The New York Yankees fall to the Tampa Bay Rays in extra innings


The New York Yankees fall in extras to the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 10-5.  Vidal Nuno started and wasn't great, the bullpen was very good until Chris Leroux.  Jacoby Ellsbury led the offense with four hits, Brian Roberts and Alfonso  Soriano each had three hits.  The offense blew many chances though in extras to score the winning run. 

Nuno pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up five hits and four runs.  He walked three and struck out two.  Dellin Betances pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and had three strikeouts, Preston Claiborne pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two walks and had a strikeout and Matt Thornton pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit.  David Robertson pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout, Shawn Kelley pitched two innings giving up a hit and struck out three and Adam Warren pitched two innings giving up four hits and had two strikeouts.  Leroux had his first loss pitching an inning and giving up five hits and five runs with two walks and two strikeouts. 

David Price pitched seven innings giving up eight hits and two runs.  He struck out eight.  Joel Peralta pitched an inning giving up three hits and three runs, Oviedo pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Brandon Gomes pitched two innings giving up a hit.  Heath Bell won his first game pitching 2 1/3 innings and giving up four hits and a walk.  Josh Lueke pitched an inning and gave up a hit. 

Ellsbury had four hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Carlos Beltran had two hits and Mark Teixeira had two hits and an RBI.  Alfonso Soriano had three hits and an RBI, Brian McCann had two hits and two RBI and Brian Roberts had three hits.  Yangervis Solarte had a hit, John Ryan Murphy had a hit and Murphy hit a double.  McCann, Soriano and Teixeira each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-13 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base.  Ellsbury and Roberts each had a stolen base and Ellsbury was picked off. 

Ben Zobrist had a hit, Desmond Jennings had a hit, an RBI and drew two walks and Evan Longoria had three hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Wil Myers had three hits and two RBI, Sean Rodriguez had three hits, an RBI and drew a walk and James Loney had three hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Brandon Guyer had a hit and an RBI, Logan Forsythe had an RBI and Matt Joyce drew a walk.  Yunel Escobar had three hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Ryan Hanigan had two hits and an RBI, Rodriguez hit two doubles and Longoria hit a triple.  Jennings hit a homerun and the Rays were 7-18 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base.  Jennings had two stolen bases, Zobrist had a stolen base and Bell committed an error.  Gomes was picked off. 

In the second Loney hit an RBI single to give the Rays a 1-0 lead.  McCann hit a two run homerun to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.  Myers hit an RBI single in the fourth and Forsythe hit a sacrifice fly to give the Rays a 3-2 lead in the fourth.  In the fifth Jennings hit a solo homerun to give the Rays a 4-2 lead.  The Yankees hit back-to-back homeruns to tie the game in the eighth.  Teixeira and Soriano hit the homeruns.  In the ninth Longoria hit an RBI single to give the Rays a 5-4 lead.  Ellsbury hit an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.  In the 14th the Rays scored five runs to win the game. 

The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Saturday afternoon.
