The New York Yankees were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday afternoon.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 6-1.  Vidal Nuno started and didn't pitch well again.  Jose Ramirez pitched well in relief and Brian Roberts had a couple of hits.

Nuno pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up six hits and five runs with four earned.  He walked two and struck out four and lost his fourth game of the season.  Ramirez pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up three hits and a run with a walk and four strikeouts.

Bud Norris pitched five innings giving up three hits and a run with two walks and four strikeouts and earned his seventh win of the season.  Webb pitched two innings giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout, Brian Matusz pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and struck out one and Tommy Hunter pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit.

Brett Gardner drew a walk, Derek Jeter had a hit and Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and drew a walk.  Mark Teixeira had a hit and an RBI, Carlos Beltran drew a walk and Roberts had two hits.  Ichiro Suzuki had a hit, Francisco Cervelli had a hit and Roberts hit a double.  Teixeira hit a homerun and the Yankees were 0-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Gardner was caught stealing and Johnson committed an error.

Steve Pearce had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk, Adam Jones had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and Nelson Cruz had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk.  Chris Davis had a hit, J.J. Hardy had two hits and an RBI and Jonathan Schoop had a hit.  Davis hit a double, Jones, Cruz, Pearce and Hardy each hit a homerun.  The Orioles were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.

Jose Reyes closer to returning

The New York Mets defeated the Florida Marlins by the score of 7-6 today. They also got good news when Jose Reyes took live batting practice and looked good. He is likely to run the bases next and then play in a minor league game. The Mets won't say if he will be ready for opening day or not, I am not sure if they really know. Jon Niese got the start and pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up 6 hits and 4 runs, 3 of them were earned. He had 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.Bobby Parnell pitched 1 inning giving up 2 hits and 1 run. Jenrry Mejia pitched a inning giving up a hit and a run, Pedro Feliciano pitched a inning giving up a hit and 0 runs with 2 strikeouts. Fernando Nieve pitched a inning giving up a hit and 0 runs with a strikeout. Pedro Feliciano wants to be the 8th inning guy but he is too valuable as a lefty specialist. Jeff Francoeur led the offense with 3 hits, Daniel Murphy had 2 hits. Angel Pagan had a hit and rbi, Gary Matthews Jr. had a hit, rbi and walk. Henry Blanco had 2 hits and 2 rbi, Ruben Tejada had 2 hits a rbi and walk. The team will have information about the final pitching staff on Thursday. Pedro Feliciano said after the game that he feels he will get the job as the setup man, that he isn't comfortable being just a lefty specialist. Johan Santana will pitch in a minor league game tomorrow.

Yankees take game with late heroics

The New York Yankees won a tough game tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5. Joba Chamberlain got the start and went 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Brian Bruney pitched a scorless seventh with a strikeout and Phil Coke got 2 outs in the 8th and then David Robertson got the last out before Mariano Rivera converted his 29th straight save. Joba wasn't great but he wasn't terrible either he just has to get more consistant and that is part of learning to be a pitcher, he is still 23 years old and everyone has to remember that. The offense started off with a bang and then looked flat for a few innings before striking in the 8th to score 3 runs, Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada hit back to back solo homeruns and then Johnny Damon added a rbi single and so did Melky Cabrera. Damon had 2 other hits and Derek Jeter went 3 for 5 also. Mark Teixeira had a hit, walk and rbi, A-rod had a walk and Jorge Posada also had another hit and rbi other then the homerun. Robinson Cano had 2 hits and Eric Hinske and Melky Cabrera had 1 and Melky had 2 rbi's. The Yankees will try and take the series tomorrow in a matinee game with A.J. Burnett taking on Ricky Romero before they head out to Seattle for 4 games.

Yankees finish off strong homstand with a win

The Yankees defeated the Oakland A's today by the score of 7-5 to cap off a 9-1 homestand. Sergio Mitre got the start and only lasted 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 9 hits with 1 strikeout. Phil Coke came on in relief and was shaky giving up 2 hits and a run in his one inning of work. Phil Coke has been so great but it is going to happen and it will really be beneficial to him and the team if Damaso Marte comes back and they can have the two lefties out of the pen. Phil Hughes came on for 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He gave up a hit and a walk but had 3 strikeouts. He has just been so good you wonder if he will ever let up a run again out of the bullpen. Mariano Rivera also pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief giving up 0 hits and 0 walks with 2 strikeouts. The Yankees pitching has been so good and that is the key to their success, it will be interesting to see what they do, if they add another starter or take Aceves out of the pen and make him a starter again, I don't think they will move Hughes back as he has been so dominant and it would take him time to build back up to starting. The offense was led by Derek Jeter who went 2-4 with 2 rbi's and a walk. Johnny Damon had a hit and a walk and Big Tex had 2 hits and a rbi. Jorge Posada had a hit and a walk, Hideki Matsui had a hit, walk and rbi. Nick Swisher had a hit and a walk and Robinson Cano had a huge 3 run double. Melky Cabrera had a hit and 2 walks, he has started hitting well again lately and he is once again the CF as Gardner is hurt so this is a good sign. Cody Ransom had 2 hits, everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. The Yankees finished off the homestand at 9-1 which is great and they also are 2 1/2 ahead of the Red Sox as they got that game back they lost yesterday with their win and Bostons loss. The Yankees now begin a huge 9 game roadtrip with 3 in Tampa starting tomorrow, 4 in Chicago and 2 in Toronto. The Yankees will have the Red Sox for 4 games when they return home but lets focus on each series first and not look ahead, hopefully we will remain in first at the end of this roadtrip and go from there. I would accept 5-4 on this roadtrip but 6-3 would be really nice.

New York Mets recap

The New York Mets defeated the Florida Marlins tonight by a score of 8-4. Livan Hernandez pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up 6 hits and 2 runs with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. Pedro Feliciano got the one hitter out he faced. Darren O'Day didn't fare so well 1 1/3 inning giving up 3 hits and 2 runs. Frankie Rodriguez pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit with a strikeout. Jose Reyes was 2 for 5 with 3 rbi, Daniel Murphy was 1 for 4 with a walk. David Wright was 1 for 5 with a rbi. Carlos Delgado was 3 for 4 with 2 rbi and a walk. Luis Castillo was 4 for 4 with a rbi. The Mets will go for the series win tomorrow with Johan Santana going against Josh Johnson. I am sure the Mets are feeling confident with their ace on the mound.

Mets recap and notes

I am not trying to neglect the Mets but just have forgotten to write about them. The Mets defeated the Florida Marlins yesterday 5-4. After the game Jerry Manuel still wouldn't commit to anyone as the fifth starter even though we assume its Livan Hernandez, he said he likes the kid Gee. It appears Jose Reyes will be the leadoff hitter followed by Luis Castillo, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado. I think this is the right choice, if you hit Castillo 8th it would hurt him I believe. He has looked good this spring so maybe the Mets will actually get something out of him. Mike Pelfrey got the start for the Mets today against the Orioles but because of a long rain delay only threw 13 pitches and then they didn't bring him back out after the delay. He will pitch 90-95 pitches on Thursday. The Mets were defeated 5-1 on a rainy, muddy day. Brian Stokes pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up 2 hits and 2 walks with 0 runs. Sean Green pitched an inning giving up 1 hit, 1 run with 1 strikeout. Casey Fossum pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up 6 hits, 3 runs with 2 strikeouts. The offense didn't do much but was led by Ryan Church who was 2-4 with a rbi, Marlon Anderson was 1-4. Jeremy Reed was 1-2 with 2 walks, Nick Evans was 1-3 with a walk. Brian Schneider was 1-3. The Mets will play Baltimore again tomorrow night at home and it will be on SNY.

Yankees minor league stats and notes

Ian Kennedy pitched well and was happy with his curveball which he is working on locating at the bottom of the strikezone and has been working on it all week. He allowed 6 hits with 5 of them singles, and three were to the first three batters he faced. He finished going 5 1/3 innings, 1 run with 1 walk and 2k. Kanekoa Texeira pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits and 1 run which wasn't earned with 1 walk and strikeout. Steven Jackson pitched 2 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 run which wasn't earned and had 3 strikeouts. The offense had Kevin Russo going 2-3 with a walk and rbi, Austin Jackson was 1-2 with a walk. David Williams was 2-2 with a rbi, I believe he is out of Rutgers University in NJ. Eric Duncan was 3-4 with a hr and 3rbi. Francisco Cervelli threw out a guy at second, he could be a backup catcher in the future, the Yankees really seem to be stocked at catcher with him Austin Romine and Jesus Montero leading the pack. Alan Horne who was one of the Yankees top pitching prospects last year before he got hurt threw what was basically a simulated game today throwing 40 pitches. He said his command was better today and that he is working on consistency with his fastball command. He said tonight that he would be pitching in a real game on Sunday, if everything goes well he could be back at AAA at some point this year and knocking on the door to the big leagues. Most of these notes are via Chad Jennings who covers the AAA Yankees and does a great job there and with his blog which you can locate on my link list to the right on the blog.

Recap of todays Yankees action

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Detroit Tigers today by a score of 7-4. CC Sabathia started and gave up 5 runs on 6 hits in 1 2/3 innings. He also had 1 walk, I wouldn't get too excited either way with CC, he feels fine and is just getting his work in, he hasn't developed his cutter yet and he is a veteran that knows what it takes to be ready when it counts. Alfredo Aceves vying to be the long reliever pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up 3 hits and 2 runs with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Brian Bruney pitched a perfect inning with 2 k's and Veras did the same. Mark Melancon continued to impress with 1 inning of scoreless pitching giving up 1 hit. In the spring so far he has pitched 5 innings giving up 3 hits, 1 run but unearned, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. I don't know if he is doing enough to make the team out of spring training but I am confident he will be with the Yankees at some point this season. On the offensive side Melky Cabrera was 0-3 with a walk, Johnny Damon was 2-2 with a walk. Big Tex was 2-3 with a walk and rbi and Cody Ransom was 1-3 but did have an error. The Yankees get their first off day of the spring tomorrow and will be back at it on Friday. Edwar Ramirez threw BP today and will pitch on Saturday, MO also threw BP will do so again on Saturday should be in a game on Monday and will go from there, he will be ready come opening day.
