The New York Yankees sweep a doubleheader from the Toronto Blue Jays
The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays twice on Tuesday. They beat them 8-4 in the afternoon and 3-2 at night with both games taking place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes pitched for the Yankees with Nova having one bad inning. Hughes pitched really well in the night game. Robinson Cano had a good day and Nix and Romine led the offense at night.
Nova pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up nine hits and four runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Nova earned his sixth win of the season. Boone Logan retired the only batter that he faced, Shawn Kelley walked two batters and retired one and David Robertson pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts. Joba Chamberlain pitched 1/3 of an inning walking a batter and Mariano Rivera pitched 2/3 of an inning.
Hughes pitched six innings giving up two runs and seven hits. He walked two and struck out six. Preston Claiborne pitched two innings giving up a hit and striking out one and Rivera pitched an inning giving up two hits and striking out one and picking up his fourth win of the season.
Robinson Cano had six hits and five RBI on the day, Brett Gardner had a hit and an RBI and Vernon Wells had a hit and drew a walk. Alfonso Soriano and Mark Reynolds each drew a walk and Alex Rodriguez had a hit and drew a walk. Curtis Granderson had a hit, Lyle Overbay drew a walk and Jayson Nix had three hits, two RBI and drew two walks. Chris Stewart had a hit and three RBI and Austin Romine had three hits. Nix, Cano and Stewart each hit a homerun. Wells, Romine, Suzuki and Cano each hit a double. Nix had a stolen base and Stewart had a passed ball. Suzuki had a stolen base and Romine had a passed ball.
The Yankees record improved to 66-59 and the Blue Jays record fell to 57-69. The two teams will play game three of four on Wednesday night.

The New York Yankee split a doubleheader with the Cleveland Indians
The New York Yankees lost game one of a doubleheader to the Cleveland Indians by the score of 1-0. They won game two by the score of 7-0, it was a traditional doubleheader where they played the second game right after the first one. David Phelps started the first game and pitched well and in the second game Vidal Nuno really pitched well in his first major league start. The Yankees bullpen was also good with Adam Warren giving four shutout innings in the second game and Preston Claiborne and Boone Logan pitching well in the first game. The Yankees were without David Robertson and Mariano Rivera in these games so it was huge for the other guys to step up. The offense in the first game didn’t do anything but in game two they stepped up.
David Phelps pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up four hits and a run with five walks and seven strikeouts in game one. Logan pitched to one batter and struck him out and Claiborne pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. In game two Nuno pitched five shutout innings giving up three hits and three walks and struck out three. Warren pitched four shutout innings giving up two hits and striking out four.
Justin Masterson picked up his sixth win in game one pitching a complete game shutout. He gave up four hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. In game two Trevor Bauer lost his second game of the season pitching 6 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits and three runs with two of them being earned. He walked two and struck out four. Nick Hagadone pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and four runs with three of them being earned. He walked one and struck out one. Matt Albers pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and striking out one and David Huff pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and striking out two.

The New York Yankees salvage the final game of the series in Detroit
The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers by the score of 7-0 on Sunday afternoon. The game took place at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan. CC Sabathia started for the Yankees and pitched great and David Robertson and Mariano Rivera closed the game out. Jayson Nix, Kevin Youkilis and Francisco Cervelli led the offense.
Sabathia pitched seven innings giving up four hits and no runs. He walked three and struck out four and earned his first win of the season. Robertson pitched an inning giving up two hits and striking out two and Rivera pitched an inning giving up two hits and striking out one.
Brett Gardner had a hit, Robinson Cano had a hit and Youkilis had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk. Travis Hafner had two hits, Vernon Wells had a hit and drew two walks and Ichiro Suzuki had a hit and an RBI. Cervelli had two hits and two RBI and Nix had three hits and two RBI. Youkilis, Cervelli and Wells each hit a double. Nix hit a homerun and the Yankees were 3-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.

Austin Jackson drew two walks, Torii Hunter had two hits and Prince Fielder had a hit. Matt Tuiasosopo had two hits and drew a walk, Brayon Pena had a hit and Omar Infante had a hit. Santiago had a hit and the Tigers were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.
In the second inning Cervelli hit an RBI double and Nix hit a two run homerun. The Yankees had a 3-0 lead until the eighth inning. Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly and Cervelli an RBI single to make it 5-0 Yankees. In the ninth inning Youkilis hit a two run single to make it 7-0 and that was the final score.
The Yankees ended their two game losing streak and improved their record to 2-4. The Tigers are now 3-3. The Yankees will head to Cleveland and take on the Indians in a four game series beginning on Monday afternoon. The Yankees will face the Indians at 4:05PM on Monday. The Tigers will have the day off on Monday.

Yankees Wednesday evening Postgame notes from Seattle
Here are the Yankees postgame notes after they took a series in Seattle. They are compliments of the Lohud Yankees blog.
How much do you make of one at-bat? Is a three-run, game-winning double by Jayson Nix enough to believe a career .210 hitter can help fill the Alex Rodriguez void? Is a come-from-behind win in Seattle enough make you believe Eric Chavez just might stay healthy enough, and Nix just might be productive enough, and the Yankees just might win enough to weather these next few weeks?
“This is a great team with a lot of really good players,” Nix said. “I think what makes it so great is that nobody tries to do too much, everybody just tries to do their job, and that’s all I try to do.”
Nix was on the bench again today. A right-hander on the mound meant Chavez was at third base, but during the seventh inning, Nix went to the indoor batting cage to stretch and hit. He’d pinch hit just twice this season, but Nix is also used to this role. He said he realized there were a bunch of lefties coming up, so he wanted to get himself ready just in case.
“This is a professional guy who really works hard at playing the four positions that we ask him to play,” Joe Girardi said. “He’s always prepared. I looked at him and I said, ‘Are you prepared to hit?’ And he said, ‘Yes I am.’ He’d already swung in the cage, stretched. I’m real happy with him.”
Nix saw five straight sliders from a right-handed reliever. He was really brought in to setup a favorable matchup for Chavez, who was on deck, but Nix drove the fifth slider to left-center field for a three-run, bases-clearing, go-ahead double.
“I don’t know how he does it,” Derek Jeter said. “To be quite honest with you, that’s a talent that I don’t think I have, sitting around all day and then coming up and getting a hit in a big situation. It’s tough to sit around and then go up there and hit. That was a big hit for us. Jayson works hard.”
There’s a chance the right-handed half of this platoon with be Eduardo Nunez at some point, and there’s a chance the Yankees will make some sort of trade to help fill the void, but for now it’s Nix. And for at least one day, Nix seemed as good an option as anyone.
“Whenever I get my chances, whenever they are, I hope to be able to do something positive,” he said. “To be able to come through today was good.”
How’s that new top of the order looking? “It was good today,” Girardi said. “I’m not sure what we’ll do against the lefty on Saturday, but I do like it.” Leadoff man Ichiro Suzuki had a hit for a third straight day, and No. 2 hitter Jeter went 3-for-4 with a home run and the hit-by-pitch that started that eighth-inning rally.
Girardi indicated that he might switch up the top of the order against left-handed pitching, and Nick Swisher indicated that he fully expects to be ready by the time the Yankees face a lefty starter on Saturday. Actually, Swisher is hoping to play Friday. He ran and took indoor batting practice today. He’ll go to Yankee Stadium for more hitting and running tomorrow. “I feel good,” Swisher said. “I’ve done everything they’ve told me to do. We’ll do that workout tomorrow and Friday, we’ll see what happens. See what they say on Friday.”
Pitching for a second straight day, Joba Chamberlain pitched a scoreless inning with High-A Tampa. He allowed an infield single and a pair of groundball outs, including one one which Chamberlain had to cover first. The runner he allowed was thrown out trying to steal against Gary Sanchez.
By the way, breakout prospect Tyler Austin is back in the Tampa lineup today. He’s been out since being hit by a pitch on July 3.
Eduardo Nunez started at shortstop — not third base — for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tonight.
Alex Rodriguez had a soft cast on his left hand today. He said the Seattle doctor didn’t give him any sort of additional diagnosis. He’ll wait to see Dr. Ahmad tomorrow before trying to figure out how long he’ll be out. “I’ve got to talk to Ahmad, but I certainly expect to come back and come back strong,” he said. “The one good thing here is that we play through the end of October.”
Ivan Nova allowed a career-high six walks through five innings today. He gave up just two hits, which is the reason he was able to limit the Mariners to two runs. “I didn’t really have my fastball command today,” Nova said. “I fell behind the hitters the whole game. Six walks. It wasn’t a good day for me. We got the win and I’m happy for that. … Every time we win, it don’t matter if I pitch good or not. We focus on winning games.”
Girardi said he wasn’t sure what exactly was causing Nova’s problems. This isn’t exactly the kind of lineup you’d expect him to nibble against. “Some days it just happens,” Girardi said. “I’m sure Larry (Rothschild) could recognize what he was doing, but you never know when it’s going to happen and it happened to him today. The thing is, he didn’t break. There were a lot of opportunities where he could have gotten in a lot of trouble, then the bullpen did a tremendous job.”
Jeter was hit by a pitch. Again. Did he think anything of it? “Did I think anything?” Jeter asked. “Yeah, it hurt. Yeah, that’s what I thought. … It would be pretty dumb to do it on purpose, leading off an inning in a one-run game. So, no.”
Ichiro said he was happy to be on the other side of a Yankees rally. “Being on the opposing side late in the game, I saw it many times,” he said. “That pressure that they put on. I was able to see it on this team this time.”
Ichiro on his final series in Seattle this season: “I was here 11 and a half years. I didn’t really show it, but inside I was really going through some emotional times. It was very special these last few days, but definitely emotional inside.”
Crazy day for Ramiro Pena who woke up at 2 a.m. with a call from Dave Miley saying he’d been called up. He then caught a 9:30 a.m. flight out of Charlotte, landed in Seattle a little before noon, got caught in traffic, got to the park in the second inning, then left with the team to fly back to New York. “I’ll take it,” he said. “Good wake-up call.”
Final word goes to Girardi: “After losing five games by a total of six runs, to be able to win a series I think was important going into an off day. Two and five is not what we want, but we won the second series of the road trip and it will be a happier plane flight.”

The Yankees take the series in Seattle with a late rally
The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners by the score of 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The game took place at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington. Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and was wild but effective enough. The Yankees bullpen was great and Jayson Nix was their offensive hero. Hisashi Iwakuma started for the Mariners and pitched pretty well but didn’t have the endurance. The Mariners bullpen blew the game for them. The Mariners offense only produced three hits.
Nova pitched five innings giving up two runs on two hits. He walked six and struck out five. Clay Rapada pitched 2/3 of an inning and didn’t give up a hit or a run, David Phelps earned his second win of the season pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings with a couple of strikeouts and David Robertson pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts. Rafael Soriano saved his 26th game of the season pitching an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. Iwakuma pitched five innings giving up six hits and a run with three walks and three strikeouts. Oliver Perez pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Josh Kinney pitched an inning giving up a run with two strikeouts and Lucas Luetge took his first loss of the season. He pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs. Kelley pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout. Delabar pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.

In the first inning the Yankees took a 1-0 lead. Jeter hit a solo homerun. The Mariners came back with two runs in the bottom of the first. They got an RBI walk from Seager and a ground out from Carp to make it 2-1. In the eighth inning Nix hit a pinch hit three run double to make it 4-2 Yankees and Martin added an RBI single to make it 5-2 which was the final score.

Nova pitched five innings giving up two runs on two hits. He walked six and struck out five. Clay Rapada pitched 2/3 of an inning and didn’t give up a hit or a run, David Phelps earned his second win of the season pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings with a couple of strikeouts and David Robertson pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts. Rafael Soriano saved his 26th game of the season pitching an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. Iwakuma pitched five innings giving up six hits and a run with three walks and three strikeouts. Oliver Perez pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Josh Kinney pitched an inning giving up a run with two strikeouts and Lucas Luetge took his first loss of the season. He pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs. Kelley pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout. Delabar pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.
Ichiro Suzuki had a hit, Derek Jeter had three hits and an RBI and Robinson Cano had two hits. Mark Teixeira had a hit and drew a walk, Curtis Granderson had a hit and Nix had a hit and three RBI. Eric Chavez drew two walks and Russell Martin had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk. Cano and Nix each had a double. Jeter hit a homerun and the Yankees were 4-13 with runners in scoring position and they left eight men on base. Granderson had a stolen base and Suzuki was caught stealing.
Michael Saunders had a hit, Jesus Montero had a hit and John Jaso drew three walks. Seager had an RBI and drew two walks, Mike Carp had an RBI and drew a walk and Casper Wells had a hit. The Mariners were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and they left six men on base.
In the first inning the Yankees took a 1-0 lead. Jeter hit a solo homerun. The Mariners came back with two runs in the bottom of the first. They got an RBI walk from Seager and a ground out from Carp to make it 2-1. In the eighth inning Nix hit a pinch hit three run double to make it 4-2 Yankees and Martin added an RBI single to make it 5-2 which was the final score.
