The New York Yankees avoid a sweep in Tampa Bay


The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon. The final score was 3-2 in 11 innings and the game took place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and pitched well and the bullpen was great. Robinson Cano led the offense with three hits and two RBI.

Nova pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up two runs and six hits with six walks and three strikeouts. Shawn Kelley pitched 1/3 of an inning getting an out on a caught stealing. David Robertson pitched two perfect innings with a couple of strikeouts, Joba Chamberlain walked and struck out one batter in 1/3 of an inning and Boone Logan picked up his fourth win of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and retiring both batters. Mariano Rivera saved his 38th game of the season pitching a perfect inning.

Brett Gardner drew a walk, Ichiro Suzuki had two hits and Cano had three hits and two RBI. Alfonso Soriano had two hits, Curtis Granderson had a hit, an RBI and drew two walks and Eduardo Nunez had a hit. Alex Rodriguez had a hit in his one pinch hit at-bat. Cano and Soriano each hit a double and Cano hit a homerun. The Yankees were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Soriano had a stolen base and Gardner was caught stealing. The Soriano stolen base set up the winning run.

Alex Cobb pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and two runs with three walks and five strikeouts. Alex Torres struck out the only batter that he faced, Jake McGee pitched a perfect inning striking out the sides and Joel Peralta pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Jamey Wright took his second loss of the season pitching two innings and giving up two hits and a run.

Ivan DeJesus had three hits, Ben Zobrist drew a walk and Evan Longoria had two hits and two RBI. Matt Joyce had a hit and drew a walk, Wil Myers drew a walk and James Loney drew a walk. Yunel Escobar drew a walk, Jose Molina drew two walks and Joyce hit a double. Longoria hit a homerun and the Rays were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Escobar and DeJesus were each caught stealing. Escobar committed an error and Myers had an outfield assist.

Longoria hit an RBI single in the first to give the Rays a 1-0 lead. The game could have been over right there but Mark Reynolds started a nice 5-2-3 double play to get the Yankees out of a jam. Cano hit a solo homerun in the fourth to tie the game at one. In the sixth Cano hit an RBI double to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. The Rays would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Longoria solo homerun. The Yankees scored in the 11th on a Granderson sacrifice fly to take a 3-2 lead and that would be the final score.

The Yankees were able to salvage the finale of the three game series. The Yankees record improved to 69-61 and the Rays record fell to 74-54. The Yankees will head to Toronto and start a three game series on Monday night.
