New York Mets defeat the Seattle Mariners


The New York Mets defeated the Seattle Mariners on Friday night.  The game took place at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington and the final score was 7-5.  Rafael Montero started for the Mets and he didn’t pitch well.  The Mets bullpen did a good job and Asdrubal Cabrera had three hits to lead the offense. 

Montero pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up three hits and five runs with five walks and five strikeouts.  Josh Edgin pitched giving up a hit, Hansel Robles pitched an inning giving up two hits and he struck out one and Jerry Blevins won his fifth game of the season pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings with a strikeout.  Paul Sewald pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one and Addison Reed saved his 19th game of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit. 

Ariel Miranda pitched six innings giving up five hits and four runs with three of them being earned.  He walked one and struck out ten.  Nick Vincent pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts, Marc Rzepczynski pitched giving up a hit and a run and David Phelps lost his fifth game of the season pitching an inning and giving up four hits and two runs with a strikeout.  Casey Lawrence pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Michael Conforto had two hits and two RBI, Cabrera had three hits and Jay Bruce had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk.  Wilmer Flores had an RBI, Neil Walker had a hit and an RBI and Curtis Granderson had a hit and an RBI.  Jose Reyes had a hit, Reyes hit a double and Bruce hit a homerun.  Conforto hit two homeruns and the Mets were 2-5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. 

Jean Segura had a hit and drew a walk, Ben Gamel had a hit and Robinson Cano had an RBI.  Nelson Cruz drew two walks, Kyle Seager had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk and Danny Valencia had a hit.  Mitch Haniger had a hit, Jarrod Dyson had a hit and Mike Zunino had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Haniger hit a double, Zunino hit a homerun and the Mariners were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Zunino and Valencia each committed an error. 

In the first Bruce hit a two-run homerun giving the Mets a 2-0 lead.  In the third Conforto hit a solo homerun to extend the lead to 3-0.  Flores hit a sac fly to push the lead to 4-0.  In the third Zunino hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 4-1.  In the fifth a wild pitch made it 4-2 and Cano hit a sac fly to cut the lead to 4-3.  Seager hit a two-run single and it was 5-4 Seattle still in the fifth inning.  In the eighth Conforto hit a solo homerun to tie the game at five.  Walker hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 6-5 lead and Granderson hit an RBI single to push that lead to 7-5 which would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of three on Saturday.
