New York Yankees lose a close back and forth game to the Tampa Bay Rays


The New York Yankees were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 5-4.  James Paxton started for the Yankees and he pitched well.  Aroldis Chapman blew the save and DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Hicks and Edwin Encarnacion each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Paxton pitched six innings giving up seven hits and two runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.  Chad Green pitched two innings giving up a hit and a walk and Chapman blew his fourth save of the season and lost his second game of the season.  He pitched an inning giving up three hits and three runs with two strikeouts. 

Blake Snell pitched five innings giving up three hits and a run with two walks and four strikeouts.  Diego Castillo pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a walk and he struck out two, Emilio Pagan pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout and Andrew Kittredge pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up three hits and two runs with a walk and two strikeouts and he won his first game of the season.  Oliver Drake pitched 1/3 of an inning striking out the only batter he faced.  Drake picked up his first save of the season. 

LeMahieu had two hits and drew a walk, Aaron Judge drew two walks and Hicks had two hits.  Encarnacion had two hits and three RBI, Gleyber Torres had a hit and drew a walk and Gio Urshela had a hit and an RBI.  Brett Gardner drew a walk, Encarnacion hit two homeruns and Urshela hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Judge had an outfield assist and Sanchez had a pickoff. 

Travis d’Arnaud had three hits and five RBI and drew two walks, Tommy Pham had a hit and Yandy Diaz had a hit.  Avisail Garcia had a hit and drew a walk, Kevin Kiermaier had two hits and Guillermo Heredia had a hit.  Willy Adames had two hits, d’Arnaud hit three homeruns and the Rays were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Pham and Adames each had a stolen base and Adames was picked off. 

In the first d’Arnaud hit a solo homerun giving the Rays a 1-0 lead.  In the third d’Arnaud hit a solo homerun to push the lead to 2-0.  IN the fourth Encarnacion hit a solo homerun cutting the lead to 2-1.  In the seventh Urshela hit a solo homerun to tie the game at two.  In the eighth Encarnacion hit a two-run homerun giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead.  In the ninth d’Arnaud hit his third homerun of the game a three-run shot to give the Rays a 5-4 lead and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of four on Tuesday night.
