New York Yankees notes on a busy Friday

The Yankees reportedly signed Chien Ming Wang to a deal, Jon Heyman was reporting that. There has been nothing official from the Yankees though, it would seem to serve as AAA depth but it could also be possible that if he is pitching well enough the Yankees can trade from their strength pitching and get their biggest need which is hitting.
Derek Jeter worked out today and felt good, Brian Cashman meeting with reporters today said that it is more then day-to-day it is hour to hour with him. He said that they will see how he feels when he gets to the park tomorrow and go from there. If he feels great he may play in a minor league game, if not it may just be a workout for him.

Phil Hughes pitched three innings in a minor league game today giving up six hits and three runs with two of them being earned. He struck out three and threw 57 pitches with 34 being strikes. He needs to be stretched out more and can conceivably start on April 6th but the Yankees may hold him out an extra week, he may start the season the disabled list, we will have to see where he is after next week.

Travis Hafner was 2-5 today with a double, homerun and drew two walks in a minor league game. Hiroki Kuroda pitched seven innings giving up seven hits and no runs with no walks and five strikeouts. He threw 88 pitches with 65 being strikes in a minor league game. Francisco Cervelli caught him and was 1-4 with a single and drew a walk.

Cashman said that Clay Rapada will definitely start the season on the disabled list. He threw 15 fastballs today in a bullpen and felt good but he has a ways to go before he is ready to pitch in a major league game. Vidal Nuno is a lefty who has opened some eyes and the Yankees are still talking about according to Cashman. He could possibly make the team out of camp. Brennan Boesch is a guy who was scratched today with soreness in his ribcage. The Yankees don’t think it is anything serious and no tests are planned right now. They will see how he feels tomorrow and then move forward from there.

Mustelier is still making a case to make the team, he had a good day and his spring average is up to 313. He is a guy who has the potential to hit it is more about his defense. Ben Francisco will most likely make the team as the right handed hitting outfielder, he had the go ahead RBI single today in the eighth inning and has had a good spring. Dan Johnson had an opportunity this spring but made an error today and his average is only 063 with four errors. He didn’t make the most of his opportunity.

The Yankees were already going to honor the victims of Sandy Hook on Opening day. MLB announced all the teams will do the same for opening day. They will all wear a ribbon and their will be a pre game moment of silence.

New York Mets notes of an off day in camp

Zach Wheeler pitched in a minor league game on Monday. He gave up one hit in three innings of work during a minor league game. He said on twitter that it felt good to be back in a game, felt great. This was his first game action since suffering an injury on February 27th
Travis d’Arnaud is expected to start in AAA Las Vegas even though he is still in camp. He is having a great spring batting 345 with a 412 on base percentage. Any player on the 40 man roster who is in big league camp and gets hurt within 15 days of opening day is subject to the ML disabled list. He would then be accruing service time. He is within that time frame, so if he gets hurt it would not benefit the Mets but they are taking that risk because they think he will benefit from being with the major league staff.

Matt Harvey pitched well on Monday. He now has 24 strikeouts in 18 innings this spring. Ruben Tejada after going 0-3 is 3-34 this spring. I don’t make too much out of spring stats but that is pretty bad for their shortstop.

There has been nothing announced yet but what is expected is Jon Niese to start on Opening day. Shaun Marcum and Matt Harvey will pitch the next two games after that. David Wright will be named captain officially pretty soon. It could happen before Opening day and he will become the fourth captain in team history. I don’t think it really matters because everyone knows he is the leader of the Mets and is the captain if it is put on his uniform or not.

Justin Turner hurt his ankle on Saturday and hopes to play in a game by Thursday. Wright insists he will be ready for Opening Day. If Daniel Murphy doesn’t play soon he could miss Opening Day.

The New York Yankees drop one to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1

Warren pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and two runs with a walk and a strikeout and he lost his second game of the spring. Chamberlain faced one batter and struck him out, Logan pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two and Shawn Kelley pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run with two walks and a strikeout. Josh Spence pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout and David Aardsma pitched a perfect inning striking out two.

Gardner had a hit, Melky Mesa drew a walk and Suzuki had a hit and an RBI. Suzuki hit a double and the Yankees were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left two men on base. Maruszak committed an error.

Kyle Kendrick started for the Phillies and picked up his first win of the spring. He pitched six innings giving up two hits and an unearned run. Kendrick struck out three, Mike Adams pitched an inning striking out one, Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect inning and Chad Durbin pitched an inning walking one and striking out one.

Jimmy Rollins had a hit and drew two walks, Michael Young had a hit and an RBI and Chase Utley had two hits. The Yankees had an off day but not for everyone

Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte pitched in a minor league game and Phil Hughes pitched in a simulated game. Francisco Cervelli caught Andy Pettitte. Hughes came through the game fine, he got hit in the back on a ground ball which was a scary moment but he was fine. He said he is working on being ready for the season and right now he is on track, we will have to wait and see what happens. Rivera threw two innings with a total of 31 pitches. He said he just wanted to stretch it out a little, he had four strikeouts. Pettitte pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up two runs on eight hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Pettitte said he threw about 80 pitches and will get up to 90-95 next time out. He said at this point the most important thing is getting the work in and being healthy which he is. He said he is just building up his stamina.
Hughes should appear in an actual minor league game on Saturday. The Yankees are keeping him lined up for April 7th which would be the first time they need a fifth starter, it gives him about an extra week to get ready.

It looks like AA Trenton will have an impressive outfield this season with Slade Heathcott, Tyler Austin and Ramon Flores. It is important to remember that with Hughes the Yankees can take their time because they have both David Phelps and Ivan Nova who could start. They will both be on the team, with one the fifth starter and the other as the long reliever. The Yankees really will have six good starters and more good arms in the minors. They are in good shape pitching wise and that will have to be what carries them with the injuries to their offense.

Kevin Youkilis hit his third homerun of the spring on Sunday and has his average up to 308. He is really hitting the ball well and will hope to carry that over into the start of the season. Melky Mesa who has a chance to make the team is really hitting well also. He hit a grand slam on Sunday and has three homeruns also during grapefruit league play. Eduardo Nunez had been struggling offensively but had two hits and two stolen bases on Sunday. It is important to note he has been much better defensively this spring, I guess it does help him to keep him just at shortstop. Brennan Boesch also had two hits, his first two as a Yankee.

Mark Teixeira apparently is injured worse then originally thought. He could be out longer but the Yankees are still hoping for the 8-10 weeks. They will have to see how he responds to rest and hope that is all that he needs. If he responds he will be back in May or June, if not he may need surgery and be lost for the season.

The New York Mets defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2

Oscar Taveras had two hits and an RBI, Daniel Descalso had a hit and Adron Chambers had a hit. Ronny Cedeno had two hits, Holliday and Adams each hit a double and the Cardinals were 2-4 with runners in scoring position. Adams hit an RBI double and Taveras hit an RBI single. Brown hit an RBI single in the seventh to give the Mets a 3-2 lead and that was the final score.
