New York Mets defeat the Baltimore Orioles in final spring tune up


The New York Mets defeated the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.  The game took place at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida and the final score was 9-7.  Zack Wheeler started for the Mets and he didn’t pitch very well.  Robinson Cano had three hits and Jeff McNeil and Amed Rosario each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Wheeler pitched three innings giving up five hits and five runs with two walks and two strikeouts.  Luis Avilan pitched to one batter and struck him out, Jeurys Familia pitched to two batters and got them both out with a strikeout and Robert Gsellman pitched two innings giving up two hits and he struck out one.  Seth Lugo pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with a strikeout, Edwin Diaz pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with three strikeouts and Matt Blackham pitched an inning with a walk. 

Brandon Nimmo had a hit, Peter Alonso drew a walk and David Thompson had a hit and an RBI.  Cano had three hits, Michael Conforto had an RBI and Wilson Ramos had a hit and an RBI.  Tomas Nido had a hit, McNeil had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk and J.D. Davis had a hit and an RBI.  Rosario had two hits and an RBI.  Dominic Smith had a hit and three RBI, Juan Lagares had a hit and Ramos, Cano and Rosario each hit a double.  Thompson, Davis and Smith each hit a homerun.  The Mets were 3-12 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. 

In the first Dwight Smith hit a solo homerun, Rio Ruiz hit an RBI double and Chris Davis hit a two-run homerun to give the Orioles a 4-0 lead.  In the second Rosario hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-1.  In the third Conforto hit an RBI ground out and Ramos hit a sac fly to cut the lead to 4-3.  In the third Smith hit a solo homerun pushing the Orioles lead to 5-3.  In the fifth McNeil hit a solo homerun and it was a 5-4 game.  In the seventh Davis hit a solo homerun tying the game at five.  In the bottom of the seventh Zach Vincej hit a sac fly to give the Orioles a 6-5 lead.  In the eighth Thompson hit a solo homerun tying the game at six.  In the bottom of the eighth Hanser Alberto hit an RBI single to give the Orioles a 7-6 lead.  In the ninth Smith hit a three-run homerun to give the Mets a 9-7 lead and that would be the final score. 

The Mets finished their spring with a 13-16 record and will head to Washington to take on the Nationals Opening Day on Thursday afternoon. 


New York Yankees lose final spring game in Washington


The New York Yankees were defeated by the Washington Nationals on Monday night.  The game took place at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. and the final score was 5-3.  Stephen Tarpley started for the Yankees and gave up his first runs of the spring.  The Yankees offense only managed five hits. 

Tarpley pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and two runs with a strikeout.  Zack Britton pitched to two batters and got them both out, Adam Ottavino pitched an inning with two strikeouts and Tommy Khanle pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and two runs with a walk and a strikeout.  Nestor Cortes Jr. pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with a walk and three strikeouts and Joe Harvey pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one. 

Brett Gardner had a hit, Mike Tauchman had a hit and drew a walk and Aaron Judge drew a walk.  Zack Zehner had a hit and drew a walk, Greg Bird had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Francisco Diaz had an RBI.  Troy Tulowitzki had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Bird, Zehner and Gardner each hit a double and Tulowitzki hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 0-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Wade had a stolen base. 

In the first Anthony Rendon hit a two-run homerun giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  In the third Tulowitzki hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the fourth Kurt Suzuki hit a sac fly to extend the Nationals lead to 3-1 and Brian Dozier hit an RBI single to make it 4-1.  In the sixth Bird hit an RBI double cutting the lead to 4-2.  In the bottom of the sixth Matt Adams hit a solo homerun making it a 5-2 game.  In the eighth Diaz hit a sac fly cutting the lead to 5-3 and that would be the final score. 

The Yankees finished their spring with a 17-10 record and will now have their season and home opener on Thursday afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles.  Masahiro Tanaka will make the start.

New York Mets double up the Washington Nationals


The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals on Sunday.  The game took place at First Data Field in Port St. Lucie, Florida and the final score was 8-4.  Tim Peterson started for the Mets and pitched a couple of good innings.  Robinson Cano and Michael Conforto each had two hits and Jeff McNeil had four RBI to lead the offense. 

Peterson pitched two innings giving up two hits and no runs with a walk and a strikeout.  Simeon Woods Richardson pitched an inning giving up a hit and three runs with two walks and a strikeout, Zach Lee pitched four innings giving up six hits and a run with two strikeouts and Casey Coleman pitched two innings giving up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts. 

Brandon Nimmo had a hit and drew two walks, McNeil had a hit, four RBI and drew a walk and Cano had two hits.  Peter Alonso had a hit, Conforto had two hits and an RBI and Wilson Ramos had a hit.  Juan Lagares had a hit and an RBI, McNeil hit a double, Alonso and Nimmo hit a triple and Lagares hit a homerun.  The Mets were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. 

In the first McNeil hit an RBI ground out and Conforto hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.  In the third Matt Adams hit a three-run homerun to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead.  In the bottom of the third Alonso hit into a double play and a run scored to tie the game at three.  In the fourth Drew Ward hit an RBI double to give the Nationals a 4-3 lead.  In the fifth Lagares hit a solo homerun trying the game at four.  In the sixth Lagares reached on a fielding error and the Mets took a 5-4 lead and McNeil hit a three-run double to push the Mets lead to 8-4 and that would be the final score. 

The Mets   record improved to 12-16 on the spring and they will head to Sarasota to take on the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. 

New York Yankees win final Florida spring game


The New York Yankees defeated by the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.  The game took place at CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida and the final score was 5-3.  James Paxton started for the Yankees and he pitched well.  Clint Frazier had three RBI and Diego Castillo had two hits to lead the offense. 

Paxton pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up six hits and two runs with a walk and five strikeouts.  Luis Cessa pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout, J.P. Feyereisen pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Daniel Alvarez pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout. 

Tyler Wade had a hit, Luke Voit had a hit and drew a walk and Greg Bird had an RBI and drew a walk.  Austin Romine drew a walk, Frazier had a hit, three RBI and drew a walk and Matt Lipka had a hit.  Brandon Wagner drew a walk, Castillo had two hits and an RBI and Castillo and Frazier each hit a double.  The Yankees were 2-9 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Lipka had a stolen base and Frazier and Voit each were caught stealing.  Castillo committed an error. 

In the fourth Tyler Austin hit an RBI double to give the Twins a 1-0 lead.  In the sixth Bird hit an RBI ground out and Frazier hit a three-run double to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.  In the sixth Ronald Torreyes hit an RBI double to cut the Yankees lead to 4-2.  In the seventh Castillo hit an RBI double to push the Yankees lead to 5-2.  In the bottom of the seventh Mitch Garver hit a sac fly to cut the lead to 5-3 and that would be the final score. 

The Yankees completed the Florida portion of their spring schedule and will head to Washington D.C. to take on the Nationals on Monday evening.  They will then be off on Tuesday and Wednesday before Opening Day on Thursday afternoon in the Bronx.
