Yankees lose to the Jays as they squander many chances

The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 5-3 tonight.  The story of the game was all the missed chances the Yankees had.  They had bases loaded and no outs and didn't score and in the eighth inning had bases loaded and one out and couldn't score with Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher up.  The one concern for the Yankees right now is that if they don't hit homeruns they don't score runs.  Freddy Garcia didn't have his best stuff but battled through five innings and gave them a chance to win the game.

Garcia walked five guys and that was his main problem, the control.  He did strike out six and only gave up three runs.  Dave Robertson had a chance to get out of the sixth inning with the score only 3-2 Jays but he made a throwing error into centerfield and the Jays scored twice that inning to take a 5-2 lead.  The Yankees only managed to score one more run on Robinson Cano's second solo homerun of the game.  It was his eighth of the season.

The Yankees remain in first place by three games in the loss column over the Tampa Bay Rays and four over the Jays.  The Red Sox continue to struggle at 11-14 although they have played a lot better lately.  The Yankees and Jays will play game two of three tomorrow afternoon.  A.J. Burnett will make the start.

Yankees vs. Blue Jays-Game 23

The New York Yankees will begin a three game series with the Toronto Blue Jays tonight.  It is a 7:05 game from the Bronx.  Freddy Garcia makes the start against Ricky Romero.  Here ate quick notes and the lineup.
Yanks lineup:Derek Jeter, Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, Andruw Jones(dh), Curtis Granderson, Russell Martin, Brett Gardner.
Francisco Cervelli is back, he will be activated before the game.  Gustavo Molina will be sent down to AAA.
Robinson Cano and Arod were the first two out today for early BP according to Jack Curry.  That isn't a coincidence.
Freddy Garcia will try and make it seven straight quality games for the Yankee starters.  They have been very good so far and the bullpen not as good as thought.  If the bullpen gets going watch out.

Yankees defeat White Sox behind Bartolo Colon

The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox last night by the score of 3-1.  Bartolo Colon continues to impress pitching eight innings giving up one run, walking one and striking out seven.  It was his longest outing since 2007.  Mariano Rivera pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save of the season.  He had blown his two previous save oppurtunities but looked like his usual self in this one.

The offense didn't do much again but Robinson Cano hit a first inning three run homerun and it stood up.  Derek Jeter had a hit as he continues his march towards 3,000 hits.  Mark Teixeira left the game early due to a sore shoulder, he injured it diving for a ball on Tuesday but should be ok to go tonight.  The two teams will play the last game of a four game series tonight weather permitting.

The Yankees got some news on Phil Hughes but it still isn't conclusive.  He may have thoracic outlet syndrome which is a circulatory problem.  He is going to head out to St. Louis and see a specialist and if he does have it for sure they will start a treatment program and it isn't known how long he will be out but he won't be back anytime soon.

According to Elias of Colons 26 strikeouts more then half of them have been called(14).  His ball just moves so well that it looks like a ball and freezes the hitter.  The other thing about him is he has great control.  Yankees starters have held their opponent to one run or less in their last four games which is good for a 0.95 ERA during that stretch.  The offense is struggling right now but the important thing is the pitching.  If the Yankees get good pitching for most of the year they are going to win most of their games.

Rivera has a save or win in each of the Yankees nine home games.  It is the fifth time in his career he has had eight saves before April 30th, he has never had more then eight.  Cano has homered in back-to-back games and four of his last five at home.  Francisco Cervelli is with Scranton Wilkes Barre AAA and went 1-4 last night, he is scheduled to catch again today and may be back over the weekend or next week.

C.C. Sabathia makes the start for the Yankees tonight.

Yankees offense mostly silent again as they lose to White Sox

The Yankees were able to score a couple of runs in tonights game.  They were on two solo homeruns by Robinson Cano and Brett Gardner.  Ivan Nova pitched a great 6 1/3 innings for the longest outing of his short career but Rafael Soriano gave up a two run homerun in the eighth inning to Paul Konerko and Brent Lillibridge becamse a household name.  Lillibridge made two game saving catches in the ninth off of A-rod and Cano that you have to see to believe.

Arod hit the ball to the wall and he caught it as he was crashing into the wall and then the Cano catch was even better as he dove for a sinking tailing liner down the line that would of won the game for the Yankees and brought pie to the face of Cano.  The Yankees became the last team in baseball to lose two in a row.

The Yankees are now 12-8 on the season and still in first place in the AL East by three games in the loss column.  It has been a tough two games but this one they feel they should of won and you just have to congratulate the White Sox because that kid who was a pinch runner in the eighth inning made two great catches.

The two teams will play game three of four tomorrow night with Bartolo Colon on the mound.

Yankees vs. White Sox-first of four

The NY Yankees take on the Chicago White Sox tonight at Yankee Stadium.  It is the first of four.  The Yankees are 12-6 and the Sox have lost 10 out of their last 11.  The Yankees were 4-2 against the White Sox last year.  Here are some quick notes and the lineup.
Phil Hughes had to cut his bullpen short today.  He had no pain but his arm still feels dead.  He was to see the Dr. this afternoon.  Hopefully it isn't anything structurally but we will see.  Joe Girardi and Hughes both said they are concerned.
Rafael Soriano played catch and said he is available.  They will try to avoid using Mo but will see how he feels.
Yankees Lineup:Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher, Jorge Posada, Russell Martin, Brett Gardner.

Yankees win a wild extra inning game in Baltimore

The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon by the score of 6-3.  It was a normal game for six innings as Freddy Garcia was cruising and the Yankees had a 3-0 lead, it got crazy in the seventh inning.  Joba Chamberlain gave up a two run homerun, Mariano Rivera came on in the eighth inning because Rafael Soriano was out with back spasms.  Rivera got bailed out on a nice running catch by Brett Gardner to end the inning.  Rivera blew his second straight save in the ninth inning but the winning run was thrown out at home plate by Robinson Cano.  The Yankees had a chance for the lead in the tenth but Derek Jeter got thrown out at homeplate to end that inning.

Boone Logan got a win and Buddy Carlyle closed out the game.  The Yankees after a 40 minute rain delay took the lead in the eleventh inning with some help from the Orioles who committed two errors in the inning.  Cano started it with a double and stole third when they tried to pick him off of second base.  He scored on a groundout by Russel Martin that the shortstop threw into right field after a diving stop.  He was going for the double play that I don't think he would of had.  The Yankees scored two more runs after that and they closed it out in the eleventh.

It was the Yankees third straight win and they finished their roadtrip at 3-1.  They will now take on the White Sox in a four game series at Yankee Stadium.  A.J. Burnett will pitch on Monday night.  Phil Hughes is scheduled to make a rehab start on Thursday.

Rivera has blown two straight saves but in this game didn't get any help from the umpire who had a couple of questionable ball and strike calls.  Rivera still gave up the double to Brian Roberts with two outs to tie the game though.

There were no incidents after the plunking of Martin last night.  It will be interesting to see if the occasion arises later in the year if the Yankees will remember that and not let it go.  The way Martin is playing I could see the Yankees extending him and trying to package either Jesus Montero or Austin Romine who are both playing well in the minors for a pitcher.

Yankees at Orioles-Easter Sunday Matinee

The New York Yankees take on the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon in the second game of what is now a two game series.  The first game was washed away by rain.  Freddy Garcia will be on the mound against Jake Arrietta.  Here is the Yankees lineup.

Yankees Lineup:Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher, Jorge Posada, Russell Martin, Brett Gardner.

The Yankees will try to make it three wins in a row and sweep this brief two game series.  The Yankees will head home after the game and begin a four game series against the White Sox tomorrow night.  The game is on the YES network at 1:30PM.

Everyone enjoy your Easter Holiday, those are that celebrating and the rest enjoy your Sunday Afternoon.  I will have postgame recap and news and notes later on tonight.

Yankees batter Orioles

The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles Sat. night 15-3.  The Yankees hit five homeruns to add to their ML leading total.  They now have hit 35.  Sabathia earned his first win.
Sabathia pitched eight strong innings.  His only blemish was a three run homeruns by Adam Jones.  Buddy Carlyle pitched the ninth inning.
There was drama at the end of the game.  Russell Martin hit two homeruns and then was drilled in the upper back.  The Yankees did not retaliate but were visibly upset.  It will be interesting to see what happens.  Yanks/Orioles at 130 tomorrow.
