New York Mets defeat the Philadelphia Phillies


The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 5-1.  Steven Matz started for the Mets and pitched well, the bullpen did their job.  Jeff McNeil and Juan Lagares each had two hits to lead the Mets offense. 

Matz won his second game of the season pitching six innings and giving up three hits and a run.  He walked two and struck out six.  Seth Lugo pitched an inning with a strikeout, Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Edwin Diaz pitched an inning with two strikeouts. 

Jake Arrieta lost his second game of the season pitching six innings and giving up seven hits and four runs with three being earned.  He walked one and struck out seven.  Jose Alvarez pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up an unearned run, Juan Nicasio pitched 2/3 of an inning with a walk and Edubray Ramos pitched an inning giving up two hits and he struck out one. 

Brandon Nimmo had a hit, McNeil had two hits and an RBI and Pete Alonso had a hit and two RBI.  Michael Conforto had an RBI and drew a walk, Wilson Ramos had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Todd Frazier had a hit.  Lagares had two hits, Dom Smith had a hit and Alonso hit a double.  McNeil hit a homerun and the Mets were 2-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Frazier and Nimmo each had a stolen base and Lagares was caught stealing. 

Rhys Hoskins had a hit and an RBI, Maikel Franco drew a walk and Cesar Hernandez had two hits.  Aaron Altherr drew a walk, Hernandez hit a double and Hoskins hit a homerun.  The Phillies were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Hernandez, Altherr and Realmuto each committed an error. 

In the third Alonso hit an RBI double and Ramos hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.  In the fourth Hoskins hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the fifth McNeil hit a solo homerun to push the Mets lead to 3-1.  In the seventh a hit by pitch and a sac fly by Conforto extended the Mets lead to 5-1 and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of three on Tuesday night. 

Yankees win a long one in 14 innings over the Anaheim Angels


The New York Yankees defeated the Anaheim Angels on Monday night.  The game took place at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California and the final score was 4-3 in 14 innings.  J.A. Happ started for the Yankees and he pitched well.  The Yankees bullpen pitched well although Aroldis Chapman blew a save and Gio Urshela led the offense with two hits and two RBI. 

Happ pitched seven innings giving up three hits and two runs with two walks and five strikeouts.  Adam Ottavino pitched two innings giving up two hits and he walked one, Tommy Khanle pitched an inning with a strikeout and Luis Cessa pitched an inning with two walks and a strikeout.  Chapman pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout and Jonathan Holder pitched two innings with a walk and three strikeouts and he won his first game of the season. 

Matt Harvey started for the Angels and he pitched six innings giving up three hits and two runs with two walks and two strikeouts.  Cam Bedrosian pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts, Luis Garcia pitched an inning with a walk and Hansel Robles pitched an inning with three strikeouts.  Taylor Cole pitched three innings giving up a hit and a run with a walk and three strikeouts and Luke Bard pitched two innings giving up a hit and an unearned run with a walk and four strikeouts.  Bard lost his first game of the season.   

Brett Gardner drew two walks, Luke Voit had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Gleyber Torres had an RBI.  Clint Frazier had a hit,Mike Ford drew two walks and Urshela had two hits and two RBI.  Kyle Higashioka had a hit which was a double and Frazier hit a double.  Voit hit a homerun and the Yankees were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Urshela and Torres each had a stolen base. 

Mike Trout had a hit and drew two walks, Andrelton Simmons drew a walk and Albert Pujols drew a walk.  Kevan Smith had two hits, Jonathan Lucroy had a hit and two RBI.  Kole Calhoun drew two walks, Zack Cozart had a hit and Brian Goodwin had two hits and an RBI.  Lucroy hit a homerun and the Angels were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Bourjos and Trout each had a stolen base. 

In the first Voit hit a solo homerun to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the second Lucroy hit a two-run homerun to give the Angels a 2-1 lead.  The Yankees tied the game up in the third on a Torres sacrifice fly and the score would remain at two until the 12th inning.  Urshela hit a sac fly to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead but in the bottom of the 12th Goodwin hit an RBI single to tie the game at three and keep the game going.  In the 14th Urshela hit an RBI single to make it 4-3 Yankees which would end up being the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of four on Tuesday night.

New York Mets drop rubber game to the St. Louis Cardinals


The New York Mets were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri and the final score was 6-4.  Noah Syndergaard started for the Mets and he didn’t pitch very good.  Pete Alonso and Robinson Cano each led the team with two hits each. 

Syndergaard pitched five innings giving up eight hits and six runs with four being earned.  He walked two and struck out five and lost his second game of the season.  Robert Gsellman pitched three perfect innings with a strikeout. 

Dakota Hudson pitched five innings giving up five hits and three runs with two walks and five strikeouts.  Hudson won his first game of the season.  John Brebbia pitched 2/3 of an inning with two strikeouts, Andrew Miller pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a walk and two strikeouts and John Gant pitched 1 1/3 innings with a strikeout.  Jordan Hicks pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out two and recorded his fifth save of the season. 

Alonso had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Cano had two hits and an RBI and Michael Conforto had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Amed Rosario had a hit, Syndergaard had a hit and an RBI and Dom Smith drew a walk.  Conforto, Alonso, Cano and Syndergaard each hit a homerun and the Mets were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Rosario committed two errors. 

Paul Goldschmidt had two hits and two RBI, Paul DeJong had a hit and Marcell Ozuna had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Jose Martinez had a hit and drew a walk, Jose Molina had a hit and an RBI, Dexter Fowler had a hit and an RBI and Kolten Wong had a hit and an RBI.  Ozuna and Fowler each hit a double.  The Cardinals were 3-11 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base and Hudson committed an error. 

In the first Alonso hit a solo homerun to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the second Wong hit an RBI single to tie the game at one.  Goldschmidt hit a two-run single to push the lead to 3-1.  In the third Molina hit an RBI ground out and Fowler hit an RBI double and the lead was 5-1.  In the fourth Syndergaard hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 5-2.  In the bottom of the fourth Ozuna hit an RBI double and the lead was 6-2.  Cano hit a solo homerun in the fifth and Conforto hit a solo homerun in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-4.  That would be the final score of the game. 

The Mets lost two out of three in the series and will head home to take on the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night.  It will be the first of a three-game series.

New York Yankees blow lead and then win it on a walk-off in tenth


The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 7-6.  James Paxton started for the Yankees and he pitched great.  Chad Green and Adam Ottavino had trouble out of the bullpen and Brett Gardner and Austin Romine led the team with three hits each. 

Paxton pitched six plus innings giving up three hits and no runs.  He walked one and struck out 12.  Tommy Khanle pitched an inning with two strikeouts, Green pitched giving up two hits and three runs with a walk and didn’t record an out and Ottavino pitched an inning giving up three hits and three runs with a walk and two strikeouts.  Aroldis Chapman pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out two and Zack Britton pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out two and he won his first game of the season.

Jorge Lopez pitched seven innings giving up eight hits and five runs with four of them being earned.  He walked one and struck out six.  Wily Peralta pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout, Scott Barlow pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out two and Jake Diiekman pitched giving up a run and two walks and took his first loss of the season.  Ian Kennedy pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit. 

DJ LeMahieu had a hit, Luke Voit had a hit and Gardner had three hits.  Clint Frazier had a hit and three RBI and Mike Tauchman had two hits and drew a walk.  Gio Urshela drew a walk, Mike Ford got his first major league hit and Romine had three hits and three RBI.  Tyler Wade drew a walk and Ford, LeMahieu and Tauchman each hit a double.  Frazier hit a homerun and the Yankees were 4-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Britton had a pickoff. 

Whit Merrifield had two hits, Adalberto Mondesi had two hits and two RBI and Alex Gordon had two hits and three RBI.  Hunter Dozier had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk, Chris Owings drew a walk and Martin Maldonado had a hit.  Billy Hamilton had a hit and drew a walk, Gordon and Mondesi each hit a double.  Gordon and Dozier each hit a homerun and the Royals were 3-12 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Mondesi had a stolen base and Hamilton had two stolen bases and Gore was caught stealing.  Maldonado had a passed ball. 

In the first a passed ball gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the second Romine hit an RBI single to push the lead to 2-0.  In the fifth Frazier hit a three-run homerun to extend the Yankees lead to 5-0.  In the eighth Mondesi hit a two-run double to cut the lead to 5-2, Gordon hit a three-run homerun to tie the game at five and one batter later Dozier hit a solo homerun giving the Royals a 6-5 lead.  In the bottom of the eighth Romine hit an RBI single to tie the game at six.  In the tenth Romine hit an RBI walk-off single to give the Yankees the 7-6 victory. 

The Yankees took three out of four in the series and will now embark on a three team, nine game road trip to the west coast.
