New York Yankees full squad reports

It has been pretty quiet in Yankees camp so far.  Aroldis Chapman did miss one day of practice already but the Yankees said it was a scheduled day off and they were fine with it.  He is also missing today, the first full squad workout day which the Yankees said was also known about a long time ago and it is an excused absence.  The possible suspension is also looming with him.  I guess you can say he has been the big story so far.

Alex Rodriguez will have a press conference this afternoon for his first official day in camp.  He is always a big story but it is a lot different than at this time last year.  The Yankees announced today that Brett Gardner is suffering from a bone bruise in his wrist, he hurt it during the wild card game in October and complained about a week later.  They said it is no big deal, just being cautious because they can be and he will be fine for Opening Day in six weeks.  Brian Cashman the general manager even said he could be ready for exhibition games which start next week.  Mason Williams will be on the DL to start the season as he is still recovering from shoulder surgery.  He feels much better though.

Rob Refsnyder who has become a bit of a fan favorite has also become a big story which is kind of funny.  We all assumed he might get traded or just be stuck in AAA when the Yankees traded for Starlin Castro to be their everyday second baseman.  That may not be the case, it still could be but it looks like the Yankees may be trying to fit him in on the bench and make him more versatile.  He started as an OF and has improved at 2B, now they are going to try him out as the backup 3B for Chase Headley, they also said they will try Castro out in that position but if that is the case Refsnyder can also play 2B if Castro is playing 3B.  It will be interesting to see exactly what they do with Refsnyder who can hit but his defense has always been a question and who the fans have fallen in love with.

Masahiro Tanaka already threw a side session today and once again no bad reports so he is moving along.  Hideki Matsui arrived in camp today as a special guest instructor, always good to see him around.  Jacoby Ellsbury was benched the last time we saw him which was that wild card game loss to the Houston Astros in October.  He said there is nothing to discuss and that he feels 100 percent.  He said that is all behind them, that he spoke with Joe Girardi that day and it was left at that.  Ellsbury said that he felt he was getting better during the season but it wasn't until after the season that he realized maybe he wasn't 100 percent, he said you don't have time for that during the season and now he feels fine and ready to go.

Mark Teixeira said yesterday that he wants to play another five years until he is 40.  I would doubt it would be with the Yankees but if he has another good year this year and stays healthy would the Yankees bring him back for a year or two??  It is interested to think about especially with Greg Bird the heir apparent being out for the season.  Girardi has talked about resting these guys more during the season to keep them fresh and I think that is a good idea and they have better backups now to make that happen.

The New York Yankees lose both games of a doubleheader in Baltimore

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night.  The game one score was 9-2 and game two was 4-3 Baltimore with both games taking place at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland.  In game one Ivan Nova started and didn't pitch very well and the Yankees stranded too many runners in game two Luis Severino pitched well, Dellin Betances gave up a soft run in the eighth and the offense didn't get a big hit when they needed it.  The Yankees could have clinched home field advantage for the wild card game with just one win and now they need to play tomorrow because it will matter  unless Houston loses but as of this writing they are winning.

Ivan Nova pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up eight hits and five runs with three walks and four strikeouts and he took his 11th loss of the season.  Chasen Shreve pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and two runs with a walk, Nick Goody pitched an inning giving up three hits and two runs with a walk and Chris Martin pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

In game two Severino pitched seven innings giving up three runs on five hits.  He walked none and struck out six and Betances pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and three strikeouts and took his fourth loss of the season.

In game two Ubaldo Jimenez started and pitched six innings giving up five hits and three runs with three walks and seven strikeouts.  T.J. McFarland won his second game of the season pitching two perfect innings with a strikeout and Zach Britton saved his 36th game of the season pitching an inning giving up a hit.

Hardy had three hits and Davis hit a double and Parra hit two doubles.  Machado hit a homerun and the Orioles were 4-15 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.  Parra had a stolen base and Chen committed an error, Pearce had an outfield assist.

In game two Reimold had a hit and an RBI, Parra had two hits and Machado had a hit and an RBI.  Davis drew a walk, Pearce had a hit and an RBI and Paul Janish had two hits.   Pearce and Janish each hit a double and Reimold and Machado each hit a homerun.  the Orioles were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Parra had a stolen base and was caught stealing.  Britton had a pick off.

In the first game the Orioles scored single runs in the first, third and fifth and then scored four in the sixth before the Yankees scored their only two runs in the seventh.  The Orioles answered right back in the seventh with two and that was the game.  In game two Baltimore jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and the Yankees answerd back with one in the second and the Orioles one in the third.  It was 3-1 Orioles and the Yankees tied it with two in the fifth before the Orioles got one in the eighth to go ahead and hold on to the 4-3 victory.  The Yankees now have one game left in the regular season needing a win if Houston wins tonight to secure home field advantage for the wild card game to take place on Tuesday night.  Michael Pineda will start and I would guess and hope that the Yankees will play their regular lineup trying to lock up home field.

New York Yankees release their non roster spring training invite list

The New York Yankees announced on Thursday afternoon their non roster spring training invite list.  It is headlined by top prospects Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Greg Bird, Jacob Lindgren and Rob Refsnyder.  The Yankees also announced six minor league signings and then the 20 other players that were the invites to go with everyone on the 40 man roster.

The six minor league contract guys with invites to spring training are Scott Baker a right handed pitcher, infielder Cole Figueroa, infielder Jonathan Galvez, catcher Juan Graterol, infielder Nick Noonan and catcher Eddy Rodriguez.  Baker is a guy who has had a decent career as a starting pitcher mainly with the Minnesota Twins.  He will be insurance in case someone gets hurt in spring training and he has an out clause but we don't know when that is.  I am sure if he doesn't make the team he won't want to go to AAA.  The infielders are guys who could also potentially make the team but I would list that as very unlikely unless major injuries happen.  The Yankees are probably going to have Stephen Drew at second and Didi Gregorius at short with Rob Refsnyder in AAA ready to take over at second sometime this year or next year.  The utility guy is probably going to be Jose Pirela.

The bright up and comers that headline the prospects that will be in camp are Severino and Judge.  Severino is a dynamite starter who led all Yankees farmhands last season with 127 strikeouts.  He should start the year in AA Trenton and is rated as baseballs 23rd best prospect.  He will have a chance to make a good first impression and could even reach AAA at some point this year and be knocking on the door to the big leagues.  Judge is a power hitting right fielder who should also start out at AA Trenton.  He led the prospects in RBI last year with 78 and was rated as 68 prospect in baseball.  The Yankees have 14 guys in camp who were originally drafted by the Yankees.  Lindgren is included in this list as he was the second round pick in last year draft.  He is a left handed reliever and considered the Yankees ninth best prospect.  He could appear in the majors this season after advancing to AA last year and posting a 2.16 ERA.  Right handed reliever Nick Rumbelow, left handed reliever Tyler Webb and catcher Trent Garrison are also products of the 2014 draft.  Infielder Rob Refsnyder who is the Yankees number 6 prospect, right hander Nick Goody, left hander James Pazos were drafted in 2012 and infielder Greg Bird who is the Yankees number 11 prospect and Jack Cave the number 8 prospect were drafted in 2011.  The Yankees draft selections are rounded out by Cito Culver and Slade Heathcott who were first round selections.  Kyle Roller who is a 1B and catcher Kyle Higashioka.  In addition catcher Francisco Arcia, right hander Vincente Campos, right hander Diego Moreno and right hander Wilking Rodriguez have been invited to camp.  Andrew Bailey was also included in the list, he is a former big league closer who had been rehabbing with the Yankees last year.  He is 30 years old and owns 89 saves over 206 career appearances with the Athletics and Red Sox.

The total number of players expected to report to camp is 66 with pitchers and catchers reporting on Friday February 20, 2015 and position players reporting a few days later with the first full squad workout scheduled for February 26, 2015.
