The New York Mets rally in the ninth and win in extra innings



The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 5-4.  Jon Niese started and pitched pretty well and the bullpen was pretty good also.  Eric Young Jr. and Daniel Murphy each had three hits to lead the offense. 

Niese pitched six innings giving up eight hits and three runs.  He walked one and struck out six.  Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched two innings giving up two walks and striking out two, Jose Valverde pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two walks and a strikeout and Jeurys Familia pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a walk and striking out one.  Scott Rice picked up his first win facing one batter and retiring him. 

Cole Hamels pitched seven innings giving up seven hits and one run with three walks and ten strikeouts.  Mario Hollands pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout, Antonio Bastardo pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and three runs with a strikeout and Roberto Hernandez pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and striking out one.  Jeff Manship lost his first game of the season pitching 1 1/3 innings and giving up four hits and a run with two walks. 

Young Jr. had three hits, Daniel Murphy had three hits, two RBI and drew two walks and David Wright had a hit and an RBI.  Chris Young had two hits, Eric Campbell had a hit and drew a walk and Bobby Abreu had a hit.  Juan Lagares had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Anthony Recker had two hits and Ruben Tejada had two hits, an RBI and drew two walks.  Murphy hit two doubles, Tejada, Young Jr. and Young each hit a double.  Murphy hit a homerun and the Mets were 5-20 with runners in scoring position and left 17 men on base.  Young Jr. had two stolen bases. 

Jimmy Rollins had a hit and drew three walks, Chase Utley had a hit and an RBI and Ryan Howard had a hit and drew a walk.  Marlon Byrd had two hits and drew a walk, Dominic Brown had an RBI and Wil Nieves had two hits and an RBI. Cody Asche had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Rollins, Nieves, Asche and Byrd each hit a double.  Utley hit a triple and the Phillies were 1-11 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.  Nieves had a stolen base and committed an error. 

In the first Wright hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the second the Phillies tied the game at one on a Asche RBI double.  In the fourth Brown reached on a fielder's choice scoring a run and Nieves had an RBI groundout.  The Phillies took a 3-1 lead and then added to that in the ninth on a Utley RBI triple.  The Phillies were going for the sweep and the 4-1 lead but the Mets scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at four.  Murphy hit a two run homerun and Lagares had an RBI groundout.  In the 11th Tejada hit an RBI single giving the Mets a 5-4 walk-off win.  The Mets were able to salvage the final game of the series and end their five game losing streak.  The Mets will open up a two game series with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Monday night.
