New York Yankees lose a marathon 19 inning game to the Boston Red Sox



The New York Yankees were defeated by the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, early Saturday morning by the score of 6-5.  The game took place at Yankee stadium in the Bronx, New York and took 19 innings to complete.  Nathan Eovaldi started and pitched pretty well and the Yankees bullpen pitched great.  The offense didn't do much but Chase Headley and Mark Teixeira each hit a homerun. 

Eovaldi pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up eight hits and three runs with a walk and a strikeout.  Chris Martin pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a walk and he struck out one, Justin Wilson pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings striking out one and Dellin Betances pitched 1 1/3 innings walking two and striking out two.  Andrew Miller pitched an inning walking two and striking out two, David Carpenter pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk and Chasen Shreve pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up three hits and striking out four.  Esmil Rogers was the hard luck loser pitching 4 2/3 innings giving up six hits and three runs with two of them being earned and he walked one and struck out four.  Rogers lost his first game of the season and will have a lot of rest now.  Shreve also pitched great and will probably be headed to Scranton for his reward. 

Wade Miley started for the Red Sox and pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up four hits and two runs with two walks and six strikeouts.  Robbie Ross Jr. faced two hitters and retired them both, Alexi Ogando pitched a perfect inning and Junichi Tazawa pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one.  Edward Mujica blew his first save of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout.  Anthony Varvaro pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk, Tommy Layne pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up one hit and striking out three and Craig Breslow pitched two perfect innings with a strikeout.  Steven Wright picked up his first win and will be headed to AAA for his efforts.  He pitched five innings giving up six hits and two runs with three walks and a strikeout. 

Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits, Brett Gardner had two hits and drew two walks and Alex Rodriguez had two hits and an RBI.  Garrett Jones had a hit, Mark Teixeira had a hit and an RBI with two walks and Brian McCann had two hits and an RBI.  Chase Headley had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Carlos Beltran had a hit and an RBI and Stephen Drew had a hit.  Gregorio Petit drew a walk, Didi Gregorius had a hit and Gardner, Gregorius, McCann and Beltran each hit a double.  Headley and Teixeira each hit a homerun and the Yankees were 2-12 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base.  Gardner was caught stealing and Headley and Gardner were each picked off of first base.  Petit committed an error, Murphy had a passed ball and Ellsbury had an outfield assist. 

Mookie Betts had a hit, an RBI an drew a walk, Dustin Pedroia had two hits and drew a walk and David Ortiz had two hits, an RBI an drew a walk.  Hanley Ramirez had three hits, Pablo Sandoval had four hits and two RBI and Mike Napoli drew a walk.  Daniel Nava had two hits and two RBI, Shane Victorino drew a walk and Xander Bogaerts had four hits and drew a walk.  Sandy Leon drew a walk, Hanigan drew a walk and Betts hit a double.  Ortiz hit a homerun and the Red Sox were 3-16 with runners in scoring position and left 20 men on base.  Bogaerts had a stolen base and committed an error and Miley and Wright each had a pickoff. 

In the first Sandoval had an RBI single, Nava had a two run single in the sixth and it was 3-0 Red Sox.  In the bottom of the sixth Rodriguez had an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1 and McCann hit a sac fly to make it 3-2.  Headley hit a solo homerun in the ninth to tie the game at three.  In the sixteenth inning Ortiz hit a solo homerun to give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead.  Teixeira homered in the bottom of the sixteenth to tie the game at four.  In the eighteenth Sandoval hit an RBI single to give the Red Sox a 5-4 lead and in the bottom of the inning Beltran hit an RBI double to tie the game at five.  In the ninteenth Bette hit a sac fly to make it 6-5 and that was the final score. 

The Yankees are 1-3 and the Red Sox 3-1 on the young season.  They will play game two of their three game series on Saturday afternoon.  Adam Warren will make his first start of the season against Joe Kelly who will come off of the DL and make his first start of the season.  There will be some tired players and the starters will have to go pretty deep in the game with really tired bullpens.
