The New York Mets blowout the Philadelphia Phillies in matinee final


The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday afternoon. The final score was 11-3 and the game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Carlos Torres started and pitched well and most of the bullpen did also. Eric Young Jr. had three hits and Daniel Murphy had four to lead the offense.

Torres pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up four hits and a run. He walked none and struck out six and won his third game of the season. Scott Rice struck out the only batter that he faced, Gonzalez Germen pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and two runs and Pedro Feliciano retired the only batter that he faced. LaTroy Hawkins pitched an inning striking out one.

Young Jr. had three hits and three RBI, Murphy had four hits and two RBI and Andrew Brown had two hits and two RBI. Lucas Duda had a hit and drew a walk, Justin Turner drew a walk and Anthony Recker had a hit, two RBI and drew two walks. Omar Quintanilla had an RBI and drew a walk, Torres drew a walk and Murphy hit two doubles. Young hit a triple and Recker and Brown each hit a homerun. The Mets were 4-13 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Murphy, Brown and den Dekker each had a stolen base. Quintanilla committed an error.

Ethan Martin started and lost his third game of the season. He pitched four innings giving up four hits and three runs with three walks and nine strikeouts. Cesar Jimenez pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up four hits and three runs with a walk and two strikeouts, Justin De Fratus pitched an inning giving up two hits and four runs with two walks and two strikeouts and J.C. Ramirez pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a run.

Chase Utley had two hits, Dominick Brown had two hits and Carlos Ruiz had a hit. Darin Ruf had an RBI, John McDonald had a hit and Roger Bernadina had a hit and two RBI. Ruiz and Utley each hit a double, Bernadina hit a homerun and the Phillies were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.

Murphy hit an RBI double in the third giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. Recker hit a two run homerun in the fourth to make it a 3-0 lead. Brown hit an RBI single in the fifth extending the lead to 4-0 Mets. Recker scored on a balk in the sixth and Murphy hit an RBI single to make it a 6-0 game. Ruf hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to get the Phillies on the board. Quintanilla walked and Young hit a three run triple to extend the Mets lead to 10-1. In the eighth Bernadina hit a two run homerun and it was 10-3 Mets. Brown hit a solo homerun in the eighth to make it 11-3 and that was the final score.

The Mets record improved to 60-72 and the Phillies record fell to 61-73. The Mets will begin a three game series at home against the Washington Nationals on Friday night.
