The Mets get routed by the Colorado Rockies

The New York Mets were defeated by the Colorado Rockies 18-9 on Friday night in Colorado. The Mets called up Chris Schwinden to take the spot of starter Mike Pelfrey. Schwinden did not have a good debut at all. Pelfrey is 99 percent sure he will undergo season ending Tommy John surgery. Miguel Batista and Tim Byrdak were the only Mets pitchers to come away unscathed. It wasn’t a good night for the Mets pitching staff. Ruben Tejada and Scott Hairston had big nights with four hits each. Hairston hit for the cycle.
Schwinden pitched four innings giving up seven hits and six runs with five of them being earned. He walked one and didn’t strike out a batter. Manny Acosta took the loss pitching 1/3 of an inning giving up five hits and seven runs with two walks, Miguel Batista pitched 2/3 of an inning retiring both batters that he faced and Ramon Ramirez pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up four hits and four unearned runs. He walked one and struck out two. Bobby Parnell pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and one run and Byrdak pitched to two batters and retired them both. Drew Pomeranz started for the Rockies and pitched four innings giving up five hits and two runs, one of them earned. He walked three and struck out four. The Rockies used five pitchers out of the bullpen. Rogers struggled pitching an inning and giving up six hits and four runs with three strikeouts. Matt Reynolds picked up the win pitching an inning and giving up two hits and striking out one. He won his third game of the season without a loss.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis had a hit and drew a walk, Tejada had four hits and David Wright had a hit and drew two walks. Hairston had four hits and four RBI and hit for the cycle. Lucas Duda had two hits and two RBI, Lutz had a hit and Mike Nickeas had two hits, an RBI and a walk. Josh Thole had a hit, Schwinden had a hit and an RBI. Hairston had a double, triple and a homerun. The Mets were 5-14 with 11 men left on base. Wright was caught stealing. Shwinden, Nickeas, Tejada, Lutz, Thole and Murphy each had an error. The Mets did not have a good game at all with the bat pitching and six errors on the night.

The Rockies had four players with at least three hits on the night. Carlos Gonzalez had three hits and six RBI. Ramon Hernandez had five RBI, Dexter Fowler had three hits and three RBI and Marco Scutaro had four hits and drew a walk.

The Mets got a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Wright was picked off and caught stealing but a run scored on the play. The Rockies scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Gonzalez had an RBI groundout and Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo homerun. Hairston hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning to tie the game at two. The fifth inning is when things got out of hand. Hairston hit an RBI triple, Duda hit an RBI single, Nickeas had an RBI single and Schwinden had an RBI single to make it a 6-2 game in favor of the Mets. The Rockies came back in the bottom of the inning with 11 runs. The score at the end of five was 13-6 in favor of the Rockies. In the sixth Hairston hit a two run double and Duda had an RBI single to make it 13-9. In the seventh Todd Helton hit an RBI single and Hernandez hit a grand slam to make it 18-9 and that was it for the scoring.

The Mets record dropped to 11-9 and the Rockies improved to 10-9. The two teams will meet in game two of the three game series on Saturday night.

Yanks go for 4 game sweep over Bosox

The New York Yankees will try and get the 4 game sweep over their rivals the Boston Red Sox tonight at 8 on ESPN. The Yankees DFA'D Josh Towers and activated Chad Gaudin. Alfredo Aceves has a sore back and they are not sure if he will be able to pitch tonight. Here are the pregame notes and lineups from the Lohud Yankees Blog by Peter Abraham. The Yankees have won 30 of their last 40 games. They have a 5.5 game lead which is the largest lead since they finished the 2006 season 10 games ahead. Boston has lost 5 straight and 13 of their last 20. Andy Pettitte is 1-1 with a 2.36 era since the all star break. He is 16-9 with a 3.76 era in 31 career starts against Boston. The Yankees are 17-3 in their last 20 home games. Yankee starters have gone 20 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs on 9 hits while striking out 20 and walking 15. Yankee relievers have allowed 5 hits and struck out 10 in 8 2/3 scoreless innings in this series. The Red Sox have not scored in 24 innings. They have 2 runs in the last 28, 6 in the last 33 and 12 in the last 55. Boston is batting 144 with 35 strikeouts in the last 3 games. They are also 3 for 33 with runners in scoring position. Mo has not allowed a run in 20 1/3 innings. The Yankees have homered in 86 of 110 games and 51 of 55 at home. Phil Hughes as a reliever has allowed 5 earned runs in 31 innings and struck out 40. Robbie Cano is batting 360 without runners in scoring position and 205 with runners in scoring position. Cano is 11 of his last 22, maybe he will start hitting in the clutch now. The Yankees at this same p0int last season were 60-50 and 5 1/2 games out. Melky is 3 for 21 since hitting for the cycle. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(DH) Posada(C) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Hairston(3B) Boston Lineup: Ellsbury(CF) Pedroia(2B) Martinez(1B) Youkilis(3B) Bay(LF) Drew(RF) Lowell(DH) Varitek(C) Green(SS)

Yanks avoid the sweep

The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox today by the score of 8-5. We expected to see a pitchers duel with Mark Buehrle and CC Sabathia but didn't get it. CC Sabathia gave up 4 runs in the third inning but then settled down and gave them 4 shutout innings. Joe Girardi I think pushed the envelope too far and brought him out for the 8th, he gave up a leadoff double and then was pulled. Phil Hughes came on to get 2 outs and then Mariano came on to get the last out but not before giving up a cheap rbi single. CC Sabathia has not pitched like an ace especially lately and that is a cause for concern. I know a lot of people are into this thing with him pitching too many innings over the last couple of years which is true but I don't buy it now because his velocity is still high and his stuff is good but his location has been off. I am expecting him to go on a Burnett run and maybe him pulling out the win today can get him going. He really needs to pitch like an ace the rest of the season and carry the Yankees to the AL east title. The Yankees offense was led by Melky Cabrera who hit for the first Yankees cycle since Tony Fernandez in 1995. He also had 4 rbi's. I am really liking Jerry Hairston Jr. as he can play anywhere and can do whatever you want, sacrifice, get a rbi, get some hits. He reminds me of the late 90s teams that had those role players that were so important. Derek Jeter had 2 hits and a rbi and Johnny Damon, Mark Teixeira and A-rod all had a hit. Damon also had a rbi. Nick Swisher had a couple of hits and a couple of walks, Jerry Hairston had a couple of hits and a rbi and also a sac bunt. The Yankees now head to Toronto with a off day tomorrow and then face off against Roy Halladay which won't be easy at all, they can't look ahead at the Red Sox though and have to at least get one win in Toronto.
