New York Yankees split a double header on Derek Jeter night with the Houston Astros


The New York Yankees split a doubleheader with the Houston Astros on Sunday.  It was also Derek Jeter night so it was a long, emotional day for the team.  The team also placed their closer Aroldis Chapman on the ten-day DL but say he should miss about a month.  In the first game of the double dip the Yankees defeated the Astros 11-6 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.  Luis Severino started for the Yankees and he didn’t pitch too well or deep into the game.  The Yankees bullpen pitched well.  Brett Gardner lead the offense with three hits.   

Severino pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up six hits and three runs.  He walked three and struck out two.  Chad Green pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts, Adam Warren won his first game of the season pitching two innings and giving up two hits and three runs with two of them being earned.  He walked one and struck out one and Jonathan Holder pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Mike Fiers started game one for the Astros and pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up four hits and four runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.  Michael Feliz pitched to one batter and struck him out, Will Harris lost his first game of the season pitching 1/3 of an inning and giving up three hits and three runs and Chris Devenski pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and three runs with a walk and a strikeout.  Tony Sipp pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts. 

Gardner had three hits and an RBI, Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and Matt Holliday had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk.  Starlin Castro had two hits and three RBI, Aaron Judge had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Didi Gregorius had a hit.  Chase Headley had a hit and three RBI, Chris Carter had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Gardner, Gregorius, Ellsbury, Castro and Carter each hit a double and Headley hit a triple.  Castro, Judge and Gardner each hit a homerun and the Yankees were 5-12 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Castro committed an error. 

George Springer had a hit, Josh Reddick had two hits and drew a walk and Jose Altuve drew a walk.  Carlos Correa had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Evan Gattis had two hits and two RBI and Marwin Gonzalez had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk.  Yuli Gurriel had two hits and an RBI, Nori Aoki drew a walk and the Astros were 5-13 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Gurriel committed two errors and Correa committed an error. 

In the first Holliday hit an RBI ground out to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the third Correa hit an RBI single to tie the game at one and Gattis hit an RBI single to give the Astros a 2-1 lead.  Gonzalez hit a RBI single to push the Astros lead to 3-1.  In the fourth Castro and Judge went back-to-back giving the Yankees a 4-3 lead.  In the seventh Gattis hit an RBI single to tie the game at four and Gonzalez reached on a force attempt error and Gurriel hit a sac fly giving the Astros the lead at 6-4.  In the bottom of the seventh Holliday hit an RBI single, Castro hit an RBI double and Headley hit a three-run triple giving the Yankees a 9-6 lead.  Carter hit an RBI double to extend the lead to 10-6 and in the bottom of the eighth Gardner hit a solo homerun to make it 11-6 and that would be the final score. 

In the second game the Astros jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back as they won the game 10-7.  Masahiro Tanaka started for the Yankees and pitched terrible.  The Yankees bullpen was great and their offense was led by Brett Gardner once again who had three hits. 

Tanaka pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and eight runs with a walk and three strikeouts.  Tanaka lost his second game of the season.  Giovanny Gallegos made his major-league debut and pitched three innings giving up a hit and an unearned run with a walk and three strikeouts, Chasen Shreve pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings with a strikeout and Tommy Layne pitched 1 2/3 perfect inning with two strikeouts.  Dellin Betances came into the game to get some work in and gave up two hits and an unearned run in 1/3 of an inning. 

Charlie Morton started for the Astros and pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up four hits and four runs with four walks and ten strikeouts.  He earned his fifth win of the season.  Michael Feliz pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and he struck out four, Brad Peacock pitched an inning giving up a hit and he walked one and Dayan Diaz pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and three runs with two of them being earned.  He struck out two batters and Ken Giles pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and he walked one. 

Gardner had three hits and an RBI, Gary Sanchez had two hits and drew a walk and Matt Holliday had a hit and three RBI.  Starlin Castro had a hit and an RBI, Aaron Judge had a hit and Didi Gregorius drew a walk.  Aaron Hicks had a hit and drew a walk, Chris Carter drew a walk and Ronald Torreyes had a hit.  Gardner and Sanchez each hit a double and Holliday hit a homerun and the Yankees were 5-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Sanchez committed an error and had a passed ball. 

George Springer had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk, Josh Reddick had a hit and an RBI and Jose Altuve had a hit.  Carlos Correa had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Carlos Beltran had two hits and an RBI and Yuli Gurriel had a hit.  Alex Bregman had a hit and four RBI, Beltran hit a double and Springer hit two homeruns.  Reddick and Bregman each hit a homerun and the Astros were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Marisnick committed an error. 

Springer hit a solo homerun in the fifth Gardner hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 9-1.  Holliday hit a three-run homerun making it 9-4.  In the ninth a passed ball made it 10-4 Astros and in the bottom half a wild pitch made it a 10-5 game.  Castro hit an RBI single cutting the lead to 10-6 and Judge hit an RBI single to make it 10-7.  The Yankees did have the tying run to the plate but that would be the final score. 

The Yankees lost three of four in the series to the Astros and will have a day off on Monday.  They will then begin a three game series in Kansas City on Tuesday night against the Royals.

The New York Yankees offense explodes in rout of the Houston Astros



The New York Yankees defeated the Houston Astros on Wednesday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 16-6.  Michael Pineda started for the Yankees and did not pitch very well, Ivan Nova pitched very well in relief.  Starlin Castro had four hits and five RBI and Mark Teixeira had four RBI to lead the offense. 

Pineda pitched five innings giving up eight hits and six runs with no walks and five strikeouts.  He earned his first win of the season.  Nova pitched four shutout innings giving up four hits and a walk with five strikeouts and earned his first save of the season. 

Collin McHugh started for the Astros and pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and six runs with five of them being earned.  He walked two and didn't strike out any batters.  Michael Feliz pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and six runs with four walks and four strikeouts, Tony Sipp pitched an inning giving up three hits and a run with a walk and two strikeouts and Josh Fields pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up four hits and three runs and he struck out one.  Pat Neshek pitched a perfect inning. 

Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit, Brett Gardner drew four walks and Alex Rodriguez drew two walks.  Teixeira had two hits and four RBI, Brian McCann had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk and Carlos Beltran had two hits and two RBI.  Aaron Hicks had a hit, Chase Headley had a hit and an RBI and Ronald Torreyes had a hit and two RBI.  Castro had four hits and five RBI, Didi Gregorius had three hits and McCann and Castro each hit a double.  Torreyes hit a triple and Castro, Teixeira and Beltran each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 9-16 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Headley and Ellsbury each had a stolen base. 

Jose Altuve had a hit, George Springer had a hit, four RBI and drew a walk and Carlos Correa had four hits and two RBI.  Colby Rasmus had two hits, Luis Valbuena had a hit and Tyler White had two hits.  Preston Tucker had a hit and Rasmus, Tucker and White each hit a double.  Correa hit two homeruns and Springer hit a homerun.  The Astros were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Castro committed an error. 

In the first Correa hit a solo homerun to give the Astros a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the first Teixeira hit an RBI single, McCann hit a two run double, Beltran hit an RBI groundout, Headley hit an RBI single and Castro hit an RBI single to make it 6-1 Yankees.  In the second Springer hit a grand slam to cut the lead to 6-5 Yankees.  In the second Castro hit a three run homerun to push the Yankees lead to 9-5.  In the third Teixeira hit a three run homerun to give the Yankees a 12-5 lead.  In the fifth Correa hit a solo homerun to make it 12-6.  In the sixth Beltran hit a solo homerun and in the seventh Torreyes hit a two run triple to make it 15-6 Yankees.  Castro hit an RBI single making it 16-6 Yankees and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series on Thursday afternoon.  The Yankees will then head to Detroit for three games and Toronto for three before returning home for a long homestand.
