The New York Mets lose a tight one in Atlanta



The New York Mets were defeated by the Atlanta Braves on Saturday afternoon.  The game took place in Atlanta and the final score was 5-3.  Dillon Gee started and did not pitch well.  Lucas Duda had two hits and the team only had three. 

Gee pitched five innings giving up eight hits and five runs with no walks and two strikeouts.  Gee lost his first game of the season.  Alex Torres pitched an inning giving up a hit, Sean Gilmartin pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts and Erik Goeddel pitched to one batter and retired him. 

Julio Teheran pitched six innings giving up two hits and three runs with one of them being earned.  He walked four and struck out five and won his second game of the season.  Brandon Cunniff pitched to two batters and retired them both, Luis Avilan pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings and Jim Johnson pitched one innings giving up a hit and picking up his first save of the season. 

Curtis Granderson drew a walk, Duda had two hits and Michael Cuddyer drew a walk.  Daniel Murphy drew a walk, Juan Lagares had a hit and an RBI and Travis d'Arnaud had an RBI.  Wilmer Flores drew a walk, Duda hit a double and the Mets were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. 

Eric Young Jr. had a hit and an RBI, Nick Markakis had two hits and an RBI and Freddie Freeman had a hit and an RBI.  Kelly Johnson had two hits, Alberto Callespo had a hit and Christian Bethancourt had a hit and an RBI.  Andrelton Simmons had a hit and an RBI, Callespo, Bethancourt and Simmons each hit a double.  Young Jr. hit a triple and Freeman hit a homerun.  The Braves 4-5 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.  Callespo committed an error. 

In the second Freeman hit a solo homerun to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.  In the fifth the Braves scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead.  Bethancourt hit an RBI double, Simmons hit an RBI double and Young Jr. hit an RBI triple.  Markakis hit an RBI single.  In the seventh the Mets got on the board.  Lagares reached on a fielding error and a run scored.  d'Arnaud was hit by a pitch to score a run and Flores grounded into a double play and a run scored.  The Mets cut the lead to 5-3 and that was the final score. 

The two teams will play the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon.  The Mets will then come home to New York and have their home opener on Monday afternoon with Jacob deGrom on the mound.
