The New York Mets defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2

The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 3-2 on Monday afternoon. The game took place at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. Matt Harvey started for the Mets and pitched well and Travis d’Arnaud and Lucas Duda had good days to lead the Mets offense. 
Harvey pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up six hits and two runs with a walk and six strikeouts. Josh Edgin picked up the win pitching to two batters and retiring them both, LaTroy Hawkins pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one and Scott Atchison pitched an inning giving up a hit and walking one. Bobby Parnell picked up the save pitching an inning giving up a hit.

d’Arnaud had two hits, Duda had a hit and two RBI and Andrew Brown had a hit and an RBI. Zach Lutz had a hit, Omar Quintanilla had a hit and drew a walk and d’Arnaud hit a double. Duda hit a homerun and the Mets were 1-2 with runners in scoring position and left two men on base. Lutz committed an error and Valdespin had an outfield assist.

Jake Westbrook pitched six innings for the Cardinals. He gave up three hits and two runs and struck out four, Marc Rzepczynski took the loss pitching an inning giving up three hits and a run with a strikeout, Edward Mujica pitched an inning giving up a walk and striking out one and Jason Motte pitched a perfect inning.

Matt Carpenter had a hit and drew two walks, Matt Holliday had a hit and Matt Adams had a hit and an RBI. Oscar Taveras had two hits and an RBI, Daniel Descalso had a hit and Adron Chambers had a hit. Ronny Cedeno had two hits, Holliday and Adams each hit a double and the Cardinals were 2-4 with runners in scoring position. The Cardinals left five men on base, Adams committed an error and Taveras had an outfield assist.

Duda hit a two run homerun in the fourth to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at two. Adams hit an RBI double and Taveras hit an RBI single. Brown hit an RBI single in the seventh to give the Mets a 3-2 lead and that was the final score.

The Mets record improved to 8-10 on the spring and the Cardinals record dropped to 10-11. The Mets will have the day off on Tuesday and the Cardinals will host the Miami Marlins.

The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 2-1

The New York Mets were defeated by the Atlanta Braves by the score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The game took place at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Jon Niese started for the Mets and pitched well, he looks to be in line to be the Opening day starter. Jordany Valdespin had a good day to lead the Mets offense which didn’t do much at all. 
Niese pitched five innings giving up two hits and one runs with a walk and four strikeouts. Scott Rice picked up the loss pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout, Brandon Lyon pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out two and Pedro Feliciano pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit. Robert Carson pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and striking out one and Bobby Parnell pitched 2/3 of an inning and retired both hitters that he faced.

Valdespin had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Brandon Hicks drew a walk and Ike Davis had a hit. Daniel Muno drew a walk, Zach Lutz drew a walk and Davis hit a double. Valdespin hit a homerun and the Mets were 0-2 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.

Julio Teheran picked up the win pitching six innings giving up three hits and a run with two walks and seven strikeouts. Luis Avilan pitched a perfect inning, Dusty Hughes pitched an inning giving up a walk and Anthony Varvaro pitched an inning giving up a walk and striking out one.

Jordan Schafer had a hit, Freddie Freeman had a hit and an RBI and Chris Johnson had three hits and an RBI. Jordan Parraz had a hit, Ramiro Pena had a hit and drew a walk and Juan Francisco had a hit. Johnson hit a homerun and the Braves were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Schafer had a stolen base.

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Valdespin hit a solo homerun, the Braves scored a single run in the fourth and sixth inning. Johnson hit a solo homerun in the fourth and in the sixth Freeman hit an RBI single to make it 2-1 and that was the final score.

The Mets record fell to 7-10 on the spring and the Braves record improved to 13-11. The Mets will play at the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday afternoon.

The New York Yankees defeat the PIttsburgh Pirates 11-9

The New York Yankees defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 11-9 on Sunday afternoon. The game took place at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Florida. Ivan Nova made the start and had his worst start of the spring although he was ok for five innings. Kevin Youkilis, Brennan Boesche and Eduardo Nunez each had a couple of hits. 
Nova pitched five innings giving up six hits and four runs with a walk and four strikeouts. Nova picked up the win, Dave Robertson pitched an inning giving up a walk and striking out one, Branden Pinder pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a walk and Matt Tracy pitched an inning giving up five hits and four runs and a walk. Chase Whitley picked up the save pitching a perfect inning.

Nunez had two hits, Boesch had two hits and an RBI and Youkilis had two hits and three RBI. Gil Velazquez had a hit, Jayson Nix drew two walks and Chris Stewart had a hit and drew a walk. Addison Maruszak had a hit and an RBI, Thomas Neal drew a walk and Dan Johnson drew a walk. Melky Mesa had a hit and four RBI, Youkilis hit a double and a homerun and Mesa hit a homerun. The Yankees were 5-12 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Nunez had two stolen bases, Neal, Mesa and Boesch each had one. Stewart had a passed ball and Mesa had an outfield assist.

Phil Irwin took the loss pitching 2 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and six runs with two walks. Mike Zagurski pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and two runs with two walks and a strikeout, Jeff Locke pitched four innings giving up two unearned runs and a walk with two strikeouts and Jared Hughes pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with two strikeouts.

Starling Marte had a hit, Felix Pie had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Russell Martin drew a walk. Lucas May had two hits and two RBI, Alex Presley had a hit and an RBI and Pedro Alvarez had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk. Jared Goedert had an RBI, Matt Curry drew a walk and Gaby Sanchez had a hit and an RBI. Travis Snider had a hit and an RBI, Ivan De Jesus had a hit and Clint Barmes had a hit and an RBI. Jordy Mercer had a hit, Alvarez hit two doubles, Sanchez and Presley each hit a double. Barmes hit a homerun and the Pirates were 5-10 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Pie had a stolen base, Martin and Alvarez each committed an error and May had a passed ball.

The Yankees scored three runs in the first inning. Nunez stole third and scored on a throwing error and then Youkilis hit a two run homerun. In the second Youkilis hit an RBI double to make it a 4-0 game. The Yankees scored four runs in the third and it was a 8-0 Yankees lead. Mesa hit a grand slam. The Pirates would get on the board in the fourth with three runs. Alvarez and Sanchez each hit an RBI double and Snider hit a sacrifice fly. The Yankees had an 8-3 lead and then the Pirates cut it in half in the fifth inning. The Yankees got that run back in the sixth inning. It was 9-5 in the seventh. The Yankees made it a 10-5 game in the eighth and 11-5 in the ninth and then the Pirates rallied four four runs in the ninth. Pie hit an RBI single, May hit an RBI single and Presley hit an RBI double. Goedert had an RBI groundout and that was the final run of the game making it a 11-9 game.

The Yankees record improved to 9-14 and the Pirates record fell to 9-13. The Yankees will have an off day on Monday and the Pirates will host the Boston Red Sox.

The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 4-2

The New York Mets were defeated by the Miami Marlins by the score of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. The game took place at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Shaun Marcum started for the Mets and pitched ok. The Mets offense managed five hits but no one had more then one. 
Marcum pitched four innings giving up five hits and two runs with a walk and he took the loss. Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect inning, Pedro Feliciano pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts and Greg Burke pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one. Jeurys Familia pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with three walks and two strikeouts and Dylan Owen faced two batters and retired them both.

Henderson Alvarez pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up three hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout. He got the win, Kevin Slowey pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with two walks and four strikeouts and Mike Dunn pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts.

Mike Baxter had a hit and drew a walk, Justin Turner had a hit and Ike Davis had a hit and drew a walk. Marlon Byrd had a hit, Lucas Duda had an RBI and Travis d’Arnaud had a hit and drew a walk. Omar Quintanilla had an RBI, Byrd and D’arnaud hit a double. The Mets were 0-7 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Baxter had a stolen base and Turner committed an error.

Chone Figgins had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Placido Polanco had two hits and Justin Ruggiano had a hit. Christian Yelich had a hit and an RBI, Chris Coghlan had two hits and an RBI and Donovan Solano had an RBI. Casey Kotchman had two hits and drew a walk, Kevin Kouzmanoff drew a walk and Bryan Peterson drew a walk. Polanco and Kotchman each hit a double, Coghlan hit a triple and Yelich hit a homerun. The Marlins were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Petersen was caught stealing.

In the fourth Coghlan hit an RBI triple and Solano hit an RBI groundout to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead. Duda hit an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 2-1. Figgins hit an RBI single in the seventh to give the Marlins a 3-1 lead and the Mets answered right back to make it 3-2. Quintanilla had an RBI groundout. The Marlins scored the final run of the game in the eighth. Yelich hit a solo homerun and the final score was 4-2 Marlins.

The Mets record dropped to 7-9 on the spring and the Marlins improved to 8-10. The Mets will host the Atlanta Braves on Sunday afternoon and the Marlins will host the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.

The New York Yankees drop both ends of a split squad

The New York Yankees were defeated by the score of 7-0 by the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday afternoon. They lost to the Atlanta Braves 4-0 on Saturday evening. David Phelps started the night game and felt like he had his best stuff of the spring, the results weren’t great though. Hiroki Kuroda pitched the day game and pitched six effective innings. The Yankees offense didn’t do much, Derek Jeter and Kevin Youkilis each had a hit in the day game. Eduardo Nunez had a hit and and a walk in the night game, they only managed three hits. 
Kuroda pitched six innings giving up four runs but only two were earned on six hits. He walked one and struck out two and he took the loss his second of the spring. Mariano Rivera pitched an inning giving up a walk and he struck out one, David Aardsma pitched an inning giving up a walk and striking out one and Shawn Kelley pitched an inning giving up four hits and three runs. Phelps pitched the night game going five innings giving up seven hits and four runs with a walk and six strikeouts. Preston Claiborne pitched a perfect inning, Tom Kahnle pitched an inning giving up a walk and Jeremy Bleich pitched to one batter and retired him. Jim Miller pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk and striking out one.

In the day game Jeter had a hit, Walter Ibarra had two hits and Youkilis had a hit. Luke Murton had a hit, Eduardo Sosa drew a walk and Brett Gardner had a hit. Ramon Flores and Chris Stewart each drew a walk and Gil Velazquez had a hit. Jeter and Youkilis each hit a double and the Yankees were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.

In the night game they only managed three hits, Nunez had a hit and drew a walk and Matt Diaz and Dan Johnson each had a hit. The Yankees left three men on base, Mesa and Nix each committed an error. The Yankees record is now 8-14 on the spring and they will play Sunday afternoon at the Pittsburgh Pirates.
