The New York Mets were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 6-3. The game took place at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. Jeremy Hefner started for the Mets and pitched ok and the bullpen wasn’t so good. Daniel Murphy led the offense with three of their four hits.
Hefner pitched six innings giving up five hits and three runs with four walks and a couple of strikeouts. Scott Rice took his third loss of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs with a strikeout, Scott Atchison didn’t record an out and gave up three hits and a run and Greg Burke pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and striking out one.
Murphy had three hits and two RBI, David Wright had a hit and an RBI and Ike Davis drew a walk. Lucas Duda drew two walks, John Buck drew a walk and Rick Ankiel drew a walk. Murphy hit a double and the Mets were 2-3 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Duda had an outfield assist.
Lance Lynn pitched seven innings giving up four hits and three runs with five walks and seven strikeouts. Lynn won his sixth game of the season. Randy Choate pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a walk, Trevor Rosenthal pitched to two batters and struck them both out and Edward Mujica saved his tenth game of the season pitching a perfect inning with a strikeout.
Matt Carpenter had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk, Carlos Beltran drew a walk and Matt Holliday had two hits and two RBI. Allen Craig had two hits and an RBI, Yadier Molina had a hit and drew a walk and John Jay had an RBI and drew a walk. David Freese had a hit, Descalso had two hits and Ty Wigginton had a hit. Craig, Wigginton and Molina each hit a double. Holliday hit a homerun and the Cardinals were 3-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Descalso had a stolen base.
In the first Craig hit an RBI double and Jay hit into a sacrifice double play with a run scoring. The Cardinals had a 2-0 lead. In the second Murphy hit a two run double and Wright hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. Carpenter hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second to tie the game at three. In the seventh Carpenter hit an RBI single and Holliday hit a two run homerun to make it a 6-3 game which would be the final score.
The Mets record fell to 14-21 and the Cardinals record improved to 24-13. The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Tuesday night.
