Here are the postgame notes for the Yankees after a tough Thursday night loss to the White Sox. The Lohud Yankees blog does a great job and I also add in my two cents.
What could have been a win that gave the Yankees a huge confidence boost
after losing both CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte to injury yesterday ended up
being a devastating 4-3 loss that left the clubhouse feeling as somber as it has
in quite some time.
David Robertson is usually one of the last Yankees to express any sort of
displeasure, but it was written all over his face tonight. Clearly, Robertson
was mad at himself for giving up the decisive home run to Dayan Viciedo in the
ninth, but he also was a bit more open about his disappointment with how he was
used than I would have expected. I was suprised by this also. He is never like this, maybe it was just the frustration but he made it clear he wasn't happy with the manager.
“If it’s up to me – if it’s my choice – yeah, I would prefer (to start the
inning),” Robertson said. “But I’ve been in situations before just like that,
and I’ve gotten out of them. Tonight just wasn’t my night.”
With regular closer Rafael Soriano understandably unavailable after pitching
in four of the last five games, Joe Girardi defended his decision not to start
the inning with Robertson.
“His velocity has been not as consistent as before he got hurt, so I’m
watching him,” Girardi said. “I’m going to be cautious.”
Basically, Girardi said that he decided to mix and match in the ninth inning
rather than use Robertson for the second consecutive day. Robertson said that he
felt fine to pitch a full inning, even noting that he felt better in his second
consecutive day of work against the Mets over the weekend than he did in his
first. When asked if he thought he was going to have the opportunity to start and
finish the ninth inning, Robertson responded, “I thought I was.”
Of course, the inning would have never come down to Viciedo’s homer if Clay
Rapada had been able to turn what looked to be a routine double play. After Cody
Eppley gave up a single to lead off the inning, Girardi went to Rapada to face
the lefty A.J. Pierzynski. Rapada induced a weak ground ball right back to the
pitcher, but his throw to second sailed into center field. “I thought I fielded
it very cleanly, I just didn’t get my feet going, and pushed the ball right into
center field,” Rapada said. “It’s really tough because I executed the pitch that
I wanted, I just didn’t do my job as a fielder… Throwing to the chest is
throwing to the chest, and I didn’t do it.” If he would of just gotten at least the one out the Yankees most likely win the game. That was the turning point and a very frustrating play.
Girardi was asked if he regretted his decision to not allow Robertson to
pitch the entire inning. “No, not at all,” he said. “We give up a hit, and we
get a double play ball. I should have been bringing him in with two outs… We’ve
done a lot of mixing and matching, and we’re going to continue to do it.”
Lost in all of the ninth inning madness was a strong outing
from Ivan Nova. He was hit hard at times, but gave the Yankees 7 1/3 innings of
one-run ball. “I have to say my fastball and slider (were working), because my
curveball wasn’t there today,” he said. “But I battled to the end.”
Girardi talked about White Sox starter Dylan Axelrod, who did a pretty good
job against this Yankees lineup other than the fifth inning. “I thought he threw
a lot of sliders that were effective against us,” Girardi said. “Whether they
were behind in the count or ahead in the count, he stayed down and nibbled.” The Yankees have more trouble with those guys especially when they haven't seen him before.
The Yankees did most of their damage in the fifth with two outs. Curtis
Granderson singled, which was followed by an RBI double from A-Rod. I’ve been
saying for quite some time that opposing pitchers seem to always give him these
hittable first-pitch strikes because they know he usually takes them. Tonight,
he jumped on two first-pitch strikes, and it resulted in two doubles. Robby Cano
also had an RBI double in the inning, giving him 19 RBI in the month of
June. Cano is just completely on fire.
With a man on and two outs in the ninth, Derek Jeter hit one to the wall in
right field that could have provided the Yankees with a walkoff win. “I didn’t
know,” Jeter said when asked if he thought it was a home run. “They were playing
no doubles (defense), so it either goes out or he catches it.”
Here’s a typical Derek Jeter response on what it means to tie Cal Ripken,
Jr. for 13th on the all-time hits list: “Right now, it’s kind of hard to sit
around and think about it. Obviously what Cal represents, being a shortstop,
he’s someone that I’ve always admired.”
My opinion on Girardi’s decision not to use Robertson to start the ninth:
He got too cute. I understand that Robertson is coming off of an injury, but he
was obviously available. He’s their set-up man, and when the closer isn’t ready
to go, the set-up man gets to close. You have to show more confidence in a guy
that’s been as good as D-Rob. Girardi has done a great job managing the bullpen
all year. But not tonight. That is Chads take and I would tend to agree with that. I mean bottom line is if the players execute especially Rapada with the easy double play we aren't talking about it but Robertson should of had the clean inning to close it out.

Yankees news and notes after a loss to Oakland
Here are some Yankees news and notes following their loss to the Oakland Athletics today. Thanks to the Lohud Yankees blog for providing some information. If you don't know about the blog it is a great one that Chad Jennings of the Journal News runs.
Less than 24 hours after putting up 17 runs and 17 hits, the Yankees posted three runs and nine hits. They went just 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11, including the potential tying run at third with two outs in the ninth. Rich Harden had his good changeup and held them to two runs and five hits over 5 1-3. And the A’s won 4-3 on a day when the heat index again hit 100. I predicted that, whenever the Yankees, not just them though score a bunch of runs you know they will have trouble the next couple of games most likely.
“You hold this lineup down to a couple of runs, you’re doing something,” Nick Swisher said. “So you’ve got to give credit where credit is due.”
Still, Swisher and Mark Teixeira agree this lineup misses Alex Rodriguez, expected to be out for about another month after knee surgery. The Yankees are 7-5 since Rodriguez went down. They are 5-5 since the All-Star break, alternating wins and losses in the last six games. And they are 9-9 in their last 18.
“He’s Alex Rodriguez,” Teixeira said. “I mean, this is one of the greatest players of all time. His presence, the fact that he has great at-bats, he makes the pitcher work, and then he’s going to drive in 100 runs, hit home runs and do everything he does. So obviously we miss him.”
Brandon Laird played the part of A-Rod in this game, making his first major-league start, at third. But the 23-year-old rookie went 0 for 3 and struck out with two outs and the bases packed in the fourth.
“It was my first time coming up with the bases loaded,” Laird said. “I felt pretty good. I was excited. But it just didn’t go my way. …
“It would’ve been nice to get a win. But I got my first start, got it under my belt, got it out of the way. Hopefully I have some more coming in the future.”
A.J. Burnett is now winless in his last four starts, but he pitched well enough to win in this one, charged with three runs, six hits, three walks and two hit batters while fanning six in 5 2/3. In 21 starts, he has given up three runs or less 13 times and four runs five times. He is what he is, he is great at times, not so great other times but he takes the ball every fifth day and usually gives the Yankees a good chance to win.
“I thought he threw the ball extremely well,” Joe Girardi said.
Rafael Soriano’s rehab assignment will now shift after two outings with High-A Tampa. The reliever is scheduled to pitch today against Syracuse at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He may pitch tomorrow also and then be ready to come back to the Yankees if everything is ok.
David Robertson struck out his ninth consecutive batter with the bases loaded. After a scoreless ninth, he has allowed just two earned runs in his last 26 outings. It is amazing how this guy gets in and out of trouble.
Hideki Matsui’s decisive homer off Boone Logan in the seventh snapped a 16 2-3-scoreless innings streak for the bullpen. Matsui has homered in four of his last five games here, all in a visiting uniform.
Derek Jeter went 3 for 4 with a walk and is batting .333 (21 for 63) in July after batting a combined .260 the first three months. He isn't this good but you also didn't think he was as bad as he was hitting. I would think he could still hit 280 or maybe even 290. We will see but hopefully for the Yankees he is more like the hitter now then the first three months.

Yankees Visit tithe White House
The New York Yankees had a off day today but they did visit the White House. They also visited Walter Reed Medical Center before attending the ceremony in the white house. If you haven't see any video it is on youtube and there are some good pictures on the Lohud Yankees Blog via the Associated Press. It was a nice speech the president gave. He singled out Mark Teixieira, Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada. The Yankees felt it was a great experience and that they gained a lot from it. They will be ready to go back to work tomorrow against the Baltimore Orioles for the start of a 3 game series.

Yankees Postgame Notes
Javier Vazquez wasn't great but I don't know if he deserved the boos he received today. Javier didn't pitch particularly well but the fans are remembering him more for what he did his last time around in 2004. They aren't going to give him much of a chance because of that and it is something that Vazquez will have to work through. Here is what Joe Girardi said "As soon as he can get a win here, I think it will be best for all of us. Fans they remember, his next start will be on the road and it would be nice to get him a win and on a roll. Today we didn't score many runs, he could of won that game as well if we would of scored some runs today."
Vazquez said it was "disappointing" to hear the boos but was upset with himself mostly. He was pressed by the media and finally admitted he thinks it is too early to be booed.
Derek Jeter said "The bottom line is, they are Yankee fans. They want to cheer for you, they come here to cheer for you. Everyone has been booed at some point. You can't let it affect you. If Javy gives up three runs everytime he pitches he is going to have a pretty good year."
Nick Swisher said this about Joel Piniero "I can remember him from back when he was with Seattle. He was a power guy, threw really hard. Now he still has that power in there but is using it more for movement. He threw some great sinkers today. Just when you think it is going to be in the zone it falls off the table."
Robinson Cano has hit safely in all 8 games this season and has more multi hit games then one hit games. He has 5 multi hit games.
Scott Kazmir will come off the DL tomorrow to make the start against the Yankees. Thanks to Chad Jennings for providing the quotes on his Lohud Yankees Blog.

Derek Jeters Contract Status
The New York Yankees will come to a interesting place at the end of this season. Derek Jeters contract is up and they have will have to pay him. He will be 36 yrs old and is a shortstop which is a story for another day. Derek Jeter is the Yankees and will be for the next 50 or 60 years. He will eventually retire but will still be the one that comes out last at the Old Timers Days and will be the best known and most popular Yankee. The Yankees could never let him wear another uniform and he doesn't want to either. The debate will be how much will he get and how much should he get. Derek Jeter may want to act tough with the Yankees although I doubt he will and if he does then what happens.
The reason I have brough all this up is because Derek Jeter had a one on one interview with Harold Reynolds. The interview ran on MLB Network last night and if you haven't seen it, it is a good one. Here is the video, enjoy it.
Hank Steinbrenner after missing for months now resurfaced today. He had this to say:
He like the Yankees move so far and thinks they have a good chance of repeating. Here is what he had to say about Derek Jeter and his contract situation " We will get into all of that eventually. Jeters place in Yankees history is obvious, so I think you can pretty much assume from there." A little side not to this, Jeter is already down in Tampa working out. Those quotes from Steinbrenner came courtesy of the AP and were posted on the great Lohud Yankees Blog by Chad Jennings and Sam Borden.

A Joba Chamberlain story
This link came via the Lohud Yankees Blog and Sam Borden. It is a story about Joba Chamberlain being at a Native American Reservation where he grew up and talking to the schoolkids and also giving them some yankees paraphernalia and autographs. It is good to see that he learned from his mistakes of a year ago when he had the DUI. I met Joba Chamberlain when he was with the Trenton Thunder not too long before he came to the majors and he was a really cool guy. He signed for everyone that day also and really interacted with all of us. I still feel he can be a very good starting pitcher but I can also seem him back in the pen this year. If the Yankees don't sign another pitcher I wouldn't mind him and Hughes in the back of the rotation though. It is funny though that this year Phil Hughes will have the rule and Joba will be turned loose. I hope you guys enjoy this article, dont forget to click on the link.

Rangers at Yankees
The New York Yankees will try to even this three game series tonight at 7:10PM on the Yes network and ESPN 2. Andy Pettitte will be taking the mound. The Yankees start tonight with a 6 game lead on the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via Peter Abrahams Lohud Yankees Blog.
Robinson Cano hit his 20th homerun last night making it 6 Yankees which matches the 1961 and 2004 teams, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada have a chance to make it 7 or 8 Yankees.
Derek Jeter snapped a streak of 113 plate appearances without a walk when he walked last night. Jeter has multiple hit games in 11 of his last 13 games.
Hideki Matsui has 17 rbi's over his last 8 games. 8 of his last 13 hits have been for extra bases. 7 of them are homers.
Andy Pettitte will be the 3rd starter in the playoffs. He is 2-1 with 2.82 era since the all star break. Over 44 2/3 innings he has allowed only 38 hits and struck out 47.

Rangers at Yankees
The New York Yankees begin a 3 game series with the Texas Rangers tonight from Yankee Stadium. The game is at 7:05 on the YES network. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via the Lohud Yankees Blog at http://lhblogs.com.
The Yankees are 27-9 since the all star break and have won 16 of their last 20.
The Rangers have lost 4 of 6 and trail the Red Sox by 1 1/2 in the race for the wildcard.
The Yankees are 4-2 against Texas this season. They are 27-12 against them over the last 5 seasons.
Joba is pitching for the first time tonight since August 16th. He is 4-1 with a 3.35 era since the all star break. He is 1-1 with a 6.75 in his last 3 starts though, allowing 12 runs on 18 hits with 12 walks in his last 16 innings.
Joba has a 7.11 career era against Texas in 3 starts with no record.
Derek Jeter needs 20 more hits to tie Lou Gehrig for the franchise record.
Yankees Lineup:
Jeter(SS)
Damon(LF)
Tex(1B)
A-rod(3B)
Matsui(DH)
Posada(C)
Cano(2B)
Swisher(RF)
Cabrera(CF)
The Yankees lead the Angels by 2 games in the loss column for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. This is the only real race the Yankees are in as they have 38 games left, the Angels have 40. The two teams will meet 4 more times, once in a makeup game at Yankee Stadium and a 3 game series in Anaheim. The Yankees will try and get it but not at the expense of injurying or wearing out their players. This will be fun to keep an eye on, my guess is the Yankees will win it but it may just come down to the 4 head to head games and the Yankees need to show they can beat the Angels.

Yankees at Red Sox(The Rubber Game)
The New York Yankees will try and win the 3 game series with the Boston Red Sox tonight at 8 on ESPN. The Yankees also will be finishing a roadtrip where they are 6-3, 7-3 would be great and 6-4 isn't bad if they lose. CC Sabathia will go up against Josh Beckett in a marquee matchup. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via the Lohud Yankees Blog.
The Yankees are 5-9 against the Red Sox this season being outscored 118-114.
Derek Jeter is one hit away from 2,700 for his career. He is 16 of his last 29 and 19 of 39 on the roadtrip with 8 rbi's and 8 runs scored.
Sabathia is 4-0 with a 2.35 era in his last 4 starts. He has pitched 30 2/3 innings allowing 20 hits, 5 walks and striking out 31.
Sabathia is 32-9 with a 3.14 era in August in his career.
Josh Beckett is 2-0 with 4.12 era in 4 starts against the Yankees this season.
Boston has 20 homeruns in their last 8 games.
David Ortiz has 5 homeruns in his last 8 games. Boston is 18-2 when he hits a homerun so CC don't give up a homerun to him.
Nick Swisher has 18 of his 21 homeruns on the road. He has hit in 8 straight games with 5 runs scored, 7 rbi's.
Yankee relievers in the last 2 games have allowed 7 innings, 11 hits, 9 earned runs and 3 homeruns. Of course this is Fenway Park and a lot of pitchers have bad days there.
Check out weei.com to see what Jonathan Papelbon said about Billy Wagner. I would tell him to let the GM worry about trades and stuff and not him, of course he had to be classy and open his mouth as usual.
Jason Giambi and Russ Ortiz were signed by the Colorado Rockies today.

Yankees at Mariners
The New York Yankees will try and win their 3rd straight in Seattle and 5th straight overall. Here are some quick notes and lineup from Peter Abraham of Lohud Yankees Blog.
Derek Jeter has 2,670 hits as a SS. The major league record is 2,673 held by Hall Of Famer Luis Aparicio. Derek Jeter will soon be passing him.
MO has converted 30 straight saves, 1 shy of his career record in 2005.
The Yankees have allowed 6 earned runs and struck out 27 in their last 29 innings. Thats a 1.86 era.
The Yankees are 3-2 in games Mitre started which is incredible. He has allowed 38 hits, 4 of which have been homeruns. He has also allowed 6 walks and committed 3 errors in 23 innings.
Robinson Cano has a 12 game hit streak in which he is 22 of 53.
The Yankees bullpen has allowed 1 run in their last 16 innings.
The Yankees are 4-1 against Seattle this season and 28-18 at Safeco Field lifetime.
Damaso Mate's 30 game rehab assignment ended yesterday but he has been excused from the team for personal reasons and is still on the 60 day DL. I don't know why but it looks like the Yankees just don't want him on the team. I would like another lefty but they are doing well without him.
A-rod said he felt good enough to play and he is in the lineup.
Yankees Lineup:

New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners
The New York Yankees begin a 4 game set in Seattle tonight at 10:05 on the Yes network. This is also the start of a long 3 city 10 game roadtrip that concludes in Boston. Here are the notes and lineup from the Lohud Yankees Blog by Peter Abraham of the Journal News.
The Yankees are 30-25 on the road this season, only the Angels are better at 32-22. Everyone else in the league is under 500.
CC Sabathia is 4-1 with a 2.83 era in 7 career starts at Safeco Field. CC faced them at Yankee stadium this season and was bad giving up 10 hits and 6 runs in 5 2/3 innings.
CC is 30-9 with a 3.21 era in 48 career starts in August.
Johnny Damon has 9 xbh with 5 being homeruns in his last 9 games.
Melky Cabrera is batting 139 in 9 games since hitting for the cycle in Chicago.
Phil Coke has made 55 appearances this year, only 11 guys have more, 2 in the AL which are Craig Breslow and Matt Guerrier.
Robinson Cano is really hot going 18 of his last 39 with 8 xbh and 4 rbi's. He has 8 multihit games in his last 9 games.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees
The New York Yankees begin a 3 game series with the Blue Jays at Yankee stadium tonight at 7:00PM on the YES network. Here are a few notes from the Lohud Yankees Blog and the lineup.
The pitching staff has a 2.50 era during the 7 game winning streak allowing 56 runs and 20 hits over 69 innings. They have thrown 62 percent of their pitches for strikes and held opponents to a 224 batting average.
The Yankees are 7-2 against Toronto this season.
MO has not allowed a run since June 12th a stretch of 21 1/3 innings. His era now stands at 1.88. He has allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in his last 5 1/3 innings though.
A-rod hit his 574th homerun last night putting him at 9th all time, Mark McGwire is up next at 583 homeruns.
The Yankees at 27 games over 500 are at their highest point since the end of the 2006 season when they finished 97-65.
Cody Ransom cleared waivers and accepted a assignment to Scranton, this is nice he is a good guy that had a horrible tragedy in college.

Cape Cod Baseball
The Yankees play a 8:00PM ESPN Sunday night baseball game tonight so there wont be any game posts for a while. I forgot to post this the other day but there was a good post on the Lohud Yankees Blog about some of the Yankees draft picks that have been playing in the Cape Cod League this summer. The Cape Cod League for those who don't know is the oldest and best amateur league out there. I have been to a few games up there and it is worth going too. This is really baseball at its most pure and best, you don't pay admission but they do send around a hat in the crowd for donations and you can donate whatever you would like. My Parents own a home in Cape Cod and that is how I have been to a few games, each team in the different towns have their own uniqueness and you get to talk to the players and get autographs. IF you look at all the major leaguers that have played there it is amazing and you are probably seeing at least a couple future major leaguers so check out the post and also check out www.capecodbaseball.org

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees
The Yankees will try and beat the Red Sox for the first time this season and tonight may be their best chance. Joba is flying high pitching the best he has in his career as a starter and John Smoltz looks old and washed up. I think this is the most important game of the series as the Yankees need to stop hearing about how they can't beat the Sox. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via the Lohud Yankees Blog.
Joba is 3-0 with a 0.83 era since the all star break. He has allowed 8 hits over 21 2/3 innings with 8 walks and 19 strikeouts.
Joba is 2-1 with a 3.49 era in his career against the Sox.
Joba as a starter in his career is 10-3 with a 3.27 era. The debate will never end but this is where he belongs in my opinion, he will get better and better and has the potential to be a #1 starter.
The Yankees have won 14 of 19 and 25 of their last 35.
The Red Sox are 7-10 since July 17 and 24-20 since June 13th.
MO has gone 19 1/3 innings without allowing a run. He has 18 strikeouts in that time.
Nick Swisher is heating up going 11 for his last 34 with 6 xbh.
Johnny Damon is 10 of his last 22 with 2 homeruns and 6 rbi's.
A-rod is way overdue going 61 at bats without a homerun which is the longest of his Yankees career.
Yankees Lineup:
Jeter(SS)
Damon(LF)
Tex(1B)
A-rod(3B)
Matsui(DH)
Posada(C)
Cano(2B)
Swisher(RF)
Cabrera(CF)

Yankees at Jays
The Yankees begin a 2 game set in Toronto tonight with Andy Pettitte on the mound against Roy Halladay. This is going to be a really tough game to win tonight even though the Yankees actually hit him pretty hard last time they faced him at Yankee Stadium. I don't think they will but the Yankees can't look ahead to the Red Sox they have to win at least one of these games, the Red Sox will have their hands full down in Tampa with the Rays. Here are the pregame notes and lineup from the Lohud Yankees Blog- http://yankees.lhblogs.com Peter Abraham does a great job so please check him out if you don't already do so.
The Yankees are 5-2 against the Jays this year.
Roy Halladay is 16-5 in his career against the Yanks with a 2.90 era. He is 8-0 with a 2.10 era in his last 10 starts against them. I don't know what the strategy really is but I think I would try to bunt on him a little and get guys on base and steal. The only good thing is he doesn't get run support so if you can scratch out a couple maybe you can win the game.
Andy Pettitte is 13-5 with a 3.95 era in 19 career starts at the Rogers Centre. He is 1-1 with a 5.25 against the Jays this year. Andy since the break has been good, in 3 starts he has a 2.70 era. In 20 innings he has struck out 23 while only giving up 3 walks and 16 hits.
Mo has not allowed a run since June 12th and Hughes has a 0.95 era in 20 relief appearances so the back end is very very solid.
The Yankees with RISP on this road trip are batting 233, this is the one thing I don't like. Yes the Yanks lead in many offensive categories but they are not consistant at all.
Melky is 15 of 35 in his last 11 games with 10 xbh, 5 rbi's, 6 walks and only has struck out twice.
Derek Jeter is 6 stolen bases away from 300 in his career.
The Yankees pitching has to get back on track, in their last 3 games they have given up 41 hits in 25 innings with 29 earned runs, 13 walks and 20 strikeouts.
Alfredo Aceves has not done well since having his shoulder fatigue. He has given up 10 earned runs in his last 8 1/3 innings. He has only pitched twice since July 21st which is probably part of the problem.
Mark Melancon has not allowed a run in his last 4 1/3 innings, could he start getting more important work, maybe but maybe not this week.
Joe Girardi has been great with the bullpen in most peoples eyes. I would say this is his biggest strength. In the time since he has been manager the Yankees are 110-5 when leading after 6 innings, 120-5 when leading after 7 innings and 129-1 when leading after 8 innings. It is pretty safe to say if the Yankees have a lead after 6 they are going to win.
A-rod has gone 53 at bats without a homerun. This could be the place he breaks out of his homerun drought. He has hit 303 with 31 homeruns in his career at the Rogers Centre.
Jorge Posada has had a miserable road trip going 3 for 23.
