The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 8-4 on Sunday afternoon. The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing,New York. Jon Niese started for the Mets and pitched ok but not great. The Mets offense managed seven hits but not one batter had more then one. The bullpen used five pitchers and two of them had rough outings. Cole Hamels pitched pretty well for the Phillies. Ty Wigginton led the Phillies offense.
Niese pitched five innings giving up two hits and four runs with five walks and seven strikeouts. Ramon Ramirez pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts, Bobby Parnell took the loss pitching an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout and Jon Rauch pitched an inning giving up a hit. Manny Acosta pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up four hits and three runs with a strikeout and Jack Egbert pitched 2/3 of an inning retiring both batters. Hamels got his eighth win of the season pitching eight innings and giving up seven hits and four runs with a walk and six strikeouts. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.
Justin Turner had a hit, Kurt Nieuwenhuis had a hit and Daniel Murphy had a hit. Scott Hairston had a hit and two RBI, Lucas Duda drew a walk and Vinny Rottino had a hit and two RBI. Rob Johnson and Andres Torres had a hit. Torres had a double, Rottino and Hairston each hit a homerun. The Mets were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and they left two men on base. Murphy and Wright each committed an error.
Jimmy Rollins had a hit, Placido Polanco had a hit and Hunter Pence had a hit and drew two walks. Shane Victorino drew a walk, Wigginton had three hits, six RBI and drew two walks and John Mayberry had two hits and two RBI. Brian Schneider drew a walk and Hamels had a hit. Wigginton had a double and a homerun and Mayberry also hit a homerun. The Phillies were 3-9 with runners in scoring position and they left nine men on base. Pence had an outfield assist.
In the third Wigginton hit a two run double to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. In the fifth Rottino hit a two run homerun to tie the game at two. Mayberry hit a two run homerun in the sixth to give the Phillies a 4-2 lead. Hairston hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at four. Wigginton hit an RBI single in the seventh to make it 5-4 Phillies. Wigginton hit a three run homerun in the ninth to make it 8-4 and that would be the final score.
The Mets saw their record drop to 27-22. The Phillies improved their record to 26-24. The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Tuesday night.

The New York Mets take the series from the Padres with another shutout
The New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres by the score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The game took place in Flushing,NY. It was banner day as the Mets brought it back for the first time since 1996. The Mets got a great start out of R.A. Dickey who followed a great start by Johan Santana on Saturday afternoon. The Mets offense was led by Justin Turner. Edison Volquez started for the Padres and pitched ok and their bullpen did a good job. Their offense only managed three hits, one was a double.
Dickey pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up no runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out ten and earned his seventh win of the season. Tim Byrdak pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one and Frank Francisco picked up his 13th save of the season pitching a perfect inning. Volquez pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up five hits and two runs with three walks and five strikeouts. Volquez suffered his fifth loss of the season, Brad Brach pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings striking out one and Andrew Cashner pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Mike Baxter had a hit, David Wright drew a walk and Lucas Duda drew a walk. Daniel Murphy had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Turner had two hits and Dickey had a hit. Turner had a double and the Mets were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Wright and Murphy each had a stolen base. Nickeas had a passed ball and Duda had an outfield assist.

The Yankees sweep the Oakland Athletics and win their fifth straight
The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics by the score of 2-0 on Sunday evening. The game was played in Oakland, California. The Yankees got a strong start out of Hiroki Kuroda and Rafael Soriano closed it out. Mark Teixeira had another good offensive day as he has broken out of his slump. Derek Jeter had another day where he passed another legend on the all-time hits list. Tommy Milone started for the Athletics and pitched well. The A’s couldn’t get anything going offensively though.
Kuroda pitched eight shutout innings giving up four hits and one walk. He struck out three batters and picked up his fourth win of the season. Soriano picked up his fifth save of the season and is perfect since taking over the role. He gave up a hit and struck out two in his one inning of work. Soriano became the first Yankees closer other than Mariano Rivera to record at least four straight saves since 1997. Milone picked up his fourth loss of the season. He pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up eight hits and two runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Cook retired the only batter he faced, Grant Balfour pitched a perfect inning striking out one and Brian Fuentes pitched a perfect inning striking out one.

The Yankees win their fourth straight as their offense stays hot
The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics by the score of 9-2 on Saturday evening. CC Sabathia started for the Yankees and didn’t have his best command but pitched well enough to win the game. Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano carried the offense with a combined seven hits. Bartolo Colon started for the Athletics and didn’t pitch very well. Cowgill led the Athletics offense.
Sabathia gave up seven hits and two runs in seven innings. He walked two and struck out four and earned his sixth win of the season. Cory Wade pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts and Cody Eppley pitched an inning giving up a walk. Colon lost his fifth game of the season pitching six innings and giving up nine hits and six runs. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out three. Jordan Norberto pitched an inning giving up two walks and Godfrey pitched two innings giving up five hits and three runs with two of them being earned. He did strike out a batter.

The Mets beat up on the San Diego Padres
The New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres by the score of 9-0 on Saturday afternoon. It was a hot and humid day, picture perfect for baseball though. The game was played at Citi Field in Flushing,NY. I was in attendance and had a good view of all the action. Johan Santana pitched for the Mets and was simply brilliant. The Mets offense got three homeruns, they had a big first inning and a big eighth inning which was their final inning.
Santana pitched nine innings giving up no runs on four hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven. It was the second win of the season for Santana. Santana must of felt like it was Christmas as he very rarely gets run support. Clayton Richard started for the Padres and pitched six innings giving up five hits and four runs with three walks. He struck out five batters and took his sixth loss of the season. Matt Palmer pitched a scoreless inning giving up a walk and striking out one and Dale Thayer pitched an inning giving up four hits and five runs with a walk and a strikeout.
