Alex Rodriguez injury worse then thought??

Alex Rodriguez doctor spoke on Tuesday and it seems that his injury may be worse then we thought. He still hasn’t had his surgery but will do so soon. The estimated time of recovery puts him back at no earlier then the All Star Break. He most likely won’t see any playing action until at least the end of July or maybe August.
The extent of the damage to the hip won’t be known until he is on the operating table. The doctor Dr. Kelly said “The big question is, how much cartilage damage is there, and how much unfixable damage is there?” The surgery according to Dr. Kelly is very technically challenging and it will be a two hour surgery. It is an arthroscopic procedure involved making three small incisions in the hip, penetrating three layers of muscle, inserting a camera to assess the damage, implanting an anchor in the top of the hip and reattaching the torn labrum to it, reshaping the femoral head of the hip to provide a greater range of motion and finally repairing as much of the cartilage as possible.

He said they can fix two of the three problems but the cartilage is a permanent injury and they won’t know how extensive the injury is until they are in there. The exam that was done by the doctor revealed some cartilage wear. This isn’t a very encouraging thing for the Yankees. If you are one of those that don’t believe Rodriguez will be viable going forward this certainly helps your case. I personally don’t know what to make of this, I know for sure we won’t be seeing 30 and 100 any longer but is 20 and 80 possible and a 270 average, I would say probably. If this is possible is it enough?? Not for the money they are paying him but as a DH?? It may be and it may have to be as there isn’t much choice, he has five years left and isn’t going anywhere.

New York Yankees Postgame notes from Boston

Four games in three days at Fenway. We all knew it was coming, and we knew there was no hope of making it quick and easy. The best the Yankees could hope for was to win a few more games and go into the All-Star break on a roll, which is exactly what they’ve done.  The Yankees took three of four and lead the Red Sox by 10 in the loss column.  The Sox are battered and bruised, they could still make a run but it will take a lot for them to beat out the Yankees.  Here are the postgame notes from Sunday night in Boston.  Thanks to Chad Jennings of the Journal News and the Lohud Yankees blog for the information and my thoughts are mixed in.

“I’d rather play four-hour games that we win than four-hour games that we lose,” Mark Teixeira said.
The Yankees took three of four here in Boston. They have the best record in baseball and a seven-game lead in the American League East. Monday will mark seven weeks since the Yankees lost that game against Kansas City, the loss that dropped them into a last-place tie with a .500 record. Since then they’ve gone 31-12.  I would say that is pretty impressive, they hit rock bottom and then a switch went on.  The Yankees have had injuries and ineffectiveness offensively but they have had great pitching and a great bench to lead them to this.

“There’s a lot more attention paid when we play Boston,” Derek Jeter said. “But I think we’ve been playing good regardless of who the opposition has been.”  The Yankees have been playing good no matter who they are playing and have mostly played teams with winning records which makes it more impressive.

Jeter was rolling his shoulder around quite a bit tonight, especially early in the game. “It’s fine,” he said. “Just a little muscle spasm.” He’s still going to Kansas City and still planning to play in Tuesday’s All-Star Game.

With that muscle spasm, Jeter had three hits including a first-inning single. He’s now hitting .400 in the first inning this season. He also tied Carl Yastrzemski for 16th place on baseball’s all-time runs scored list with 1,816.  It is amazing to see all the guys he is passing on different lists now.

That said, which Jeter moment do you most remember from tonight’s game? “I wish I had a good story for you to say a bird hit it or something, but it basically was a popup and I dropped it,” Jeter said. “Nothing else to say. I think I’ve done it one other time in my career that I can remember, in Anaheim. I don’t know, man. I dropped it. I had two hands, and it didn’t go in my glove or my hand, so I dropped it. It’s probably, if you think about it, it’s probably the most embarrassing thing that can happen to a player on defense. Whether it’s an infielder, outfielder, catcher. I wish I could tell you the wind was gusting and blew it all over the place, but it didn’t happen. I just dropped it.”  You have to respect him for that honesty but what else could he say.  In that case there is nothing to say, he did just drop it, nothing else happened why even bother trying to say something happened when it didn't.

Jeter said absolutely no one on the bench gave him a hard time about the error. “No, you don’t do that,” Jeter explained. “Because then there will be more popups hit. I remember the last time I did it, I was laughing at Johnny. Johnny Damon missed a popup to left field the day before and I was laughing at him, and the next day I dropped a popup.”

Girardi’s take on the dropped popup: “I’ve seen it happen twice and both of them were under my managerial watch, so it must be me. He’s as good on popups as I’ve ever seen.”

Andruw Jones has four home runs in two days. Surely he’d rather keep playing than take an All-Star break. “Not really,” he said. “Not after yesterday. I barely made it today.”  I thought he would say no way also but he said he was tired and looking forward to the break.

After throwing a lot of pitches early, Ivan Nova admitted that he didn’t think he’d be able to pitch past the fifth inning tonight. Instead, he started getting some quicker innings and gave the Yankees six innings with 10 strikeouts. “I wanted to keep pitching all day,” he said. “But (Girardi) said that I threw too many pitches.”  You have to love the competiveness and toughness of this guy.

This was Nova’s second double-digit strikeout game of the year. He said it’s beacuse of being aggressive more than anything else. “I’m getting aggressive, trying to get ahead in the count,” he said.

Sloppy defense behind him and a lot of men on base tonight, but Nova never let the Red Sox take the lead after that two-run first inning from the Yankees. “He overcame some things tonight and I think that’s a sign of maturity,” Girardi said.

Robinson Cano’s ninth-inning double extended his hitting streak to 15 games, tying Jeter for the Yankees longest streak of the season. He’s hitting .393 with five home runs and 16 RBI during the streak.  He has been on an unbelievable streak and now your seeing the real Cano, he was hitting terrible the first couple of months of the season.

Mark Teixeira hit .348 with two doubles, two homers, seven runs and 10 RBI during this road trip.

Alex Rodriguez tripled for the first time since April 21, 2010 in Oakland. This was only his fourth triple since the start of the 2007 season.

Yankees postgame news and notes after a tough loss

The New York Yankees lost this afternoon to the New York Mets 3-2.  Here are some news and notes from after the game.  Derek Jeter is headed to Cleveland after he returns to the team, he was off about three weeks with an injured calf.  Jeter needs six more hits to reach 3000.

Phil Hughes will start Wednesday in Cleveland he is jumping right into Ivan Nova's spot in the rotation.  Nova was optioned down to AAA Scranton earlier in the day.  The Yankees did discuss several options but it came down to sending Nova down or going with a six man rotation.  Girardi sent him down because he didn't want to mess with Burnett and Sabathia's schedule.  Girardi said this about Nova "I think he handled it like a man and a professional.  I think he will go about it the right way."

Teixeira was not selected to the All Star Team.  That was a suprise to me and not in a snotty way but a firm way he said he doesn't want to be in the HR derby if he isn't in the All Star Game.  That is just a feeling of his and not meant to be mean or mad because he didn't get in.  It was a hard choice for the Yankees.  Larry Rothschild the pitching coach said it was hard but a good one to have to make.  They briefly discussed putting Nova in the bullpen.  I thought about that a couple of weeks ago, they feel that would hurt his development, he is a starting pitcher and that is what he needs to do.

“In a lot of other places he wouldn’t be out of the rotation, but because guys are throwing so well, it just happens,” Girardi said. “He’s not the first guy that has thrown the ball extremely well and has had to go down… Going into spring training would you have said we had an excess of starting pitching? I probably would have said no, but the guys have thrown great. This kid, he’ll be back at some point. We know that.”

All around the Yankees clubhouse, the team seemed to feel badly for Nova. But they also seemed to understand the situation. Every option came with its positives and negatives, but the Yankees wanted to get Phil Hughes back, they wanted to keep all of their veterans in the rotation, and they wanted to keep Nova on an every-five-days schedule.  This information is coming from Chad Jennings of the Journal News.

“It sucks the moves that correspond with it,” Hughes said. “I feel bad for Nova, but I’m real excited to get back. I’m ready, and I feel up for it.”

Rivera had converted 26 straight saves against the National League.  That includes two in the World Series.  It was tied for the second longest streak of interleague.  Troy Percival had 26 and Eric Gagne had 29.

Girardi is hopeful of Nunez returning tomorrow even with Jeter coming back.  The Yankees have their whole infield on the All Star team other then Teixeira.  Teixeira said it is tough in the AL because of so many good first baseman.  He said he would be spending time with his family, he didn't seem that upset about it.  CC Sabathia was the other guy that didn't get in that was kind of a suprise.  He is looking forward to the three days off though and isn't uspet at all.  Dave Robertson is the other name that everyone is talking about that it would of been nice if he made it.  He didn't though unless their is an injury.

The Yankees will open up a three game series in Cleveland tomorrow with A.J. Burnett on the mound.  They will try and start a new winning streak and Jeter will resume his chase for 3000.  He is six hits shy of that mark and will have these three games before returning home for four against the Tampa Bay Rays.  It will then be the All Star Break.

Grapefruit League Game 9-Yankees at Tigers

The New York Yankees are traveling to Lakeland today to play the Detroit Tigers. Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes will both be pitching tomorrow. Here are some morning notes and the Yankees lineup. Alex Rodriguez had a update on his situation with meeting with the federal investigators. Here is what he said "They're working to schedule something that allows me to cooperate, and get my work in." Alex Rodriguez would prefer for the meeting to take place in Tampa and the Yankees have a off day on Monday so that should work but we will see. A-rod said he is looking forward to hearing from his lawyers sooner then later and is looking forward to getting this behind him. He said "I think the key thing to remember about this, it is a investigation about someone else. I don't really focus on that, I am focused on our team and Boston on Opening Day." He also added that his hip feels good and that he is not trying to overdo it this spring. He will have to see surgeon Mark Philippon and take some picture of the hip at some point in the future. He doesn't think that will happen until the All Star break or at some point when the Yankees are out west. Yankees Lineup: Granderson(CF) Johnson(DH) Teixeira(1B) Cano(2B) Thames(RF) Gardner(LF) Rivera(C) Vazquez(3B) Pena(SS) I will have some more later on from Joe Girardi this morning. The game is not televised but I will have a recap and any other notes later on today also so check back for all the action taking place today in Yankees Land.

Rays at Yankees

The New York Yankees will take on the Tampa Bay Rays in game 3 of the 4 game series. The Yanks took a doubleheader yesterday by the scores of 4-1 and 11-1. Chad Gaudin takes the mound today against David Price. The Yankees start today 9 games ahead of Boston for first in the AL EAst and 6 1/2 ahead of Anaheim for homefield advantage. It appears they pretty much have everything clinched so the only real drama left is when will Derek Jeter break Lou Gehrig's all time hits record, it could be tonight. He needs 3 to tie and 4 to break it. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via Peter Abraham. The Yankees are at their high water mark for the season at 39 games over 500. They haven't been at 40 over since they ended the 2004 season at 101-61. Tampa has just fallen out of really quickly losing 6 straight and 7 out of 8 and also losing Carlos Pena for the year yesterday. Alex Rodriguez is 10 of his last 20 with 8 rbi's in his last 8 games. He is now batting a season best 282. Melky Cabrera has heated up again batting 413 in his last 13 games with 5 xbh and 10 rbi's. He is now batting 281 with a 340 on base percentage. Phil Hughes has not allowed a run in his last 12 1/3 innings. Is it possible he could stay in this role and they go out and get another pitcher. I doubt it as they have said all along he is a starter also. Mo has converted 39 of 40 and 35 in a row. The Yankees pitching held Tampa Bay to 2 runs on 19 hits in 2 games yesterday and they struck out 23. The Yankees are 21-4 in their last 25 home games. They are 47-20 at home, 41-13 with A-rod. It is amazing that 2 of those losses were to the lowly Nationals. The Yankees are 10-1 in games CC Sabathia has started since the all star break. If you were looking for a true ace you got one. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(DH) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Swisher(RF) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Hairston(SS)

Oakland A's at New York Yankees

The New York Yankees begin a 4 game set with the Oakland A's tonight at the stadium. CC Sabathia will be on the mound against local product Vin Mazzaro, he hails from Rutherford and will have plenty of friends and family on hand. Rajah Davis will have plenty of support also as he is from the area. Here are the pregame notes and lineups via Peter Abraham of the Journal News. The Yankees are 6-0 since the All Star break thanks to a 2.17 era. The pitchers have only allowed 13 runs and 44 hits over 54 innings. Pitching is always the key for any team and it really does win. The Yankees have only outscored the opposition by a score of 23-14 in their 6 game winning streak. They have played three one run games and two, two run games. This bodes well as it is how you win in the postseason. Mo has converted 97 of 101 save chances since April 21, 2007. He has not allowed a run in his last 15 appearances which spans 14 2/3 innings. He has given up 4 hits while striking out 15 in that stretch. His era dropped from 3.38 to 2.18. I guess he is still pretty good huh, so much for his demise. Phil Hughes has a 0.81 era in 16 relief appearances. He has allowed no runs in his last 14 appearances. He has struck out 22 in his last 17 2/3 innings. The Yankees are 7-1 against Oakland over the last 2 seasons outscoring them 38-25. Brian Bruney has to get it going, his last 8 appearances he has allowed 11 hits, 8 earned runs, 8 walks, 6 strikeouts and 3 homeruns. Right handers are hitting 345 against him this season. Nick Swisher has 6 errors in RF, only Justin Upton of Arizona has more and he has 7. Melky is 2 for 20 since the break and is batting 223 since June 1st with a 299 obp and 15 rbi's. I guess Brett Gardner got his job back for now. A-rod is 6 for his last 18 with 2 homeruns, 5 rbi's, 4 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. The Yankees have the best record in baseball since he came back at 44-22. Yankees lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Hinske(RF) Gardner(CF) Oakland lineup: Davis(RF) Cabrera(SS) Hairston(CF) Holliday(LF) Garciaparra(1B) Suzuki(C) Cust(DH) Crosby(3B) Ellis(2B)

Yanks go for 5 in a row

The New York Yankees will take on the Baltimore Orioles tonight from the stadium. Sergio Mitre will be on the mound making his Yankees debut. He hasn't pitched in the majors since Sept 2007, he missed all of last year with Tommy John surgery and then was suspended 50 games to start this year for PEDS, he claimed it was a mistake, something he took at GNC but anyway here he is. He is 10-23 in his career with a 5.36 era. Here are the pregame notes and lineup from Peter Abraham. The Yankees are 30-16 at home this year, 24-9 in their last 33 games at home. The Yankees are 42-22 since A-rod came back which is the best record in the major leagues over that stretch. The Yankees team era is 1.50 since the all star break. The Yankees have only scored 11 runs since the all star break. Melky Cabrera is only batting 230 since June 1st and is 2 of 13 since the break. Mo and Phil Hughes didn't pitch last night so they will be ready to go for tonight. The Orioles are 1-13 in divisional road games this year and 15-30 overall away from Camden Yards. Brett Tomko was DFA'D to make room on the roster for Sergio Mitre. He is in the rotation for good for now but I bet the Yankees make a trade for a Washburn or Cliff Lee or someone like that in the next 9 days. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(DH) Posada(C) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Ransom(3B)

Game 88: Yankees at Angels

Here are the pregame notes and lineup via Peter Abraham. The Yankees will try and salvage the final game of this series, roadtrip and the first half before the all star break. The Yankees will be off until Friday after today when they start a 9 game homstand with Detroit, Oakland and Kansas City. The Yankees really struggle with the Angels and need to get a win so they don't have to sit around for a few days and think about it. They have been playing so well but the first two games the pitching has been horrible and today the Yanks have their ace going so hopefully that will change. They have a rested Mo and Hughes also which is a good thing. Game 88: Yankees at Angels Posted using ShareThis
