The New York Yankees lose a heartbreaker to the Boston Red Sox


The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees on Thursday night. The final score was 9-8 in ten innings and the game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and wasn’t very good. The Yankees had a big rally in the seventh and then blew it with two outs and two strikes in the ninth.

Nova pitched four innings giving up five hits and three runs. He walked two and struck out three. Preston Claiborne didn’t record an out and gave up four hits and three runs with a walk, Cesar Cabral struck out the only batter that he faced and Adam Warren pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up three hits and a run with a walk and four strikeouts. David Robertson pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts, Mariano Rivera blew his sixth save pitching an inning and giving up two hits and a run and Joba Chamberlain took the loss pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run. It was Jobas first loss of the season. Boone Logan pitched 1/3 of an inning and intentionally walked a batter.

Brett Gardner had two hits and an RBI, Derek Jeter drew two walks and Robinson Cano had a hit and three RBI. Alfonso Soriano had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Curtis Granderson had a hit and an RBI and Alex Rodriguez had two hits. Lyle Overbay had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk, Ichiro Suzuki had a hit and drew a walk and Vernon Wells had a hit. Cano and Granderson hit a double and Rodriguez hit two doubles. The Yankees were 6-14 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Suzuki, Gardner, Overbay, Rodriguez, Wells and Soriano each stole a base and Soriano was caught stealing. Romine committed an error and Warren had a pickoff.

Jake Peavy started for the Red Sox and pitched six innings giving up six hits and four runs with three walks and four strikeouts. Matt Thornton pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up hit and two runs with a walk, Junichi Tazawa pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and two runs with two strikeouts and Craig Breslow earned his fifth win of the season. He pitched two innings giving up a walk and striking out two and Koji Uehara earned his 18th save of the season pitching a perfect inning.

Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits and an RBI, Shane Victorino had two hits and three RBI and Dustin Pedroia had a hit. David Ortiz had two hits and drew two walks, Daniel Nava had a hit and drew two walks and Mike Napoli had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk. Stephen Drew had a hit and an RBI, Lavernway had two hits and two RBI, Will Middlebrooks had two hits and an RBI and Ellsbury and Nava each hit a double. Middlebrooks and Victorino each hit a homerun. The Red Sox were 5-15 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base. Berry, Ellsbury and Victorino each stole a base and Ellsbury was picked off.

In the third Ellsbury hit an RBI double, Victorino had an RBI groundout and the Red Sox had a 2-0 lead. The Yankees tied the game in the third on a Cano two run double. The Red Sox took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a Middlebrooks solo homerun. In the fifth Victorino hit a solo homerun, Napoli hit an RBI single and Lavarnway had an RBI ground out to make it a 6-2 lead. Lavarnway hit an RBI single in the seventh to make it 7-2 Red Sox. The Yankees had a six run seventh inning to take an 8-7 lead. Gardner hit an RBI single, Cano grounded into a force out scoring a run, Soriano hit an RBI single and Granderson hit an RBI double. Overbay hit a two run single. The Red Sox were able to tie the game with two outs and two strikes in the ninth. Drew hit an RBI single to tie it at eight and then in the tenth Victorino hit an RBI single to make it 9-8 and that was the game winning hit as the Red Sox held on for the victory.

The two teams will play game two of four on Friday night. The Yankees record fell to 75-65 and the Red Sox record improved to 85-57.
