs with no walks and five strikeouts. He suffered the loss and is 0-1 on the season. Boone Logan pitched 2/3 of an inning and walked two, Cory Wade pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up four hits and two runs with a strikeout and Clay Rapada pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. Brian Duensing pitched an inning giving up a hit and Matt Capps pitched an inning giving up a hit.
Jeter had two hits and an RBI, Granderson had two hits and an RBI and Rodriguez had two hits. Robinson Cano drew a walk, Teixeira had two hits and an RBI and Raul Ibanez had a hit. Jeter and Granderson each had a homerun. They were hit back-to-back in the first inning to start the game. The Yankees were off to a flying start but then completely got shutdown. Mauer had two doubles, Valencia and Casilla each had one. Morneau had a homerun in the game. The Twins were 5-11 with runners in scoring position and they left eight men on base. Mauer had a stolen base and Carroll was caught stealing.
The game had a wild first inning with five combined runs and then slowed down. Willingham had an RBI single in the first to give the Twins a 1-0 lead. Doumit had an RBI single to make it 2-0 Twins. The Yankees tied it in the bottom of the first on back-to-back homeruns by Jeter and Granderson. The Yankees took a 3-2 lead when Teixeira hit an RBI single. In the fifth inning Carroll hit an RBI single to tie the game at three and then Mauer hit an RBI double to make it 4-3 Twins. Morneau hit a solo homerun in the sixth to give the Twins a 5-3 lead. In the eighth Valencia hit an RBI double and Thomas an RBI single. The final score was 7-3.
The two teams will play three more games in this series. They will play Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. The Yankees record fell to 5-5 and the Twins improved their record to 3-7 on the season. The Yankees after opening the season 0-3 have won five out of seven games. They always have their way with the Twins and would like to win the next three to win the series and have a very good opening homestand.

The New York Yankees win a marathon 12 inning game 5-4 in Baltimore
The New York Yankees won their second straight game on Tuesday night. They defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 in 12 innings in Baltimore. Freddy Garcia started and had nothing right from the start. He was very wild which is unusual for him. It looked like he was uncomfortable with the weather and just couldn’t get a grip on the ball. Garcia had five wild pitches in the game which is more then he had in the last couple of seasons combined. It was the most wild pitches in a game since 1989. A.J. Burnett didn’t even accomplish that feat, as wild as he was with the Yankees. The Yankees bullpen was great and Raul Ibanez became the hero with the game winning RBI.
Garcia pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up four hits and four runs with three of them being earned. He walked three and struck out three. David Phelps pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings with four strikeouts, Dave Robertson pitched a scoreless inning with a walk and a strikeout and Boone Logan gave up a hit to the only guy he faced. Cory Wade pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up one hit and a walk with four strikeouts, Clay Rapada got the win pitching 2/3 of an inning and striking out one and Mariano Rivera earned his first save of the season. Rivera pitched a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. I thought Chen the Baltimore pitcher pitched really well. He pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and four runs with two of them being earned. He walked one and struck out six. The Orioles used five other pitchers, they pitched well and Strop took the loss pitching two innings and giving up two hits and one run with two walks and two strikeouts.
Derek Jeter had two hits and an RBI, Nick Swisher had a hit and Robinson Cano had three hits. Mark Teixeira had a hit, Curtis Granderson drew two walks and Andruw Jones had an RBI. Ibanez had two hits and an RBI, Russell Martin had a hit and drew a walk and Brett Gardner had two hits and an RBI. Swisher, Cano and Ibanez each hit a double. Jeter hit a homerun, the Yankees were 2-18 with runners in scoring position and they left 12 men on base. Ibanez had a stolen base and Martin committed an error with a passed ball.
The Orioles had six hits but not one Oriole had more then one hit. Adam Jones and Robert Andino each had a double. J.J. Hardy hit a homerun, the Orioles were 0-8 with runners in scoring position and they left eight men on base. Jones had a stolen base and Reynolds was caught stealing and committed an error. Chavez had an outfield assist.
Jeter hit a leadoff homerun to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. The Orioles came right back and scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Hardy hit a solo homerun and a wild pitch scored another run. The Orioles scored another run in the fourth inning on a Nick Johnson ground out which was a fielders choice. In the bottom of the fifth Garcia threw another wild pitch for a run and it was 4-1 Orioles. The Yankees broke through in the sixth inning. Jones hit a sacrifice fly, Martin reached on a fielding error and it was 4-3 Orioles. Gardner hit an RBI single to tie the game at four. The Yankees scored their fifth and final run of the game in the 12th inning. Ibanez hit an RBI double which was the game winning hit.
The two teams will play game three of a three game series on Wednesday night. The Yankees will be looking for their third straight win and a sweep of the three game series. CC Sabathia will start for the Yankees and Jake Arrietta will start for the Orioles.

Yankees Saturday notes
Here are the Yankees notes from Saturday after their win over the Detroit Tigers. The notes are coming from Chad Jennings at the Journal News. I as always offer my thoughts as well.
Freddy Garcia could have made things easy for the Yankees this afternoon. Instead, he might have made things harder. Showing absolutely no rust in his first start back from a swollen right hand, Garcia pitched 4.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and two walks. The only hit he allowed was a comebacker — of course — that glanced off his leg. I believe he will be the odd man out, I think the Yankees want the young guys in the rotation but there is a chance that they put Phil Hughes in the bullpen especially now with what happened to Joba Chamberlain.
“Freddy was great today,” Joe Girardi said, not even waiting for a reporter to ask him a question. “I mean, everything; slow curveball he used to get ahead in the count sometimes, located his fastball, his split was good, his backdoor slider was good. He had it all. We got him to 64 pitches, so I was very pleased.”
“Last year, I signed a minor-league deal and came to spring training to earn a spot,” Garcia said. “Everything was harder for me because I had to come here and pitch really good and show them I can pitch in this league. (This winter) I signed early, but they signed guys and (Girardi) said he liked competition, and we’re in competition. I like that. It’s making my thinking straight. I concentrate better on what you’re doing.”
After last week’s hand injury — on a comebacker in Dunedin — Garcia might have fallen to the back of the pack, but he looked today as if he hadn’t missed a step. Whether you believe him or not, Girardi has said the Yankees will take their five best starting pitchers, and right now Garcia has been more consistent than anyone but Phil Hughes.
“I have to worry about myself and go out there and pitch,” Garcia said. “The way I pitched today, you know, I needed it.” He is right but he may have needed it even more then the other guys.
Raul Ibanez’s two-run home run in the seventh inning not only gave the Yankees the lead, it also snapped him out of a hitless streak dating back to March 10. “It felt good to be able to make a left turn instead of a right turn,” Ibanez said. It is only spring training but he has been really bad. He has a couple of weeks now to get it going the other way.
Ibanez credited extra work with Kevin Long. The two spent an extended session in the cage yesterday, and Ibanez said it paid off. “I felt like I was in a better position to hit,” he said. “And in a better position to take a good swing.”
Because the Yankees are facing a left-handed starter tomorrow, Ibanez will go to the minor league complex to get at-bats. It’s not uncommon for big league hitters to leadoff every inning in minor league spring training games. They can often get more at-bats by hitting in multiple games. “I told him, as many (at-bats) as he wants,” Girardi said.
Garcia was fine after being hit by a Jhonny Peralta comebacker in the third inning. He quickly dismissed the training staff and stayed in the game, but it was kind of freaky to see a pitcher hit in his first game back from a comebacker. “It happened to me twice,” Garcia said. “But it’s nothing to worry about.”
Francisco Cervelli was taken out of the game after being hit by a pitch in the seventh inning. “He’s fine, too,” Girardi said. “He just got hit in the calf. Well, the shin. He’ll be fine.” Cervelli always seems to be getting injured during spring training.
Dewayne Wise continued his strong spring training with a game-winning, two-run double in the 10th inning. The Yankees went into extras after the Tigers tied the game with two-runs in the ninth. Both runs came off D.J. Mitchell, who was pitching his third inning of work and seemed to lose the strike zone a little bit.
Another strong showing for Cesar Cabral who had one strikeout in a hitless bottom of the 10th. The Rule 5 pick has 12 strikeouts and only one walk this spring. If the Yankees want to carry a second lefty out of the pen they seem to have a couple of good choices. Clay Rapada has also been very good this spring.
Justin Maxwell picked up his fourth stolen base of the spring as part of a double steal in the 10th inning. Maxwell stole third. … Jose Gil’s batting average is down to .563 after a 1-for-2 day. … Mark Teixeira and Colin Curtis also had hits today. … Boone Logan retired the two batters he faced, and Kevin Whelan retired the three batters he faced.
Although Joba Chamberlain is being released from the hospital tomorrow, Girardi said he’s not sure when Chamberlain will stop by Yankees camp. Girardi expects Chamberlain to be in camp again at some point, but it might not happen right away. “He’s not capable of driving, so we might see him next week some time,” Girardi said. “It just depends what he wants to do.” I think it may be good for him to get back around the guys as soon as he can.

Yankees Thursday notes
Here are a bunch of Yankees notes from Thursday. They beat the Washington Nationals 8-5 in Viera and will play them again tomorrow afternoon at home. Chad Jennings of the Journal News and Lohud Yankees blog has all the coverage.
Both Joe Girardi and Freddy Garcia said pretty much the same thing today: It’s just too early to know anything for certain. Garcia had his right hand heavily wrapped this morning, but he’s still not sure how much time he’ll have to miss after being hit by a comebacker on Wednesday. I didn't think he would win the fifth starters job anyway so this may end up working out well with him going to the pen.
“Right now I don’t think about it,” Garcia said, “because I went to the hospital yesterday, they took x-rays and everything is fine. So, I just have to wait. I move my fingers good, so I don’t think I have to have any problems.”
Girardi said he’s expecting at least one more day of treatment. The injury seems to be close to the same spot where Eduardo Nunez has experienced soreness for a week and a half now.
“I don’t expect miracles,” Girardi said. “When you’ve got swelling in your hand, it’s going to take time to get rid of it. I’m not going to scratch him, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he didn’t make his next start on his day. Maybe a couple of days later or something.”
The entire Yankees rotation is supposed to get an extra day of rest next time through.
Two more notes about Michael Pineda’s fastball: 1) Girardi said he hasn’t seen any signs of Pineda trying to overthrow just to reach 95, and 2) Pineda said he’s much more focused on hitting his spots than hitting the mid-90s. I don't think it is as big of a deal as it is being made out to be. I agree with Girardi Pineda hasn't tried to dial it up just yet.
Russell Martin on Pineda’s fastball: “I think he was like 88-90 in Clearwater, so it’s coming along. I’m not worried about it. I just want to see the guy pitch. He’s a pitcher like anybody else out there. I just wanted to see him execute pitches. His velocity, he has it in him, it’s just a matter of time. As soon as you put on your uniform, you’re in New York and you get the juices flowing, the velocity is going to pick up no matter what.”
And if you’re looking for more fastball specifics: “(Pineda) was a little inconsistent trying to throw his fastball away to right-handers. It looked like he was pulling off a little bit.” Martin said it’s an easy thing to correct and could be fixed in a single bullpen.
Ramiro Pena was trying to steal second base, and just as he went into his slide, his spike stuck in the dirt. That’s when he sprained his right ankle, not when he actually made contact with the bag. He estimated that he’ll miss only two or three days, but Girardi said that might be optimistic. “We’ll see about that,” Girardi said. “I imagine it’s going to be pretty sore tomorrow. Sometimes adrenaline helps you out in a situation like that.”
Nick Swisher told Girardi that his tight groin didn’t get any worse last night, and he was fine when he came to the stadium this morning. Girardi hopes to have Swisher in the lineup tomorrow.
Other injury updates:
Dave Robertson was scheduled to play catch today and on track to throw a bullpen this weekend.
Russell Branyan still hasn’t played this spring and is getting an epidural for his sore back.
George Kontos threw another batting practice.
Manny Delcarmen is throwing off a half mound.
Martin was knocked down on the play that left Wang injured. “It happened in slow motion,” Martin said. “It was weird. I tucked pretty good. If I had fell differently, it could have been worse. I kind of just rolled with it. It’s the ninja coming out right there.”
Apparently the Yankees saved all of their excitement for after the media was down in the clubhouse. They won the game 8-5, having rallied with four runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth. Jose Gil is hitting .750 this spring and had a two-run single. Melky Mesa and Bill Hall both doubled in the game. Hall and Justin Maxwell each had two hits, continuing a nice spring for Maxwell (he’s hitting .375 with two stolen bases). Maxwell, Jayson Nix and Andruw Jones each stole a bag today.
Clay Rapada pitched into and out of some trouble, but finished with 1.1 scoreless innings. Mike O’Connor and Adam Warren combined for a scoreless ninth. In between, Brett Marshall allowed two runs in 2.1 innings and Juan Cedeno was charged with a run in his two-thirds of an inning

The Yankees lose to Toronto 7-5 as Garcia leaves after being hit on the hand
The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon. The game was in Dunedin, Florida. Freddy Garcia started and pitched ok, it was his worst start but he was pitching so good that wasn’t hard to do. Manny Banuelos, the top pitching prospect had his worst game by far. Curtis Granderson had a couple of hits.
Garcia pitched three innings giving up four hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out three. Garcia left his start early due to being hit on the hand. He did go for X-rays and they came back negative. Cory Wade pitched one inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts, Banuelos pitched an inning giving up three hits and four runs with two walks and a strikeout and D.J. Mitchell pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts. Mitchell continues to impress as he looks for a final spot in the bullpen or at least to be the first guy called up if a need arises in the rotation.
The Yankees for the first time this spring played most of their regular lineup. Derek Jeter had a hit, Doug Bernier had a hit and two RBI and Granderson had two hits and an RBI. DeWayne Wise had two hits and two RBI, Robinson Cano had a walk and Corban Joseph had a hit. Mark Teixeira had a hit, Cole Garner had a hit and Eric Chavez had a hit. Jayson Nix and Francisco Cervelli each had a hit.
Granderson had two doubles, Cervelli, Bernier and Garner each had a double. The Yankees were 2-11 with runners in scoring position and they left eight men on base. Wise had a stolen base in the game.
The Yankees record on the spring now drops to 5-8. They will play at the Nationals in Viera on Thursday afternoon.

Yankees postgame notes after a blowout victory over Boston
Even before Freddy Garcia walked out to the mound and stepped on the rubber, the Yankees had already wrapped up a spot the postseason. But Garcia hadn’t secured a spot in the postseason rotation. He might have done that this afternoon. We will see which way the Yankees go but he looks like a good bet to get the ball in Game three of the divisional series.
“What he did today is what he’s been doing most of the year for us,” Joe Girardi said. “… Freddy’s a guy that’s been there and done all that. As we move forward we’ll continue to look at all those things, but today he pitched great.”
Garcia struggled in his first two games this month, and a couple of bad pitches really hurt him last weekend in Toronto, but today was the way Garcia has pitched for most of the year. He gave up five hits, but all were singles. He struck out only three, but also walked just one. He gave the Yankees six innings, and he beat the Red Sox, and none of the other third-start candidates has been especially impressive lately.
“I needed to pitch good today because my last three starts I was a little bit struggling,” Garcia said. “I did it. I’m really happy about it, and now I’m looking forward to my next start. I don’t know when, but hopefully I’ll be in the playoffs.”
Girardi said he likes that Garcia mixes his pitches. He likes that Garcia gives a different look than the other Yankees starters. And he likes that Garcia’s been to the playoffs before. Garcia has a 3.11 ERA in 55 postseason innings. I would think right now he will get the ball in Game Three but I also think if A.J. Burnett pitches well they could go with him since he has done it before with the Yankees and they seem to have a unflinching loyalty to him.
“I’ve been there before and I’ve been successful,” Garcia said. “Hopefully they give me the ball and I’ll be there to pitch. That’s what I do… I always like to prove people wrong. I like that. I like a challenge. If they give me a chance to start the game, I’ll be there.”
Jesus Montero’s first big league at-bat came with the bases loaded against Jon Lester, and he struck out. Montero’s first at-bat this afternoon was in the same situation, and Montero singled in the first run of the game. It was the start of a 3-for-4 day that included four RBI and Montero’s fourth home run of the season.
Girardi: “I actually thought he had a pretty good at-bat that day (in his debut). I thought he fouled off some pitches and just missed some pitches. He had the one swing that he swung at over his head, his first pitch. I can completely understand that. First day in the big leagues. At Fenway. Bases loaded. Against Jon Lester. I wouldn’t have thought anything if he swung at three balls over his head, I just wouldn’t have. As that day went on, I thought his at-bats were pretty good. We have seen consistent at-bats against left-handers, there’s no doubt about it.”
Montero: “I was remembering the first time, he was on the mound in Boston. I was like, wow, this is a movie again, or something like that? I have him again with three men on base? You get kind of nervous, I get a little nervous in that moment, but I got the base-hit, thank God.” Montero has shown an ability to adjust to pitchers, he seems to have a very high hitting IQ and doesn't get rattled by situations.
This was the first time the Yankees had beaten the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium this season. They are 5-11 against Boston this season. This season it didn't mean all that much as the Yankees will finish with the best record in the league and homefield advantage throughout the AL playoffs.
After scoring eight runs in the first three innings, the Yankees had just one hit — Montero’s home run — from the fourth inning to the end of the game. That isn't good but when you score so many early sometimes you just run out of gas or eventually you are going to be stopped from scoring.
Today was Garcia’s first scoreless start since July 20. It was his fourth scoreless start of the season, and he’s allowed four earned runs or less in 22 of his 25 starts. He’s 6-2 with a 3.20 ERA in day games.
Girardi said he’s not sure what Garcia will do next, but he could throw a sim game to keep himself on his routine and sharp for a playoff appearance.
Girardi still has no next step for Phil Hughes, but Girardi is confident that Hughes came through today’s bullpen just fine. Girardi said it’s “possible” Hughes will start one of the games in Tampa. Earlier, it seemed like Hughes would definitely get one of those starts. Could be that the Yankees want him to work out of the bullpen if that’s going to be his postseason role, but Girardi didn’t commit one way or the other.
Derek Jeter has a hit in 18 of his past 20 games. He homered on a fastball and has now driven in a run in five of his past nine games against Boston. He’s hitting .332 since coming off the disabled list, and he’s hitting .400 against lefties since coming off the DL.
Montero is the first Yankees rookie to have four RBI in a game against Boston since Brett Gardner drove in four runs on September 26, 2008 at Fenway.
According to ESPN Stats and Info: Montero is the fifth Yankee with four or more home runs in his first 15 Major League games. The rest of the list: Shelley Duncan, Oscar Azocar, Kevin Maas and Steve Whitaker.
Montero on driving the ball to right field: “All the time my approach is to right field, trying to hit the ball to right field all the time. Sometimes it’s not going to happen, but I’m thinking that way because that’s the way I learned to hit in the Yankees (organization). That’s the way they pitch me. Every time I go to bat, that’s the way I think.”
Maybe Russell Martin shouldn’t hate the Red Sox so much. He has 10 RBI in 11 games against Boston this season, his highest RBI total against any team in 2011. His three home runs against Boston are also his most against any team.
The Yankees announced an attendance of 49,556, the highest for any regular-season game at the current Yankee Stadium. Today’s number broke the previous record by exactly one person.

Yankees pound the Red Sox to hurt their wildcard chances
The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 9-1 on Saturday evening. Freddy Garcia made the start for the Yankees and pitched great, he may have secured himself a spot in the postseason rotation. The Yankees bullpen did a good job and the offense really hammered Jon Lester. Jesus Montero had a big day at the plate.
Garcia pitched six innings giving up six hits and no runs. He walked one and struck out three. Garcia improved to 12-8 on the season. Raul Valdes pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and one run, Cory Wade gave up a hit without recording an out and Boon Logan faced two batters and retired both of them, one on a strikeout. Luis Ayala faced two batters and retired them both and George Kontos pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Derek Jeter had a hit and three RBI, Robinson Cano had a hit and Nick Swisher had a hit and two walks. Andruw Jones had two hits, Montero had three hits and four RBI and Russell Martin had a hit and two RBI. Montero had a double, Jeter and Montero each had a homerun. The Yankees were 5-6 with runners in scoring position and they left two men on base. Rodriguez made a throwing error.
In the second Montero had an RBI single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Martin had a two run single to make it 3-0 and Jeter had a three run homerun to make it 6-0 Yankees. In the third Montero had a two run double and it was 8-0 Yankees. Montero hit a solo homerun in the sixth to push the lead to 9-0, the Red Sox would get their only run of the game in the seventh inning. It was the last run of the game as the game finished 9-1. Carl Crawford had an RBI double.
The Yankees with their win had a magic number of one to clinch home field advantage throughout the AL playoffs. The Tigers were taking on the Orioles this evening and lost so the Yankees have clinched home field advantage. The Yankees also with the victory put the pressure on the Red Sox who came into the day with a 2 ½ game lead over the Rays for the wild card. The Rays won so the lead is down to 1 ½. The Red Sox will be pitching John Lackey and Tim Wakefield in the doubleheader tomorrow. These are two pitchers that have really struggled for an extended period of time. There was a crowd of 49, 556 which was the largest in the new stadiums history. Garcia said “I needed to pitch good today. I did it, I’m really happy about it, and now I’m looking forward to my next start. I don’t know when, but hopefully it will be in the playoffs.” The Yankees had their regular lineup in there against the Red Sox. I would assume in one of the games tomorrow they will and then in the other it will be a lot of backups since it is a doubleheader. The key though is pitching and that is why the Red Sox are struggling so much, the pitching for them has been awful. A.J. Burnett will star the first game for the Yankees on Sunday and Ivan Nova will pitch the night cap of the doubleheader. The Yankees will really try to hurt the Red Sox chances by beating them in both games of the doubleheader.
