Yanks win a laugher

The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox this afternoon by the score of 10-0. Sergio Mitre got the start and pitched brilliantly giving up 1 hit and no runs in 6 1/3 innings. He left the game with one out in the 7th after getting hit in the forearm, there was swelling and him and Joe Girardi are not sure if he will make his next start but they will see what happens in the next couple of days. Chad Gaudin came on to pitch 2 2/3 hitless and scoreless innings. The Yankees made a couple of really nice plays defensively to help Sergio Mitre also. The offense saw Derek Jeter get 3 hits as he is just on fire and Alex Rodriguez had 2 hits and 2 rbi's. One of his hits was a solo homerun. Johnny Damon had a hit and 2 rbi's, Hideki Matsui had 2 hits and a rbi. Nick Swisher had 2 hits and a rbi and Robinson Cano had 3 hits and 2 rbi's. Jerry Hairston had a hit and 2 rbi's. Jerry Hairston started in center field and then moved to shortstop late in the game. It is great to have a guy on the team that can play every position in the field other then pitcher and catcher although he has been the emergency catcher for the last couple of days. Jorge Posada is good to go for tomorrow according to Joe Girardi in the postgame. Joba Chamberlain will start tomorrow and go I guess 5 innings at most. Alfredo Aceves will be the caddy along with Dave Robertson. The Yankees will try and sweep the White Sox making up for losing 3 out of 4 to them in Chicago earlier in the year.

Whitesox at Yankees

The Yankees will play game 2 of the 3 game series today at 1 weather permitting. Sergio Mitre will take the mound against former Yankee Jose Contreras. Here are the lineups via the Lohud Yankees Blog. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Hairston(CF) Molina(C) White Sox Lineup: Podsednik(LF) Beckham(3B) Pierzynski(C) Konerko(1B) Thome(DH) Dye(RF) Rios(CF) Ramirez(SS) Nix(2B) Jorge Posada will have today off and then be back tomorrow as long as he played catch today fine. They finally came up with a contraption to help the finger. Brett Gardner hit off a tee the last 2 days and will rest today before resuming tomorrow. He still expects to start a rehab assignment next week and be back shortly after. Jerry Hairston Jr. is the emergency catcher for now, the rosters expand on Tuesday and the Yankees will have Francisco Cervelli back then as well as Ramiro Pena and some pitchers to caddy for Joba as they treat him like it is spring training and then get him built up by the end so he is ready for the playoffs. The Yankees 11th walkoff win yesterday was the most since 1978 when they had 12. Derek Jeter hit his 22nd career leadoff homerun last night putting him 2nd on the all time Yankees list behind Rickey Henderson who has 24. Phil Hughes finally got into a game last night and struck out the sides, he has a 1.23 era as a reliever and has struck out 48 in 36 1/3 innings. Johnny Damon is one homerun shy of his career high which was 24 in 2006, I think the Yankees are going to bring him back.

Yanks walkoff with win and Cano gets pie

The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox tonight by the score of 5-2 in 10 innings. The question of the night once again for the Yankees was who wants pie and Robinson Cano wanted it, he hit a 3 run walkoff homerun for the win. CC Sabathia got the start and was dominant and then hit a rough patch in the 7th innings. He gave up 2 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings. He also had 10 strikeouts. Phil Hughes pitched the 8th and struck out the heart of the order. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth inning 1-2-3 and Brian Bruney pitched the 10th inning 1-2-3. The offense once again wasn't getting the clutch hits. Johnny Damon and Melky Cabrera each had 2 hits, Johnny Damon had a solo homerun. Derek Jeter had a hit, A-rod had a hit and a walk. Hideki Matsui had a hit and a walk and Jose Molina had a hit. The Yankees are now 6 1/2 games ahead of the Red Sox for first place in the AL east depending on the outcome of the Sox game tonight which is currently in a rain delay tied at 5. The Yankees will send Sergio Mitre to the mound tomorrow against a starter that has still yet to be determined. The Yankees are also now currently 4 games ahead of the Angels for #1 seed and home field advantage thoroughout the playoffs. The Angels are currently losing and that could go to 4 1/2 or 3 1/2 with a Angels win.

White Sox at Yankees

The New York Yankees will take on the Chicago White Sox tonight from the stadium weather permitting. They will make every effort to play this game but I wouldn't expect it with the rain supposedly getting worse as the night goes on. It could be a long night in the Bronx. CC Sabathia against Mark Buehrle is the pitching matchup. Here are the pregame notes and linups as always via Peter Abraham and his Lohud Yankees Blog. I am going to put the Joba news first on here as now they have decided he needs to pitch every 5th day. Since the innings limit hasn't changed that means some games he will pitch less then 5 innings. I am guessing they will use Mitre and Gaudin as his caddies. The White Sox are 10-13 in their last 25 games and are 4 games out in the AL Central with 34 left to play. They are 1-4 in their last 5 games. CC is 5-0 with a 2.65 era in his last 5 starts. He has pitched 37 1/3 innings allowing 28 hits, 5 walks and 39 strikeouts. He has won 11 straight August decisions and is 33-9 with a 3.16 era in 51 career August starts. CC is 15-4 with a 3.77 era in 27 career starts against the White Sox. CC leads the AL in wins and innings to keep going with the CC theme. He is 8th in era and strikeouts, third in whip, third in opponents batting avg against and tied for fifth in opponents ops. CC hasn't seemed to mind pitching at Yankee Stadium going 5-2 with a 3.62 era. He has allowed 5 homers in 77 innings. This just says that if you are a good pitcher you can pitch anywhere and this is where the Yankees have the advantage because there guys are used to the stadium. Phil Coke since the all star break has a 8.10 era. Big Tex has 97 rbi's, he leads the AL, only Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard and Albert Pujols have more in the major leagues. The Yankees are 16-4 in their last 20 home games. Johnny Damon is 9 of his last 20 and is batting 288. Yesterday was one of only 5 games at home the Yankees haven't hit a homerun. This truly is a rare occurence. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Molina(C)

White Sox at Yanks pitching matchups

The New York Yankees will begin a 3 game series with the Chicago White Sox tonight at the stadium. The weather is looking terrible right now and doesn't look like it is going to be much better so who knows with that. It is supposed to rain tomorrow with Tropical Storm Danny passing by. Here are the pitching matchups for the series. Tonight- CC Sabathia vs Mark Buehrle Saturday- Sergio Mitre vs TBA Sunday- Joba Chamberlain vs Freddy Garcia Saturday a lot of people thought it would be Jake Peavy but he is pitching in AAA instead so it will not be him. Tonight is a good matchup but the Yankees seem to hit Buehrle historically and beat him. Joba will be on his normal rest so lets see if he can get it going.

Yanks lose series

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Texas Rangers today by the score of 7-2. A.J. Burnett got the start and was pretty dominating striking out 12 in 6 innings, he only gave up 2 hits but one was a 3 run homer. The real story though was the Yankees not being able to score with runners in scoring position. The Yankees were 2 -12 today with RISP and left 12 runners stranded on base today. Phil Coke came on in relief of Burnett and gave up a 3 run homerun after a single and a bunt that he screwed up. Phil Coke went to field it when clearly A-rod was right there to get it and throw the guy out at first and then bam the 3 run homerun. I think that at times Joe Girardi likes Phil Coke too much and he really should only be used sparingly as a 1 or 2 batter guy against lefties. He gives up way too many homeruns. Dave Robertson gave up a solo homerun in 1 1/3 innings of work, he also struck out two. Alfredo Aceves pitched a scoreless inning with 1 strikeout. The offense was led by Mark Teixeira who had both rbi's. Johnny Damon had 2 hits and 2 walks. A-rod and Melky Cabrera had a hit and a walk a piece. The Yankees just couldn't manage to get the big hit when they had the pitcher on the ropes and although the final score looks worse then it was they really could of had a big lead early on and that would of changed the game. The Yankees start a 3 game series with the White Sox tomorrow night and will try to get back on the winning track.

Rangers at Yankees a Matinee Rubber Game

The New York Yankees take on the Texas Rangers today at 1:05 on the YES network. This is the last game of the 3 game series with the Rangers winning the first on on Tuesday night and the Yankees winning last night. A.J. Burnett is on the mound looking to get back on track. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via Peter Abraham. If the Yankees win today that would give them wins in 11 of the last 12 series they have played. A.J. Burnett is 0-3 with a 6.32 era in his last 5 starts. He has allowed 36 hits and 14 walks in his last 31 1/3 innings. Melky Cabrera is batting 209 with a 258 on base percentage since Brett Gardner went on the DL. There have been 191 homeruns in 61 games at Yankee Stadium this season, last year there were 160 in 81 games. Phil Hughes has only pitched 8 innings this month. This doesn't make sense to me as you want to get his innings up so he can be a starter without too much restriction next year. Hideki Matsui is 14 of his last 40 with 18 rbi's over 9 games. The Yankees are 51-15 when they score first. The Yankees are a major league best 42-19 at home. Robinson Cano is 8 of his last 17 with 4 rbi's and 4 xbh. He is 16 of 36 for his career in stolen base attempts. I think someone needs to tell him just stay where you are. Nick Swisher is 12 of 46 with 8 xbh and 7 rbi's. He hasn't drawn a walk in 49 plate appearances which is a long long time for him. Michael Young has a 13 game hitting streak which is the longest current streak in the majors. He is batting 436 with 14 rbi's and 6 xbh during the streak. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Molina(C)

Andy is Dandy as Yanks top Rangers

The New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers tonight by the score of 9-2. Andy Pettitte went 7 strong innings giving up 2 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. Andy Pettitte with the win which was his 189th as a Yankee tied Lefty Gomez for 3rd on the alltime Yankees wins list. Brian Bruney pitched a scoreless 8th giving up a couple of hits and Phil Coke pitched a perfect ninth. A.J. Burnett will be on the hill tomorrow trying to get back in a grooved after a awful outing his last time out in Boston. Jorge Posada will not catch him tomorrow but that is because he is banged up not because of the percieved problems between the two. The offense got started early with a 3 run homer for Jorge Posada. Jerry Hairston had a solo homerun and then the Yankees really broke it open in the 7th with 5 runs, Derek Jeter had a 2 run single. Nick Swisher had a rbi double and Mark Teixeira had a 2 run single. Hideki Matsui had a couple of hits to continue his hot hitting and A-rod had a single and walk. Melky Cabrera was the only Yankee to not have a hit. The offense has really been rolling lately and it is good to see. The Yankees will try and win the series tomorrow afternoon.

Rangers at Yankees

The New York Yankees will try to even this three game series tonight at 7:10PM on the Yes network and ESPN 2. Andy Pettitte will be taking the mound. The Yankees start tonight with a 6 game lead on the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via Peter Abrahams Lohud Yankees Blog. Robinson Cano hit his 20th homerun last night making it 6 Yankees which matches the 1961 and 2004 teams, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada have a chance to make it 7 or 8 Yankees. Derek Jeter snapped a streak of 113 plate appearances without a walk when he walked last night. Jeter has multiple hit games in 11 of his last 13 games. Hideki Matsui has 17 rbi's over his last 8 games. 8 of his last 13 hits have been for extra bases. 7 of them are homers. Andy Pettitte will be the 3rd starter in the playoffs. He is 2-1 with 2.82 era since the all star break. Over 44 2/3 innings he has allowed only 38 hits and struck out 47. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Swisher(RF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Hairston(LF) Cabrera(CF)

Bad Joba shows up and Yanks lose

The New York Yankees lost to the Texas Rangers tonight by the score of 10-9. Joba Chamberlain got the start and was bad giving up 7 runs in 4 innings with 9 hits and 3 walks allowed. The Yankees always tough right to the end especially at home scored 4 runs in the ninth but Melky Cabrera lined into a double play to end the game after Nick Swisher attempted to bunt and popped out. Chad Gaudin came on in relief of Joba and pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits. Damaso Marte pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings striking out two. The offense got off to a hot start with Hideki Matsui hitting a 2 run double and Jorge Posada hitting a 2 run homerun. The Yankees after all of that in the first inning didn't do much until the ninth. Derek Jeter, A-rod and Robinson Cano all had two hits and Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui also had another hit each. Melky Cabrera had a hit and Johnny Damon had a hit and walk. The one thing I don't get about this game is it was 10-9, 1st and second no outs and Nick Swisher up who is always trying to hit homeruns and he bunts and pops it up. I am sure Joe Girardi told him to bunt and this just didn't make sense. Nick Swisher isn't my favorite player but he could of ended the game with one swing and with the pressure on the pitcher he is very patient and could of taken pitches and maybe even walked. The Yankees will try and bounce back tomorrow with Andy Pettitte on the mound tomorrow.

Rangers at Yankees

The New York Yankees begin a 3 game series with the Texas Rangers tonight from Yankee Stadium. The game is at 7:05 on the YES network. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via the Lohud Yankees Blog at http://lhblogs.com. The Yankees are 27-9 since the all star break and have won 16 of their last 20. The Rangers have lost 4 of 6 and trail the Red Sox by 1 1/2 in the race for the wildcard. The Yankees are 4-2 against Texas this season. They are 27-12 against them over the last 5 seasons. Joba is pitching for the first time tonight since August 16th. He is 4-1 with a 3.35 era since the all star break. He is 1-1 with a 6.75 in his last 3 starts though, allowing 12 runs on 18 hits with 12 walks in his last 16 innings. Joba has a 7.11 career era against Texas in 3 starts with no record. Derek Jeter needs 20 more hits to tie Lou Gehrig for the franchise record. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Swisher(RF) Cabrera(CF) The Yankees lead the Angels by 2 games in the loss column for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. This is the only real race the Yankees are in as they have 38 games left, the Angels have 40. The two teams will meet 4 more times, once in a makeup game at Yankee Stadium and a 3 game series in Anaheim. The Yankees will try and get it but not at the expense of injurying or wearing out their players. This will be fun to keep an eye on, my guess is the Yankees will win it but it may just come down to the 4 head to head games and the Yankees need to show they can beat the Angels.

Pitching matchups for Rangers/Yankees

Tomorrow- Joba Chamberlain vs Kevin Millwood Wednesday- Andy Pettitte vs Derrek Holland Thursday- A.J. Burnett vs Dustin Nippert The Yankees are going to try and win this series but maybe they should tank it so the Rangers can take over the wildcard lead from the Red Sox. I am just joking of course, Joba will have had 9 days off by time he takes the mound so it will be interesting to see how he does and also now his mind is clear that he knows he only has 6 starts left. Andy Pettitte and A.J. Burnett will try and get back on track after shaky performances in Boston.

Yanks take series in Boston

The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox tonight by the score of 8-4. They won the series 2 games to one and have won 6 of their last 7 games against the Red Sox to build a 7 1/2 game lead in the AL East. The Yankees finished their 10 game, 3 city roadtrip at 7-3. CC Sabathia got the start and pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs, 3 earned although it could of easily been 2 with better defense. Phil Hughes came on to finish the seventh and complete the 8th giving up 1 hit with a strikeouts. Mariano came on in the ninth giving up a walk but had 2 strikeouts. The offense exploded for 5 homeruns off Josh Beckett. Derek Jeter hit a homerun on the first pitch he saw of the game. He also added a single. Hideki Matsui hit 2 homeruns, A-rod had a 2 run homer and a rbi groundout. Johnny Damon had a couple of hits, Big Tex had a hit and rbi and Robinson Cano had a solo homerun. Jose Molina contributed a hit. The Yankees will be off tomorrow and then open a 3 game series with the Texas Rangers who trail the Red Sox by 1 game in the wildcard race.

Yankees at Red Sox(The Rubber Game)

The New York Yankees will try and win the 3 game series with the Boston Red Sox tonight at 8 on ESPN. The Yankees also will be finishing a roadtrip where they are 6-3, 7-3 would be great and 6-4 isn't bad if they lose. CC Sabathia will go up against Josh Beckett in a marquee matchup. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via the Lohud Yankees Blog. The Yankees are 5-9 against the Red Sox this season being outscored 118-114. Derek Jeter is one hit away from 2,700 for his career. He is 16 of his last 29 and 19 of 39 on the roadtrip with 8 rbi's and 8 runs scored. Sabathia is 4-0 with a 2.35 era in his last 4 starts. He has pitched 30 2/3 innings allowing 20 hits, 5 walks and striking out 31. Sabathia is 32-9 with a 3.14 era in August in his career. Josh Beckett is 2-0 with 4.12 era in 4 starts against the Yankees this season. Boston has 20 homeruns in their last 8 games. David Ortiz has 5 homeruns in his last 8 games. Boston is 18-2 when he hits a homerun so CC don't give up a homerun to him. Nick Swisher has 18 of his 21 homeruns on the road. He has hit in 8 straight games with 5 runs scored, 7 rbi's. Yankee relievers in the last 2 games have allowed 7 innings, 11 hits, 9 earned runs and 3 homeruns. Of course this is Fenway Park and a lot of pitchers have bad days there. Check out weei.com to see what Jonathan Papelbon said about Billy Wagner. I would tell him to let the GM worry about trades and stuff and not him, of course he had to be classy and open his mouth as usual. Jason Giambi and Russ Ortiz were signed by the Colorado Rockies today. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Molina(C)
