New York Yankees complete the sweep with win over the Tampa Bay Rays


The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 3-2.  Luis Severino started for the Yankees and he pitched wonderfully.  Aaron Hicks provided the offense with two homeruns. 

Severino pitched seven innings giving up two runs on five hits.  He walked one and struck out 11 and earned his first victory of the season and first since Sept of 2015.  Dellin Betances got himself into trouble but then out of it pitching an inning and giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts and Aroldis Chapman pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out two and earned his second save of the season. 

Matt Andriese pitched six innings giving up five hits and a run with three walks and five strikeouts.  Erasmo Ramirez pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run, Xavier Cedeno lost his first game of the season pitching 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run and Tommy Hunter pitched to one batter and retired him.  Danny Farquhar pitched an inning giving up two walks and he struck out two. 

Jacoby Ellsbury drew a walk, Hicks had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk and Matt Holliday drew a walk.  Starlin Castro had a hit and drew a walk, Chase Headley had a hit and Aaron Judge drew a walk.  Austin Romine had a couple of hits, Ronald Torreyes had a hit and Romine and Castro each hit a double.  Hicks hit two homeruns and the Yankees were 0-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Judge was picked off and Ellsbury had an outfield assist.

Corey Dickerson had two hits, Evan Longori had a hit and Logan Morrison had a hit and drew a walk.  Mallex Smith had a hit, Peter Bourjos had a hit and an RBI and Jesus Sucre had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Bourjos hit a homerun and the Rays were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Sucre had a pickoff. 

In the first Hicks hit a solo homerun to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the second Sucre hit an RBI single to tie the game at one.  Bourjos hit a solo homerun in the fifth to give the Rays a 2-1 lead.  In the seventh Hicks hit a two-run homerun to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead and that would be the final score. 

The Yankees swept the three-game series from the Rays and will begin a three game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.   

New York Yankees defeat the Tampa Bay Rays behind strong debut by Jordan Montgomery


The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday afternoon.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 8-4.  Jordan Montgomery made his MLB debut and pitched well.  Kyle Higashioka also made his MLB debut behind the plate.  The offense was led by Starlin Castro, Chase Headley and Aaron Judge who hit another homerun his third in his last three games. 

Montgomery pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up three runs with two of them being earned on five hits.  He walked two and struck out seven.  Bryan Mitchell pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings, Tyler Clippard pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Tommy Layne pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout.  Jonathan Holder pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and Aroldis Chapman pitched 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout and picked up his first save of the season. 

Ian Snell started for the Rays and pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up two hits and two unearned runs with three walks and a strikeout.  Jumbo Diaz took his first loss of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and giving up three hits and three runs with two of them being earned and a walk, Xavier Cedeno didn’t record an out and gave up a hit and an unearned run and Erasmo Ramirez pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up two hits and two runs.  Danny Farquhar pitched an inning with a walk. 

Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and an RBI, Aaron Hicks had two RBI and drew two walks and Matt Holliday drew a walk.  Chris Carter had a hit, Castro had two hits and Headley had two hits.  Judge had two hits, three RBI and drew a walk, Pete Kozma drew a walk and Judge hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 2-11 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Ellsbury had a stolen base, Castro committed an error and Higashioka had a passed ball.  Hicks and Judge each had an outfield assist. 

Steven Souza Jr. had a hit, Kevin Kiermaier had a hit and Evan Longoria drew a walk.  Rickie Weeks Jr. had a hit and two RBI, Corey Dickerson had a hit and an RBI and Derek Norris had a hit.  Daniel Robertson had a hit and drew a walk, Tim Beckham had a hit and Peter Bourjos had a hit.  Mallex Smith had a hit, Souza Jr. and Dickerson each hit a double and Weeks Jr. hit a homerun.  The Rays were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Beckham and Cedeno each committed an error. 

In the first Weeks Jr. hit a two-run homerun to give the Rays a 2-0 lead.  In the fifth Weeks Jr. reached on a fielding error and a run scored.  The play had to be reviewed and was overturned on replay.  In the fifth Hicks drew an RBI walk to cut the lead to 3-1 and a wild pitch made it a 3-2 game.  In the sixth Judge hit an RBI single and Gardner reached on a fielding error to give the Yankees the lead at 4-3.  Ellsbury hit an RBI single and Hicks hit an RBI ground out to extend the lead to 6-3 still in the sixth inning.  In the seventh Judge hit a two-run homerun to push the lead to 8-3.  Dickerson hit an RBI double in the eighth to cut the lead to 8-4 but that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game three of three on Thursday night with the Yankees looking for the sweep.  Luis Severino will make his second start of the season for the Yankees.  Greg Bird is expected back after missing the last few games with an ankle injury and illness.

New York Mets storm the Philadelphia Phillies behind Cespedes three homer game


The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.  The game took place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the final score was 14-4.  Matt Harvey started for the Mets and he pitched well.  He left early with a strained hamstring but said he will be fine for his next start.  Asdrubal Cabrera and Yoenis Cespedes each had four hits.  Cespedes hit three homeruns to lead the offense. 

Harvey pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up five hits and two runs with a walk and six strikeouts.  Harvey won his second game of the season.  Hansel Robles pitched 1 1/3 innings striking out two, Josh Edgin pitched an inning giving up two hits and two runs and Paul Sewald pitched an inning giving up a hit and he walked one. 

Clay Buchholz lost his first game of the season pitching 2 1/3 innings giving up eight hits and six runs with a walk and two strikeouts.  Adam Morgan pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and four runs with two walks and five strikeouts, Joely Rodriguez pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up four hits and three runs with two walks and two strikeouts and Jeanmar Gomez pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a run. 

Curtis Granderson had a hit and drew two walks, Cabrera had four hits and two RBI and Cespedes had four hits and five RBI.  Jay Bruce had a hit and two RBI, Neil Walker had two hits and Lucas Duda had four hits and two RBI.  Jose Reyes had a hit, Travis d’Arnaud had three hits, three RBI and drew a walk and Ty Rivera drew a walk.  Cabrera, Granderson, Reyes, Duda, d’Arnaud and Cespedes each hit a double.  Cespedes hit three homeruns and the Mets were 6-16 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.  Cesar Hernandez had two hits, Howie Kendrick had a hit and drew a walk and Daniel Nava had a hit and an RBI.  Odubel Herrera had a hit, Maikel Franco had a hit and two RBI and Michael Saunders had an RBI.  Cameron Rupp drew a walk, Morgan had a hit and Andrew Knapp had a hit.  Hernandez and Nava hit a double and Franco hit a homerun and the Phillies were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. 

In the first Cespedes hit a three-run homerun giving the Mets a 3-0 lead.  In the second Bruce hit a two-run single and the lead was extended to 5-0.  In the second Franco hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 5-1.  In the third d’Arnaud hit an RBI single and the lead was pushed to 6-1.  Cabrera hit a solo homerun in the fourth and Cespedes also hit a solo homerun and the lead was 8-1  In the fourth Saunders hit into an RBI force out to cut the lead to 8-2.  In the fifth Cespedes hit his third homer a solo shot to make it a 9-2 game.  In the sixth Duda hit a solo homerun and the lead was 10-2.  d’Arnaud hit a two-run homerun in the eighth and Cabrera hit an RBI single to make it 13-2.  Nava hit an RBI double and Franco hit an RBI ground out in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 13-4.  Duda hit his second homerun of the game in the ninth a solo shot to make it 14-4 and that was the final score. 

The Mets have taken the first two games of the series and will play game three on Wednesday night.  They will be looking to sweep the series.

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.  The game took place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the final score was 4-3.  Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and he pitched well.  Jay Bruce led the offense with two hits and three RBI. 

deGrom pitched six innings giving up six hits and two runs with two walks and three strikeouts.  Josh Smoker pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk, Jerry Blevins pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout and he won his first game of the season.  Hansel Robles pitched to two batters retiring them both and Addison Reed pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with two strikeouts and he saved his second game of the season. 

Jerad Eickhoff started for the Phillies and he pitched seven innings giving up three hits and two runs with one of them being earned.  He walked four and struck out seven.  Edubray Ramos pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a run and a walk and he struck out one.  Ramos took his first loss of the season and Joely Rodriguez pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a run. 

Asdrubal Cabrera had a hit and drew a walk, Bruce had two hits and three RBI with a walk and Curtis Granderson had a hit.  Neil Walker had an RBI and drew a walk, Lucas Duda drew two walks and Cabrera hit a double.  Bruce hit two homeruns and the Mets were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. 

Cesar Hernandez had a hit and drew a walk, Howie Kendrick had a hit and drew a walk and Odubel Herrera had a hit.  Maikel Franco had two hits and drew a walk, Michael Saunders had two hits and an RBI and Cameron Rupp had an RBI and drew a walk.  Brock Stassi had a hit and an RBI, Freddy Galvis had a hit and Daniel Nava had a hit.  Stassi hit a homerun and the Phillies were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Hernandez and Rupp each committed an error and Rupp had a passed ball. 

In the first Saunders hit an RBI single and Rupp drew an RBI walk to make it 2-0 Phillies.  In the fourth Bruce hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the seventh Walker hit a sac fly to tie the game at two.  In the eighth Bruce hit a two-run homerun to give the Mets a 4-2 lead.  In the ninth Stassi hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 4-3 but that would be the final score.

Michael Pineda stars as the New York Yankees defeat the Tampa Bay Rays in home openerNew


The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday afternoon.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 8-1.  Michael Pineda started for the Yankees and retired the first 20 batters that he faced.  Matt Holliday, Chase Headley and Aaron Judge each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Pineda pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with no walks and 11 strikeouts.  Pineda won his first game of the season and first since August of 2016.  Tyler Clippard pitched to one batter and retired him and Chasen Shreve pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Alex Cobb pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up six hits and five runs with four of them being earned.  He walked one and struck out seven.  Cobb lost his first game of the season and Austin Pruitt pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up four hits and three runs with two of them being earned. 

Brett Gardner had a hit, Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and an RBI and Holliday had two hits and an RBI.  Chris Carter had a hit and an RBI, Starlin Castro had a hit and two RBI and Headley had two hits, one RBI and drew a walk.  Judge had two hits and an RBI, Ronald Torreyes hit an RBI and Ellsbury and Holliday each hit a double.  Carter hit a triple and Judge, Headley and Castro each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 3-11 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Gardner had two stolen bases. 

Evan Longoria had a hit, Logan Morrison had a hit and an RBI and Longoria hit a double.  Morrison hit a homerun and the Rays were 0-1 with runners in scoring position and left one man on base.  Miller and Pruitt each committed an error. 

In the third Ellsbury hit an RBI double to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Judge hit a solo homerun to extend the lead to 2-0.  In the seventh Headley hit a solo homerun to push the lead to 3-0.  In the eighth Morrison hit a solo homerun to make it a 3-1 game.  In the bottom of the eighth Holliday hit an RBI double and Carter hit an RBI triple to make it 5-1.  Castro hit a two-run homerun and Torreyes hit an RBI ground out still in the eighth to make it 8-1 which was the final score. 

The Yankees and Rays will be off on Tuesday and then continue their series on Wednesday afternoon.
