New York Yankees defeat the Miami Marlins on ninth inning rally



The New York Yankees defeated the Miami Marlins on Friday night.  The game took place at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida and the final score was 3-2.  Nathan Eovaldi started for the Yankees and pitched ok, he gave up a lot of base runners but not a lot of runs.  Lane Adams and Brett Gardner each hit a homerun. 

Eovaldi pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and a run with four walks and three strikeouts.  Dellin Betances pitched to two batters and retired them both, Chasen Shreve pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk and Luis Cessa earned the win pitching an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout.  Nick Goody earned his second save of the spring pitching a perfect inning. 

Jose Fernandez started for the Marlins pitching four innings and giving up two hits and a run with seven strikeouts.  Craig Breslow pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Cody Ege pitched an inning giving up a walk and Brad Hand pitched a perfect inning.  Bryan Morris pitched an inning giving up a walk and he struck out one and A.J. Ramos pitched an inning giving up a  hit and two runs with a walk and two strikeouts.  He suffered his second loss of the spring and first blown save. 

Gardner had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, Aaron Hicks drew a walk and Adams had a hit and two RBI.  Austin Romine drew a walk, Ronald Torreyes had a hit and Gardner and Adams each hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 0-1 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.  Castro committed an error and Hicks had an outfield assist. 

Dee Gordon had a hit and drew a walk, Marcell Ozuna drew a walk and Christian Yelich had a hit.  Giancarlo Stanton had a hit and drew two walks, Justin Bour had a hit and Martin Prado had two hits.  Miguel Rojas drew a walk, J.T. Realmuto had two hits and an RBI and Cole Gillespie had a hit.  Luke Hechavarria drew a walk, Don Kelly had a hit and Chris Johnson had an RBI.  Yelich hit a double and the Marlins were 3-13 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.  Gordon was caught stealing. 

In the fourth Gardner hit a solo homerun to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the sixth Realmuto hit an RBI single to tie the game at one.  In the eighth Johnson hit a sac fly to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead.  In the ninth Adams hit a two run homerun giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play one more game on Saturday afternoon.  The Yankees will head home to New York after the game, workout at Yankee Stadium on Sunday and open the season on Monday afternoon. 

The New York Mets lose to the Chicago Cubs in Las Vegas


The New York Mets lose to the Chicago Cubs in Las Vegas

The New York Mets were defeated by the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night.  The game took place at Cashman Field in Las Vegas, Nevada and the final score was 5-1.  Paul Sewald started for the Mets and pitched well and a host of relievers pitched pretty well.  Lucas Duda led the offense with three hits. 

Sewald pitched three innings giving up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.  Jerry Blevins pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts, Chasen Bradford pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up three hits and three runs with one of them being earned and he struck out one and Erik Goeddel pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout.  Jim Henderson pitched an inning giving up a hit, Hansel Robles pitched an inning and a run and Addison Reed pitched an inning with a strikeout. 

David Wright had a hit, Yoenis Cespedes had a hit and Duda had three hits and an RBI.  Asdrubal Cabrera had a hit, Kevin Plawecki had two hits and Duda hit a double.  The Mets were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Bradford committed an error and Henderson had a pickoff. 

In the fourth Duda hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the fifth Zobrist hit an RBI single to tie the game at one.  Kris Bryant hit an RBI single to make it 2-1 Cubs.  Trevor Cahill hit a sac bunt and a run scored to make it 3-1 still in the fifth inning.  In the sixth Jorge Soler hit a sac fly to push the lead to 4-1 and in the eighth Yasiel Balaguert hit a solo homerun to make it 5-1 and that would be the final score. 

The Mets and Cubs will play one more game on Friday night and then the Mets will head to Kansas City  to open the season on Sunday night.  Matt Harvey will get the start for the Mets.

The New York Yankees finish their grapefruit league schedule losing both games of a spli squad



The New York Yankees were defeated twice on Thursday afternoon.  They lost 10-6 to the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida and they lost 9-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida.  Chad Green started the game against the Tigers and didn't pitch very well and Austin Romine led the offense with three hits and two RBI and Starlin Castro added a couple of hits.  In the home game Michael Pineda started and got hit around pretty hard.  The offense couldn't get much going as they only managed four hits. 

Green started the game against the Tigers and pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up six hits and six runs with five of them being earned.  He walked two and struck out four.  Tyler Webb pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up three hits and three runs with a walk and Conor Mullee pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with three strikeouts. 

Pineda  started the game against the Cardinals and pitched five innings giving up seven hits and six runs with four strikeouts.  Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts, Anthony Swarzak pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up four htis and three runs with a walk and Branden Pinder pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a walk.  Matt Tracy pitched an inning striking out two batters. 

Gary Sanchez had a hit and drew a walk, Castro had two hits and Romine had three hits and two RBI in the game against the Tigers.  Jorge Mateo had a hit and two RBI, Pete Kozma had a hit and Rob Refsnyder had a hit.  Chris Parmelee had two hits and an RBI, Tyler Austin drew a walk and Trey Amburgey drew a walk.  Juan Silva had a hit, Sanchez hit a double and Romine hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 3-13 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.  Amburgey was picked off. 

In the first Victor Martinez hit a two run homerun to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.  J.D. Martinez hit a solo homerun and it was 3-0 Tigers.  In the third Miguel Cabrera hit a fly ball and a run scored on a throwing error to make it 4-0 Tigers.  Romine hit a two run homerun in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2.  Martinez hit his second homerun of the game in the bottom of the fourth and it was 5-2 Tigers.  Ian Kinsler hit a solo homerun in the fifth to make it 6-2.  In the sixth a wild pitch scored a run and cut the lead to 6-3.  Parmelee hit an RBI single and the lead was cut to 6-4.  In the seventh Kinsler hit a sac fly to increase the lead to 7-4, Cabrera hit an RBI single making it 8-4 and Martinez hit his third homerun of the game to make it 10-4 Tigers.  In the ninth Mateo hit a two run single to cut the lead to 10-6 and that would be the final score. 

Aaron Hicks had a hit, Carlos Beltran had a hit and Brian McCann had a hit in the Cardinals game.  Eddy Rodriguez had a hit, Jonathan Diaz drew a walk and Lane Adams had an RBI.  Rodriguez hit a double and the Yankees were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base.  McCann and Puello each committed an error. 

In the second Stephen Piscotty hit a solo homerun to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Brandon Moss hit a solo homerun making it 2-0.  Piscotty hit his second homerun in the fourth and it was 3-0 Cardinals.  In the fifth Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a three run homerun to push the lead to 6-0.  In the seventh Tommy Pham hit a two run homerun making it 8-0 Cardinals.  Jedd Gyorko hit an RBI single and it was 9-0 Cardinals.  In the bottom of the eighth Adams hit a sac fly to make it 9-1 and that would be the final score. 

The Yankees finished the grapefruit league at 13-15 and they will head to Miami to play two exhibition games at Marlins Park on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.  They will fly home to New York after the game Saturday, have an off day on Sunday and open the season on Monday afternoon against the Houston Astros. 

The New York Mets are blown out by the Washington Nationals



The New York Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals on Wednesday afternoon.  The game took place at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Florida and the final score was 12-1.  Matt Harvey made the start which was his final tuneup before Opening Night on Sunday.  Harvey didn't pitch very well in only a couple of innings.  Yoenis Cespedes had a couple of hits and Travis Taijeron also had a couple of hits. 

Harvey pitched two innings giving up two hits and three runs with a walk and two strikeouts.  Noah Syndergaard pitched three innings giving up four hits and two runs with a strikeout, Zach Thornton pitched two innings giving up two hits and two runs with two walks and Hansel Robles pitched an inning giving up a hit.  Jeurys Familia pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up twohits and five runs with three of them being earned.  He walked two and struck out one and Antonio Bastardo pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one. 

Curtis Granderson drew a walk, Taijeron had two hits and an RBI, David Wright had a hit and Eric Campbell had a hit.  Cespedes had two hits, Juan Lagares drew a walk and Lucas Duda had a hit.  Neil Walker had a hit, Ty Kelly drew a walk and Michael Conforto drew a walk.  Asdrubal Cabrera drew a walk, Matt Reynolds had a hit and Cespedes hit a double.  Taijeron hit a homerun and the Mets were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.  Duda, Campbell and Familia each committed an error. 

In the first Ryan Zimmerman hit a three run homerun to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead.  In the fourth Jayson Werth hit a two run homerun pushing the Nationals lead to 5-0.  In the sixth Stephen Drew hit a two run homerun to make it 7-0 Nationals.  In the ninth Trea Turner reached on a fielding error and two runs scored, Reed Johnson hit an RBI single and Drew reached on a missed catch error to make it 11-0 Nationals.  Jhonatan Solano hit an RBI single and it was 12-0 Nationals.  In the bottom of the ninth Taijeron hit a solo homerun to get the Mets on the board and 12-1 would be the final score.  The New York Mets have finished their grapefruit league schedule and will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to take on the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night.

The New York Yankees shutout the Atlanta Braves



The New York Yankees defeated the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday afternoon.  The game took place at Champion Stadium in Orlando, Florida and the final score was 2-0.  Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and pitched great.  Aaron Hicks led the offense with three hits. 

Nova pitched six innings giving up two hits and no runs.  He walked one and struck out two.  Andrew Miller gave up a hit to the only batter he faced, he left after being struck in the right hand.  Dellin Betances pitched a perfect inning striking out the side, Bryan Mitchell pitched an inning giving up a hit and he walked two with a strikeout and Kirby Yates pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts. 

Dustin Fowler had a hit, Ronald Torreyes had a hit and Billy Fleming had a hit and an RBI.  Hicks had three hits, Dustin Ackley had a hit and Austin Romine had a hit and an RBI.  Vicente Conde drew a walk, Cesar Puello had a hit and Juan Silva had a hit.  Puello and Hicks each hit a double and Fowler and Fleming each hit a triple.  The Yankees were 3-16 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Hicks, Puello and Silva each had a stolen base. 

In the eighth Fleming hit an RBI triple and Romine hit an RBI single to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  2-0 would hold up as the final score.  The Yankees improved their spring record to 13-13 with a couple of tie games.  They will play the Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon in Lakeland, Florida.   

The New York Yankees defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates in a rain shortened game



The New York Yankees defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday afternoon.  The game took place at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida and the final score was 5-4 in five innings.  CC Sabathia started and pitched pretty well in his final exhibition game before the season starts.  Carlos Beltran had three RBI to lead the offense. 

Sabathia pitched four innings giving up three hits and two runs with two walks and two strikeouts.  Nick Goody pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs and Johnny Barbato pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit. 

Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit, Alex Rodriguez had a hit and Mark Teixeira had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Beltran had a hit and three RBI, Chase Headley had a hit and Starlin Castro had a hit and an RBI.  Castro hit a double and Beltran hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left one man on base. 

In the second Beltran hit a two run homerun giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  Castro hit an RBI double still in the second and it was 3-0 Yankees.  In the third Teixeira hit an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0 Yankees.  Beltran hit a sac fly to make it 5-0.  The Pirates got on the board in the fourth on a Jose Osuna two run single.  In the fifth Jacob Stallings hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 5-3 and Starling Marte hit an RBI single to make it 5-4 but that would be how the game ended. 

The Yankees spring record improved to 12-13.  They were also playing a game in Clearwater, Florida against the Philadelphia Phillies but that game got called off in the fourth inning.  Masahiro Tanaka was making his final start before what they hoped would be Opening Day.  He pitched pretty well giving up a run on seven hits in his four innings of work.  He did strike out five without walking a batter.  The Yankees were winning that game 7-1 when it was called.

New York Mets are shutdown by the St. Louis Cardinals



The New York Mets were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday afternoon.  The game took place at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida and the final score was 3-1.  Bartolo Colon started for the Mets and pitched pretty well.  The bullpen was good and the offense only managed six hits and no player had more than a hit. 

Colon pitched six innings giving up seven hits and three runs with five strikeouts.  Erik Goeddel pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Antonio Bastardo pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk and Hansel Robles retired the only batter that he faced. 

Curtis Granderson had a hit, Yoenis Cespedes had a hit and Neil Walker had a hit.  Alejandra De Aza had an RBI, Juan Lagares had a hit and Wilmer Flores had a hit.  Johnny Monell had a hit, Walker and Granderson each hit a double and the Mets were 0-6 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. 

In the first Matt Holliday hit a solo homerun to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.  In the second De Aza tied the game at one with an RBI ground out.  In the fourth Eric Fryer reached on a fielder's choice and a run scored to give the Cards a 2-1 lead.  Randal Grichuk hit an RBI double in the sixth to push the lead to 3-1 and that would be the final score. 

The Mets record fell to 7-14 with around five tie games this spring.  The Mets had some other bad news on Monday as they found out Matt Harvey would miss his start on Tuesday and be in jeapordy for Opening Day.  They are not saying what the exact injury or medical concern is at this point so stay tuned.  The Mets will be home on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Miami Marllins in Port St. Lucie, Florida.   

New York Yankees rally to beat the Detroit Tigers



The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers on Monday night.  The game took place at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida and the final score was 3-2.  Luis Cessa started for the Yankees and continued his impressive spring by pitching well.  The bullpen except for Nick Goody pitched well.  Mark Teixeira hit his first homerun of the spring and Dustin Ackley had two RBI. 

Cessa pitched three innings giving up a hit and a walk with four strikeouts.  Johnny Barbato pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one, Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect inning with a couple of strikeouts and Goody pitched an inning giving up three hits and two runs with three strikeouts.  Chasen Shreve pitched a perfect inning and Diego Moreno who was optioned to minor league camp after the game pitched two innings giving up a hit and he struck out one.  

Brett Gardner had a hit, Juan Silva had a hit and Carlos Corporan had a hit.  Teixeira had a hit and an RBI, Ackley had a hit and two RBI and Alex Rodriguez had a hit.  Starlin Castro had a hit, Pete Kozma had a hit and Aaron Hicks drew a walk.  Ackley hit a double and Teixeira hit a homerun.  The Yankees were 1-3 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. 

In the sixth Ian Kinsler hit a solo homerun to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, Justin Upton also hit a solo homerun to make it 2-0 Tigers.  In the seventh Teixeira hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1.  Ackley hit a two run double in the eighth to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead and that would be the final score.

The Yankees improved their spring record to 11-13 and they will play a split squad on Tuesday.  They will play the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater and the Pittsburgh Pirates at home in Tampa.  Masahiro Tanaka will make his final spring start which could determine if he will be the Opening Day starter next Monday at home against the Houston Astros.  CC Sabathia will also make his final spring start.   

The New York Mets and Washington Nationals play to a tie



The New York Mets and Washington Nationals played to a tie on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Florida and the final score was 4-4.  I believe this was the third straight tie game for the Mets which is pretty funny.  Steven Matz started and pitched ok despite being wild.  David Wright had a couple of hits and RBI, Neil Walker had a couple of hits and Michael Conforto had a couple of RBI. 

Matz pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up a hit and a run with four walks and five strikeouts.  Antonio Bastardo pitched to one batter and retired him, Logan Verrett pitched an inning giving up two hits and a run and Jim Henderson pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and two runs with one of them being earned.  Jerry Blevins pitched 2/3 of an inning walking a batter and Jeurys Familia pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one. 

Curtis Granderson had a hit, Wright had two hits and two RBI and Eric Campbell had a hit.  Yoenis Cespedes drew a walk, Walker had two hits and Conforto had a hit and two RBI.  Amed Rosario had two hits, Johnny Monell had a hit and Matz had a hit.  Travis d'Arnaud drew a walk, Granderson and Monell each hit a double and Walker hit a triple.  Wright and Conforto each hit a homerun and the Mets were 2-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Blevins committed an error, Monell had a passed ball and Granderson had an outfield assist. 

In the first Wright hit a solo homerun to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the second Conforto hit a two run homerun to extend their lead to 3-0.  In the fourth Clint Robinson hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 3-1.  In the fifth Wright hit an RBI single and it was 4-1 Mets.  Matt den Dekker hit an RBI single in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-2.  In the eighth Chris Heisey hit an RBI groundout to make it 4-3 and a throwing error led to another run to tie the game at four which would be the final score. 

The Mets spring record is now 7-13 with I think five tie games.  They will play the St. Louis Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida on Monday afternoon.

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon.  The game took place at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida and the final score was 5-2.  Nathan Eovaldi started for the Yankees and didn't pitch very well, the bullpen was good.  Brett Gardner and Austin Romine each had a hit and an RBI. 

Eovaldi pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and five runs with four of them being earned.  He walked two and struck out five.  Dellin Betances pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and he struck out one, Andrew Miller 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and Chasen Shreve pitched to two batters retiring them both.  Kirby Yates pitched a perfect inning. 

Gardner had a hit and an RBI, Michael O'Neill drew a walk and Mark Teixeira had a hit.  Tyler Austin had a hit, Brian McCann had a hit and Romine had a hit and an RBI.  Chase Headley drew a walk, Gardner hit a homerun and the Yankees were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Gardner committed an error and Eovaldi had a pickoff. 

In the third Danny Santana hit an RBI double giving the Twins a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Gardner hit a solo homerun to tie the game at one.  In the sixth Santana hit an RBI double giving the Twins a 2-1 lead.  Brian Dozier hit an RBI single and it was 3-1 Twins and they kept it going in the sixth.  Byung Ho Park hit an RBI single and Eduardo Escobar hit an RBI single to make it 5-1 Twins.  In the ninth Romine hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-2 and that would be the final score. 

The Yankees spring record fell to 10-13 with a couple of tie games.  They will play the Detroit Tigers on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
