Yankees top the Royals in ALDS Game 1 back and forth

 

The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 6-5.  Gerrit Cole started, and he didn’t pitch well, the bullpen did a good job.  Juan Soto led the offense with three hits and Alex Verdugo had the game winning hit. 

Cole pitched five innings giving up seven hits and four runs with three of them being earned.  He walked two and struck out four.  Tim Hill pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and an unearned run, Clay Holmes picked up the win pitching 1 2/3 innings and giving up a hit and Tommy Khanle pitched 2/3 of an inning with a walk.  Luke Weaver picked up the save pitching 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. 

Michael Wacha started for the Royals, and he pitched four innings giving up four hits and three runs with three walks and three strikeouts.  Angel Zerpa pitched giving up a hit and a run with two walks and didn’t record an out, John Schreiber pitched an inning giving up a walk and he struck out one and Sam Long pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit, a run, a walk and a strikeout.  Michael Lorenzen pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up three hits and a run with three strikeouts and he took the loss.  Lucas Erceg pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a walk and he struck out three. 

Gleyber Torres had a hit, two RBI and drew two walks, Soto had three hits and Aaron Judge drew a walk.  Austin Wells had a hit, two RBI and drew two walks, Giancarlo Stanton drew a walk and Jazz Chisholm had a hit.  Anthony Volpe had an RBI and drew a walk, Oswaldo Cabrera had a hit and Verdugo had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Soto and Cabrera each hit a double and Torres hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 2-13 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.  Chisholm had a stolen base and Volpe committed an error.  Soto had an outfield assist. 

Michael Massey had two hits, Salvador Perez had a hit and Yuli Gurriel had a hit and drew two walks and MJ Melendez had two hits and two RBI.  Tommy Pham had a hit and an RBI, Garrett Hampson had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk and Maikel Garcia had a hit.  Melendez hit a homerun, and the Royals were 2-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. 

In the top of the second Pham hit a sac fly giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the third Torres hit a two-run homerun giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.  In the top of the fourth Melendez hit a two-run homerun giving the Royals back a one run lead at 3-2.  In the bottom of the fifth Wells drew an RBI walk and Volpe drew an RBI walk giving the Yankees a 4-3 lead.  In the top of the sixth Hampson hit a two-run single giving the Royals back the lead at 5-4.  In the bottom of the sixth Wells hit an RBI single tying the game at five and in the bottom of the seventh Verdugo hit an RBI single giving the Yankees a 6-5 lead which would be the final score.  The two teams will play game two Monday night in the Bronx.

New York Yankees slug the Boston Red Sox

 

The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.  The game took place at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts and the final score was 8-1.  Luis Gil started for the Yankees, and he pitched well but not long because of some wildness.  The bullpen pitched well, and Alex Verdugo led the offense with three hits and four RBI in his return to Boston. 

Gil pitched five innings giving up four hits and a run with four walks and six strikeouts.  Gil won his ninth game of the season.  Tommy Khanle pitched 2/3 of an inning with two walks and two strikeouts, Caleb Ferguson pitched 1 1/3 innings and striking out four and Victor Gonzalez pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit.  Michael Tonkin pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a walk and he struck out two. 

Brayan Bello started for the Red Sox, and he pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up six hits and five runs with four of them being earned.  He walked three and struck out five and took his fourth loss of the season.  Cam Booser pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Zack Kelly pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts.  Chase Anderson pitched two innings giving up three hits and three runs with a walk and three strikeouts. 

Anthony Volpe had a hit, Juan Soto had a hit and drew a walk and Aaron Judge had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Verdugo had three hits and four RBI, Giancarlo Stanton had a hit and drew a walk and Anthony Rizzo had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Jose Trevino had a hit and an RBI, Soto, Verdugo and Judge each hit a double and Verdugo and Trevino each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 4-11 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Volpe had two stolen bases. 

Jarren Duran had a hit and drew two walks, Rafael Devers drew two walks and Masataka Yoshida drew a walk.  Connor Wong had a hit and drew a walk, Enmanuel Valdez had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Jamie Westbrook had a hit.  Ceddanne Rafaela had a hit, Valdez hit a double and the Red Sox were 1-11 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.  Bello and O’Neill each committed an error. 

In the first Verdugo hit a two-run homerun giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  In the fourth Cabrera reached on an error and a run scored to make it 3-0 Yankees.  In the bottom of the fourth Valdez hit an RBI double cutting the lead to 3-1.  In the fifth Verdugo hit an RBI double, Rizzo hit an RBI single and it was 5-1 Yankees.  In the ninth Trevino hit a solo homerun, Judge hit an RBI double and Verdugo hit an RBI single to push the lead to 8-1 and that would be the final score.  The two teams will play game two of three on Saturday night.

New York Yankees double up the Kansas City Royals

 

The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.  The game took place at Kaufmann Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri and the final score was 4-2.  Carlos Rodon started for the Yankees, and he pitched well and Alex Verdugo and Jose Trevino led the offense with a couple of hits each. 

Rodon pitched seven innings giving up five hits and a run with three strikeouts.  Rodon picked up his ninth win of the season.  Ian Hamilton pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with three strikeouts, Michael Tonkin pitched an inning with a walk and two strikeouts. 

Seth Lugo started for the Royals, and he pitched seven innings giving up eight hits and four runs with a walk and four strikeouts.  Lugo lost his second game of the season.  Dan Altavilla pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Sam Long pitched an inning giving up a hit. 

Juan Soto had a hit and drew a walk; Gleyber Torres had a hit and Verdugo had two hits and an RBI.  DJ LeMahieu had a hit and an RBI; Jahmai Jones had a hit and Trevino had two hits and two RBI.  Oswaldo Cabrera had a hit.   The Yankees were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Jones was caught stealing. 

Bobby Witt Jr. had a hit and an RBI, Salvador Perez had a hit and Nelson Velazquez had a hit.  Nick Loftin had two hits and drew a walk, Freddy Fermin had a hit and an RBI and Dairon Blanco had a hit.  Witt Jr. hit a double and the Royals were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Blanco had a stolen base. 

In the first Verdugo hit an RBI single and LeMahieu had a sac bunt scoring a run and giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  In the fourth Trevino hit a two-run single pushing the lead to 4-0.  In the bottom of the seventh Fermin hit an RBI single cutting the lead to 4-1.  In the bottom of the eighth Witt Jr. hit an RBI double cutting the lead to 4-2 and that would be the final score.  The two teams will play game two of four on Tuesday night.

New York Yankees win second straight in San Diego

 

The New York Yankees defeated the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.  The game took place at Petco Park in San Diego, California and the final score was 4-1.  Marcus Stroman started for the Yankees and he pitched well, the bullpen pitched well and the offense was led by Anthony Volpe, Aaron Judge and Alex Verdugo each had two hits. 

Stroman won his fourth game of the season pitching six innings and giving up three hits and no runs with a walk and five strikeouts.  Luke Weaver pitched two innings giving up a hit and a run with two walks and a strikeout and Clay Holmes pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and he earned his 15th save of the season. 

Dylan Cease started for the Padres and he pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up eight hits and four runs with no walks and nine strikeouts.  Cease lost his fourth game of the season.  Yuki Matsui pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts and Enyel De Los Santos pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts. 

Volpe had two hits, Judge had two hits and two RBI and Verdugo had two hits.  Anthony Rizzo had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Gleyber Torres had a hit and an RBI and Oswaldo Cabrera had a hit.  Judge hit a double and a homerun and the Yankees were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. 

Luis Arraez had a hit, Fernando Tatis Jr. had a hit and an RBI and Jurikson Profar drew a walk.  Jake Cronenworth had a hit, Manny Machado had a hit and Luis Campusano drew two walks.  Cronenworth hit a triple and Tatis Jr. hit a homerun and the Padres were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. 

In the first Judge hit a two-run homerun giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  In the fourth Rizzo hit an RBI single extending the lead to 3-0 and Torres hit a sac fly making it 4-0.  In the bottom of the eight Tatis Jr. hit a solo homerun cutting the lead to 4-1 and that was the final score.  The Yankees will look for the three game sweep on Sunday afternoon.
