The New York Mets defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday evening.  The game took place at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona and the final score was 5-2 Mets.  Dillon Gee started for the Mets and pitched very well.  The bullpen threatened to blow it but they didn't.  Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Andrew Brown and Anthony Recker all had a couple of hits.

The Mets swept the three game series.  They also completed a nine game road trip with a 6-3 record and will now return home on Friday to take on the Atlanta Braves.  The Mets will have a day off on Thursday.  They will play three against the Braves then four against the Cardinals and three against the Marlins in a long home stand.

The New York Yankees sweep a doubleheader and have a shutout of the day

The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago Cubs twice on Wednesday.  They played a day night doubleheader which took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.  The Yankees won game one 3-0 and game two 2-0.  It was a great day of pitching for the Yankees with Masahiro Tanaka dominating in game one and Michael Pineda pitching very well in game two.  The Yankees bullpen was able to close out the games without an issue.  The Yankees offense wasn't great but they were able to do enough.

Tanaka in game one pitched eight innings giving up two singles, no runs.  He walked one and struck out ten and earned his second victory of the season.  Pineda in game two pitched six innings giving up three hits and no runs.  He walked one and struck out three and earned his second win of the season.  In game one Shawn Kelley picked up his fourth save of the season giving up a hit and striking out one in one inning.  In game two the Yankees used David Phelps, Matt Thornton and Adam Warren.  Warren picked up his first career save after walking one in one inning.  Thornton gave up a hit and had a strikeout and Phelps gave up a hit and a walk in 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Yankees offense in the night game had two hits each from Beltran, Alfonso Soriano, Ichiro Suzuki and Scott Sizemore.  Sizemore also had an RBI.  Brett Gardner had a hit and an RBI, John Ryan Murphy who was just called up had a hit.  Derek Jeter in his return had a hit, Yangervis Solarte had a hit and drew a walk and Beltran hit a double.  The Yankees were 4-12 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.  In the fourth Gardner had an RBI single and in the fifth Sizemore had an RBI single to complete the scoring.

In the first game the Yankees only managed five hits.  Gardner had a hit, Beltran had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Brian McCann had a hit, Solarte drew two walks and Kelly Johnson had a hit.  Dean Anna had an RBI, Ellsbury and Gardner each hit a double and Beltran hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Ellsbury had a stolen base.  Beltran hit a solo homerun in the first to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Anna hit a sacrifice fly to increase the Yankees lead to 2-0 and in the fifth Ellsbury grounded out and a run scored.  It was a very odd play as their was catcher interference and at first Ellsbury went to first and Gardner went back to third.  I didn't even realize that there was a rarely used rule 8.02 c.  It states that if the ball is put in play the manager of the offense has the right to refuse the interference and accept the action of the play.  This is basically like in the NFL where you can decline a penalty, the Yankees did that in this case and a run scored in sacrifice of the out.  I would of done the same thing because in a low scoring game who knows if they would have scored that third run.  They didn't end up needing it in the end but you never know.

The Yankees completed their home stand at 6-3 and with a record of 9-6.  They have won four games in a row and are in first place in the AL East.  They will head to Tampa Bay to take on the Rays in a four game series beginning Thursday night.

New York Yankees news and notes following a long home stand

The New York Yankees just completed a nine game home stand with a 6-3 record.  They won their last two games in a double header  sweep of the Chicago Cubs and also shut them out in both games.  Michael Pineda and Masahiro Tanaka are pitching like aces even though they are the number four and five starters currently.  Here are some news and notes following the home stand.

Mark Teixeira has been on the disabled list since April 5th.  He will be playing three games in a rehab game on Thursday.  The plan is for him to rejoin the team on Sunday in Tampa Bay.  David Robertson is also progressing and the plan is for him to rejoin the team on Tuesday in Boston.

The Yankees have patched together an infield with the Teixeira injury and Jeter and Roberts being banged up.  They infield has done a good job especially defensively.  The Yankees are using guys like Dean Anna, Yangervis Solarte, Scott Sizemore, Kelly Johnson but they are doing a very good job.

The Yankees starters have been very good especially at the back end but what about the bullpen.  The pen has done a great  job especially with Robertson being down.  Shawn Kelley, David Phelps and Adam Warren have all recorded their first saves this season.  Warren was the latest one to do so on Wednesday night.  The Yankees had a question mark in the bullpen at the beginning of this year.  Joe Girardi doesn't feel that way right now, the bullpen has been outstanding.

The Yankees offense so far this season hasn't been great.  It will surely get better as the weather warms up and hopefully the Yankees get and remain healthy.  If the pitching is constant though the offense won't have to be that great most of the time.

The only downside in the doubleheader was that the Yankees pounded out 12 hits in the night game but only scored the two runs.  They have been struggling with men in scoring position early in the season.  I am sure that will get better as the season goes on.

The Yankees didn't have to overuse their bullpen today and they start a four game series in Tampa with a pretty fresh pen.  That is a big key as I am sure they will want to use the pen in Tampa for some big outs.  Tanaka has struck out 28 batters in his first three starts which goes right past Al Leiter and his record for a Yankees rookie pitcher.

Carlos Beltran was the AL player of the week last week.  He hit a homerun in the first game on Wednesday.  How about this stat, the Yankees bullpen has started the season with seven straight saves without a blown one to start this season.  They tied their own record set in the 1970's.  They broke that record with a save in the night game of the doubleheader.

Derek Jeter was back in the night game of the doubleheader and seemed to be fine.  He has downplayed the injury in typical Jeter fashion but it does seem like it was more the Yankees being cautious then him being really hurt.  It was good to see him back out at short.

The Yankees will now start a road trip that will go through division rivals Tampa Bay and Boston.  The Yankees are currently at 9-6 and in first place in the AL East.  Tampa has had major injury problems to their rotation and Boston is struggling right now but this is one tough division from top to bottom and should be a dog fight all season.
