New York Mets outslug the St. Louis Cardinals

 

The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.  The game took place at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida and the final score was 8-5.  Taijuan Walker started for the Mets and he pitched very well.  Francisco Lindor and Tomas Nido led the offensive charge.  Lindor had two hits and four RBI and Nido had three hits and an RBI. 

Walker pitched four innings giving up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.  Walker picked up his first win of the spring.  Jerry Blevins pitched a perfect inning, Corey Oswalt pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up five hits and five runs with a walk and a strikeout and Trevor Hildenberger pitched to one batter and struck him out.  Daniel Zamora pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk and he earned his second save of the spring. 

Carlos Martinez started for the Cardinals and he didn’t pitch very well.  He pitched three innings giving up five hits and five runs with two walks and a strikeout.  He took his second loss of the spring.   Evan Kruczynski pitched to one batter and got him out, Thomas Parsons pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and two runs with a walk and Andrew Miller pitched an inning giving up a hit.  Giovanny Gallegos pitched an inning giving up two hits and he struck out two, Matthew Liberatore pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up a hit and an unearned run with a walk and three strikeouts.  Jesus Cruz pitched to one batter and struck him out. 

Brandon Nimmo drew two walks, Lindor had two hits and four RBI and Michael Conforto had a hit and drew a walk.  Johneshwy Fargas had a hit, Pete Alonso had a hit and an RBI and Patrick Mazeika had a hit and drew a walk.  J.D. Davis had a hit, Nido three hits and an RBI and Brandon Drury an RBI.  Alonso and Nido each hit a double and Fargas hit a triple.  Nido and Lindor each hit a homerun and the Mets were 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base.  Lindor was caught stealing. 

Matt Carpenter drew a walk, Dylan Carlson had a hit and Evan Mendoza had a hit and an RBI.  Delvin Perez had a hit, Edmundo Sosa had a hit and Jose Rondon drew a walk.  John Nogowski had a hit and drew a walk, Max Moroff had a hit and two RBI and Scott Hurst had a hit and two RBI.  Mendoza and Perez each hit a double and Moroff and Hurst each hit a homerun.  The Cardinals were 0-2 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.  Mendoza committed an error. 

In the bottom of the first Alonso hit an RBI double to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the second Nido hit a solo homerun to push the lead to 2-0.  In the bottom of the fourth Drury reached on a fielder’s choice and a run scored extending the Mets lead to 3-0.  Lindor hit a grand-slam and it was 7-0 Mets.  In the sixth Moroff hit a two-run homerun cutting the lead to 7-2.  Mendoza hit an RBI double and it was a 7-3 game.  In the eighth Hurst hit a two-run homerun to make it 7-5.  In the bottom of the eighth Tovar reached on a fielder’s choice pushing the lead to 8-5 and that was the final score. 

The Mets will be off on Saturday and take on the Nationals in West Palm Beach on Sunday.

New York Mets lose to the Atlanta Braves


The New York Mets were defeated by the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 6-2.  Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and he pitched well.  Pete Alonso, Robinson Cano and Tomas Nido led the offense with two hits each. 

deGrom pitched six innings giving up six hits and three runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.  deGrom lost his seventh game of the season.  Wilmer Font pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Robert Gsellman pitched an inning giving up three hits and three runs with two strikeouts and Stephen Nogosek pitched an inning with a strikeout. 

Mike Soroka pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and two runs with four strikeouts.   Anthony Swarzak pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one, A.J. Minter pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out two and Luke Jackson pitched an inning with a strikeout. 

Alonso had two hits and an RBI, Cano had two hits and Todd Frazier had a hit.  Dom Smith had a hit, Nido had two hits and an RBI and J.D. Davis had a hit.  Alonso hit a homerun and the Mets were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Rosario committed an error. 

Ronald Acuna Jr. had a hit, Freddie Freeman had two hits and drew two walks and Josh Donaldson had an RBI.  Nick Markakis had two hits, Austin Riley had two hits and two RBI and Johan Camargo had a hit and three RBI.  Soroka had a hit, Markakis and Camargo each hit a double and Riley hit a homerun and the Braves were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Acuna Jr. and Freeman each had a stolen base. 

In the second Riley hit a two-run homerun to give the Braves a 2-0 lead.  In the third Donaldson hit a sac fly to push the lead to 3-0.  In the fourth Alonso hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 3-1.  In the seventh Nido hit an RBI single and the lead was cut to 3-2.  In the eighth Camargo hit a three-run double to extend the lead to 6-2 and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two on Saturday and then finish the series on Sunday.

New York Mets lose a close one to the San Diego Padres


The New York Mets were defeated by the San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon.  The game took place at Petco Park in San Diego, California and the final score was 3-2.  Wilmer Font who the Mets just picked up made the start and he pitched well, the bullpen wasn’t bad.  Jeff McNeil and Tomas Nido each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Font pitched four innings and he gave up three hits and two runs with a strikeout.  Robert Gsellman pitched two innings giving up a hit and he struck out three, Tyler Bashlor lost his first game and he pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a walk and two strikeouts and Drew Gagnon pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Matt Strahm pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up six hits and two runs with a walk and seven strikeouts.  Gerardo Reyes pitched 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and Kirby Yates pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts and he picked up his 15th save of the season. 

McNeil had tow hits, Amed Rosario had a hit and an RBI and Michael Conforto drew a walk.  J.D. Davis had a hit, Brandon Nimmo had a hit and drew a walk and Nido had two hits and an RBI.  Nimmo and McNeil each hit a double and Nido hit a homerun.  The Mets were 2-5 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.  Conforto had a stolen base and Cano committed an error.  Nido had a pickoff. 

Franmil Reyes had a hit and an RBI, Manny Machado had a hit and Eric Hosmer had a hit and an RBI.  Hunter Renfroe had a hit and an RBI, Manuel Margot drew a walk and Strahm had a hit.  Strahm hit a double and Renfroe and Hosmer each hit a homerun.  The Padres were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.  Margot had a stolen base and was picked off. 

In the first Rosario hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the second Nido hit a solo homerun to push the Mets lead to 2-0.  In the bottom of the second Hosmer hit a solo homerun cutting the lead to 2-1.  In the bottom of the third Reyes hit an RBI single to tie the game at two.  In the seventh Renfroe hit a solo homerun giving the Padres a 3-2 lead and that would be the final score. 

The Mets lost two out of three in this series and will be off on Thursday.  They will begin a three-game series with the Marlins at home on Friday night.
