New York Yankees notes

The Yankees plan on playing Carlos Beltran on Friday in right field which will be his spring debut.  Alex Rodriguez will take the day off tomorrow, he will get his work in back in Tampa and then play again on Friday in another home game.  He said he was surprised he got a hit in his first at bat, that he was nervous but it was good to be back out there and hear some cheers.

Brendan Ryan had the day off.  He felt a little sore after the workout yesterday but said he felt good during it.  He is optimistic that he will be on the field soon.  He doesn't expect to play before next week.  Masahiro Tanaka threw a bullpen today and came through it fine.  He will make his first start sometime next week but will have a simulated game before that.

Scott Baker will start on Saturday for the Yankees.  Girardi said he doesn't have a pitcher to announce after Saturday.  Esmil Rogers starts tomorrow and Chris Capuano and Bryan Mitchell will each pitch on Friday in the split squad game.

Stephen Drew made an error today but he said he is still learning second base and he is happy to just get in a groove again and have a normal spring training.  He said he considers himself a second baseman and doesn't want any reps at shortstop.  it seems that he will be the starter with Gregorius at short and Ryan as the backup for now.  It is looking more and more like Rob Refsnyder and Jose Pirela will be back in AAA but that could change.

Nathan Eovaldi impressed the Yankees today and even some scouts according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News.  He said he felt good and used some splitters that he has been working on.  He also is trying to pitch up in the zone more even if it is just to change the eye level of the batter.

Rodriguez said he could play the field whenever Joe Girardi wants.  He said he had some good work in the back fields today and that he is ready whenever Girardi is ready for him to take the field.

New York Mets weekend notes

The big news of the weekend would have to be that Jon Niese left Sunday's start with left elbow

discomfort.  He had been bothered by shoulder soreness earlier in the spring.  He is heading back to

NY for an MRI.  This is what he said though "It's the back of the elbow, which is good.  I'm almost

100 percent sure it's nothing serious like Tommy John or anything.  It's just a little discomfort .  I

wanted to go back out there.  It's something that I could definitely pitch through."

The Mets are considering putting Rafael Montero in their bullpen and having him break camp with the team.  He is not being considered to replace Niese.  Jennry Mejia and John Lannan are considered the front runners to take Niese spot in the rotation if need be.  Mejia, Lannan and Matsuzaka are competing for the fifth spot in the rotation.

Ike Davis and Lucas Duda got at-bats in a minor league intrasquad game on Saturday.  It was at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie.  The Mets are hoping to have Duda in a major league game by Monday or Tuesday.  Stephen Drew is still out there and Boras says that he and the Mets have talked but he is still looking for a multi-year deal and the Mets are only looking at one year.  I think the Mets should just sign him for two or three years.  They can say it will be less then what he would get for one year.  What do they have to lose, it will look good for them and bolster their shortstop position.

New York Mets spring training notes

New York Mets spring training notes

The Mets as always are getting criticism right now. They signed Chris Young to a one year 7.5 million deal in November. Nelson Cruz just signed with Baltimore for one year and eight million. There were a lot of Mets fans that wanted him and I can see their frustration. They didn’t know in November though that Cruz would come down, he was looking for a five-year deal at the time.

Terry Collins the manager said on Saturday that he liked Ike Davis swing. He believes it is more quite and flat, which creates better backspin on the ball. He said this “I’m really impressed with what I’ve seen.” He went on to say that his swing is completely different then last year. Ike Davis had a tough year and then went through a winter of being in constant trade rumors. He is still a Met and maybe that is a good thing. If he just focuses on baseball and gets it back he will be a valuable asset to the Mets. If he does well they may be able to trade Lucas Duda and Davis can be the first baseman for a long time and help anchor the infield.

Matt Harvey tossed a baseball for the first time since his surgery on Saturday. It doesn’t mean much as there is no way he will be playing this year but good to see for them. He made about 20 throws to the bullpen catcher. He was roughly standing 60 feet away and was being watched by many fans, media and cameras. Harvey told reporters “It was awesome. Everything felt amazing; I’ve got a lot of work to do. It’s going to be a tough process with how things felt today. But I’ve got to stick with it and move forward.”

The Mets catchers have been told to not block home plate regardless of the new rules or not. The Mets offered Stephen Drew a one year 9.5 million dollar deal but he is still looking for more. Maybe they can agree to that with an option, I don’t know what other options he really has at this point.
