Yankees at Mariners

The Yankees were beaten 3-2 on a two-run, walk-off homer by Ichiro Suzuki in the ninth inning last night. The Yankees lead the Red Sox by six games in the AL East and the Angels by 5.5 games for the best record in the American League and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Yankees are 3-4 in their last 7 games. The game is on at 10:10 on the YES network tonight. Here are the pregame notes via Peter Abraham. Sabathia is 7-0 with a 2.48 ERA in his last nine starts. He is 1-1 against Seattle this season. In 13.2 innings, CC has allowed seven runs on 13 hits and five walks while striking out 18. Fister, a 25-year-old rookie, beat the Yankees on Aug. 16. He allowed three runs on eight hits over seven innings in a 10-3 victory. Robbie Cano has hit in seven straight at 12 of 28. … A-Rod has 15 RBI in 15 games this month. … Johnny Damon is one shy of 25 homers, which would be his career high. … Nick Swisher is 9 of 25 with five extra-base hits. Melky Cabrera is 1 of his last 10, as is Jose Molina. Jerry Hairston is 1 of his last 11. Brian Bruney changed his number from 38 to 99. Maybe that will change his luck. Bruney has allowed 16 hits and 12 walks in his last 14.1 innings. Back with more later on.

Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS), Damon(LF), Tex(1B), A-rod(3B), Matsui(DH), Swisher(RF), Cano(2B), Cabrera(CF), Cervelli(C)

It is nice to see Cervelli get a start, I hope Ian Kennedy will get some more innings in before the end of the year.

RHP Ian Kennedy has been called up, this is great news considering what he has been through this season.

Yanks lose on a walkoffri

The Yankees were stunned last night by the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners won the game 3-2 and the reason the Yankees were stunned was that with 2 outs and no one on in the bottom of the ninth Mike Sweeney doubled off of Mariano Rivera and Ichiro Suzuki laced a 2 run walkoff homerun into the seats. Mariano Rivera had saved 36 straight before that so seeing MO blow a save is as rare as they come. A.J. Burnett pitched a great game going 7 innings giving up 7 hits and 1 run with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. That is great news for the Yankees as they need to get him going before the playoffs begin. Phil Hughes pitched a perfect 8th with a strikeout. Mariano did pick up his 1,000th strikeout of his career before blowing the save. The offense was silent for most of the night against Cy Young contender Felix Hernandez. They did start out the game with 2nd and 3rd no outs though but only managed to score 1 run which probably was the turning point of the game. Johnny Damon had 3 hits and Arod had a hit and sac fly. Derek Jeter led off the game with a single but that was all he managed. Johnny Damon was the only Yankee who had a multi hit game. The Yankees will try to even the series with CC Sabathia on the mound tonight.

Yankees at Mariners

UPDATE: 10:42- I forgot to mention this before but Hideki Matsui is tied for the major league lead in homeruns against lefties with 12 homeruns. Also when Hideki Matsui homered on Wednesday he joined A-rod, Big Tex and Nick Swisher as Yankees with at least 25 homeruns. The last time this happened was 1938 when Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Bill Dickey and Joe Gordon did it. The New York Yankees begin a 3 game series in Seattle tonight and a 6 game roadtrip. A.J. Burnett is on the mound against Felix Hernandez. If A.J. was pitching right it would be a great matchup, maybe this is the game where he puts it together and goes on a good run. I want to wish Peter Abraham good luck on his new job and hope that whoever replaces him can do half the job he has done but he is here for the next couple of weeks and the pregame notes and lineup are coming via him and the Lohud Yankees Blog. If you haven't already done so by the way please follow me on twitter and facebook. The Yankees are 5-2 against Seattle this season and were just in Seattle from Aug 13-16th. The Yankees magic number is 10, they are 7 up on the Red Sox for first place in the AL east and 6 up on the Angels for homefield advantage. MO needs 2 more strikeouts for 1,000 in his career. MO has allowed on run in his last 33 games and 33 innings. He has given up 15 hits, walked 8 and struckout 32. This guy is truly amazing, it has been a pleasure to watch him all of these years. The Yankees lead the majors with 48 come from behind victories. The Yankees are 41 games over 500 and haven't been 42 over since the end of the 2002 season. Hideki Matsui hit his 25th homerun of the season on Wednesday. He tied Don Baylor for most homeruns as a DH for the Yankees, Baylor did it in 1984. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Molina(C)

Yanks/Seattle Pitching Matchups

Tomorrow- Felix Hernandez vs A.J. Burnett Saturday- Doug Fister vs CC Sabathia Sunday- Joba Chamberlain vs Ian Snell Tomorrow is a interesting game because it is Felix Hernandez, this is the type of pitcher the Yankees will be facing in the playoffs and it will be interesting to see how A.J. reacts to this. Will he step up and be a solid #2 that the Yankees need or will he continue to struggle. The other two games the Yankees seem to have an advantage, I would hope they can get 2 out of 3 in this series before heading off to the house of horrows that is Angel Stadium.

Yankees Minor League Titles

The New York Yankees minor league system once again has been outstanding this season. The A-Tampa Yankees won the Florida State League title last night and the short season Staten Island Yankees won the NY/Penn League title. The Staten Island Yankees were represented by a lot of the recent draft picks. You can check out the stories about the games on www.milb.com the official minor league baseball site. The AAA Scranton Yankees are down 0-2 in their championship series but they have lost a lot of players to the big club such as Shelly Duncan, Ramiro Pena and Francisco Cervelli and a few relievers. They still have a shot though with 3 straight home games, of course they have to win every one of them. The big news out of AAA though is that Ian Kennedy you remember him pitched 3 hitless innings last night with 6 strikeouts. This is great news, he is a good kid who was thrust onto the scene maybe too quickly in NY and didn't do too well and then had surgery this year for a aneurysm in his arm. He now has pitched 5 scoreless innings in the minor league playoffs and will head to the instructional league and Arizona Fall league to build up his innings. Ian should be in AAA next year ready to go but he doesn't have much more to prove there as he has dominated the level. If Andy Pettitte comes back and Phil Hughes does become the 5th starter then there doesn't seem to be a spot for him but maybe he becomes a long reliever/spot starter or stays in AAA as a extra guy. Another scenario is the Yankees leaving Hughes where he is and Ian Kennedy being the 5th starter. This is all a ways off but interesting to think about, hopefully first the Yankees secure their 27th title then they can worry about this kind of stuff.

Yankees walkoff with another win

The New York Yankees for the 14th time this season had a walkoff win and got to taste some pie. This time the hero was rookie catcher Francisco Cervelli, what a good feeling for him as he filled in so admirably earlier in the year when Jorge Posada and Jose Molina were injured. Chad Gaudin got the start and was good as he pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 runs. He struck out 2 and had 1 walk. The Yankees are 4-0 when he starts even though he is only 1-0. Damaso Marte came on in the 6th in relief of Gaudin and got a strikeout. Brian Bruney gave up 2 hits and a run without recording an out as he continues to struggle. Phil Coke pitched a perfect inning and so did Phil Hughes with a strikeout. Mariano gave up a leadoff bunt single in the 9th but that was it. The offense was awake early by scoring 2 runs in the first inning on a Mark Teixeira double and Hideki Matsui single but after Tallett got taken out of the game in the 3rd inning they couldn't muster much offense until the 8th inning when Hideki Matsui hit a game tying 2 run homerun. Brett Gardner led off the ninth with a basehit and once again showed how valuable he can be in the postseason by stealing 2nd and getting to third on a Derek Jeter groundout. He scored the winning run on a Francisco Cervelli single and it was a great scene as Cervelli touched first and headed towards the outfield with all of his teammates chasing him. Francisco Cervelli has really shown the Yankees a lot this season and I don't see how he won't be the backup catcher next season. The Yankees now have a off day tomorrow and will head out to the west coast to start a 3 game series with Seattle on Friday. A.J. Burnett will try to get it together as he goes up against Felix Hernandez.

Jays at Yankees

UPDATE: 7:10PM- Jorge Posada has been suspended 3 games and is serving his suspension starting tonight. Shelly Duncan also got 3 games and is appealing. The New York Yankees finish their 2 game series with the Jays tonight after an exciting night last night. They also conclude their 10 game homestand which they are 6-3 on. The Yankees would like to get a win to make it 7 out of 10 on a pretty good homestand and fly out west for 6. The Yankees enter tonight with a 6 1/2 game lead on the Red Sox for first in the AL east and 6 on Anaheim for homefield advantage. The Sox and Angels will meet in Fenway tonight in game 2 of their 3 game series. Boston won last night behind a strong performance from the returning Dice K. Here are the pregame notes and lineup. Jorge Posada has been suspended 4 games and fined $30,000 by MLB. Jesse Carlson also got the same for the Blue Jays. Jorge is sitting out tonight with a sore neck, he should just take the 4 games now and get it over with. Cervelli can catch a couple of games and Molina also and they will be fine. The Yankees are 3-0 in Chad Gaudins starts and he has a 2.57 era in those starts. He last appeared on Sept 8th when he went 6 solid innings against Tampa Bay. The Yankees will be seeing Brian Tallett for the 5th time this season. He has a 5.00 era against the Yankees. They last saw him on Sept 6th when he allowed 5 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings. Mariano Rivera needs one strikeout for 1,000 in his career. Nick Swisher is 11 of 31 on the homestand with 10 runs scored, 6 xbh and 4 rbi's with 5 walks. Mark Teixeira has tripled in back to back games. His last triple before that was in Aug of 2007. This is what makes baseball so great, it is so weird and you just have no idea what you may see from game to game. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Hairston(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Swisher(RF) Cano(2B) Cabrera(CF) Molina(C)

Yanks go down but not without a fight literally

The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 10-4 tonight. Sergio Mitre got the start and was pretty awful giving up 4 homeruns and 6 runs in 5+ innings. Roy Halladay didn't have his best stuff as the Yankees had 11 hits off of him but only 2 runs. The Yankees just couldn't get the big hit off of him. The story of the game though is the bench clearing brawl that took place in the 8th inning. Aaron Hill was hit in the back by Mark Melancon in the top of the inning, Jorge Posada came up to bat and was clearly thrown behind on purpose. He had some words with the pitcher and then walked. He later scored and as he crossed the plate he elbowed the pitcher who was standing in front of the plate. A bench clearing brawl ensued with Posada really going at the pitcher and Shelly Duncan in the middle of course. Joe Girardi had a cut and his eye appeared to be swelling up. It will be interesting to see if there is any carryover with tomorrows game or if it is over. I would expect that Jorge Posada will be suspended for a few games which may not be the worst thing because at least he can get some rest and the Yankees have Francisco Cervelli up now. Robinson Cano, Hideki Matsui and Derek Jeter all had multi hit games and every guy in the starting lineup had a hit. Chad Gaudin will face Brian Tallett as the Yankees look to finish their homestand at 7-3 before heading to Seattle and Anaheim.

Blue Jays at Yankees

The New York Yankees begin a 2 game series with the Toronto Blue Jays tonight at 7:00PM on MY9. The matchup is Sergio Mitre vs Roy Halladay. Roy Halladay threw a 1 hit complete game shutout against the Yanks on Sept. 4th. Ramiro Pena had the lone hit a double. Sergio Mitre faced the Jays on Sept 6th and allowed 11 runs(9 of them earned) on 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings. He really didn't pitch that bad but the team was just out of it and played terrible defense and didn't help him at all. Here are the pregame notes and lineup from Peter Abraham. Brett Gardner has 21 stolen bases in 26 attempts this season. Over the last 50 years only 3 other Yankee rookies have stolen at least 21 bases in a season. Alfonso Soriano had 43 in 2001, Willie Randolph had 37 in 1976 and Jerry Kennedy had 25 in 1969. Gardner has been successful in 34 of his first 40 attempts in his career. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Swisher(RF) Gardner(CF) Andy Pettitte is being skipped because of shoulder fatigue. Chad Gaudin will start tomorrow in his place. They don't think its serious and should be knocked out with the extra rest.

Pitching Matchups for Yanks/Jays series

The New York Yankees will complete their 10 game homestand starting tonight with a 2 game series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Here are the pitching matchups. Tonight- Sergio Mitre vs Roy Halladay Tomorrow- TBA vs Brian Tallett This matchup tonight is one of the biggest mismatches you could ever have but the game isn't played on paper. The Yankees did get to Roy Halladay in his only appearance at Yankee Stadium earlier this season. Tomorrow we don't know who is pitching for the Yankees so it is hard to say. The Yankees will be happy to get a game here and move on to the westcoast.

Yanks beat Angels at their own game

The New York Yankees defeated the Angels 5-3 tonight in a playoff type of game. Joba Chamberlain got the start and pitched 4 good innings. He gave up 1 run on 4 hits with a couple of strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 run with 2 walks and a couple of strikeouts. Phil Coke pitched a very important 2/3 of an inning giving up 0 runs on 0 hits with a strikeout. Phil Hughes pitched the 8th and got himself in trouble with a couple of hits and a walk to load the bases with no outs and then got a double play and a soft line drive. He gave up the lead but showed great poise to get out of it without allowing anymore. Mariano gave up a walk but nothing else in locking down his 36th straight save. The offense was led by Mark Teixeira who had a single, double and triple. He had a couple of rbi's. Hideki Matsui had a hit and a walk, Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher each had 2 hits and a rbi. The biggest play of the game though was Brett Gardner coming off of the bench and pinch running for Mark Teixeira in the 8th inning. He stole third and scampered home on the wild throw to give the Yankees the lead before they tacked on another run. The Yankees beat the Angels at their own game and that is great to see. The Yankees have beaten the Angels 3 out of 4 at home this season and are 0-3 in Anaheim so homefield is huge as they may see them again in the ALCS. The Yankees begin a 2 game series with Toronto tomorrow, Sergio Mitre will take on Roy Halladay.

Angels at Yankees

The New York Yankees play a makeup game with the Angels tonight at 7:00PM from the Stadium. They enter tonight 5 games up on them for homefield advantage. They are 2-4 against them this season and 18-32 against them over the last 5 years including postseason. It is a understatement to say the Yankees have their problems with the Angels. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via Peter Abraham and his Louhud Yankees Blog. Joba is 1-3 with a 7.76 era in his last 7 games allowing 40 hits and 18 walks over 29 innings. Opponents have hit 323 against him over that stretch. Joba has faced the Angels once which came on July 10th. He allowed 5 runs on 9 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Johnny Damon needs one homer to reach his career high of 25. Mariano Rivera who hasn't pitched since last Tuesday is 2 strikeouts shy of 1,000. A-rod is 18 of 42 this month with 6 runs scored, 14 rbi's and 5 xbh. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Swisher(RF) Cabrera(CF)

Football begins with a couple of victories

The New York Giants and New York Jets both opened their seasons with wins. The Jets defeated the Texans by the score of 24-7 and the Giants won by the score of 23-17. I will start with the Jets who saw Mark Sanchez had a impressive first game as a pro. He was 18 of 31 for 272 yards and 1 touchdown and a interception. Thomas Jones had 107 yards rushing and Leon Washington contributed 60 yards rushing, he also had 24 yards recieving. Dustin Keller had 94 yards recieving and Jerricho Cotchery had 90 yards recieving. Chansi Stuckey had 64 yards recieving. Rex Ryan is known for defense and the Jets defense just looked awesome. Joe Namath gave Sanchez a pregame pep talk and it seemed to work as there weren't many negatives, he really had a sparkling debut. The Giants score was closer then the game really was as Washington scored a late TD. The Giants defense was really good other then that, one of the touchdowns scored by the Redskins was on a fake FG and another FG was because Eli Manning threw a interception setting them up perfectly for at least a FG. Justin Tuck had a great game with 1 1/2 sacks and being all over the field. Osi Umineyora didn't have a great game but he did have one big play where he caused a fumble and ran it back 37 yards for a touchdown. Eli Manning had a pretty good game being 20 of 29 with 256 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Jacobs only had 46 rushing yards, Ahmad Bradshaw had 60 rushing. The Giants spread out their passing attack, Steve Smith had 6 catches for 80 yards, Kevin Boss had 3 catches for 62 yards and Mario Manningham had 3 catches for 58 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was the first of his career. Hakeem Nicks had a couple of catches for 18 yards but left the game with a sprained ankle. Domenick Hixon only had 1 catch for 10 yards and Brandon Jacobs had 2 for 17 yards and Bradshaw had 3 for 11 yards. Lawrence Tynes was 3 for 3 in field goals. The Giants now will go on the road for 3 straight which will be difficult. The Jets will come home and face the Patriots.

Yanks avoid sweep

The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 13-3 this afternoon. CC Sabathia got the start and didn't have his overpowering stuff but pitched 7 good innings regardless. He allowed 3 runs with only 1 strikeout. 1 of the runs was a gift from Johnny Damon though when he forgot how many outs there were and almost threw the ball into the stands as the Baltimore runner tagged up from second and scored. It was an embarrassing moment for Johnny and the Yankees as they played poor all weekend. The Yankees after that though woke up, or it was probably more after Joe Girardi and A-rod got tossed in the sixth inning. A-rod struck out with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 5th inning on a pitch was clearly outside but it was fairly close. A-rod wasn't happy but the next inning went on then before the Yankees came up to bat again he was tossed for apparantly arguing from the bench and Joe Girardi went crazy getting in the umpires face, throwing his hat to the ground and getting so angry that I thought he was going to hit the umpire. At the end of the argument another umpire had to step in between Joe and the umpire. He hopes not to get suspended but I am sure MLB will not be happy with his actions. Phil Hughes pitched a effective 8th inning once again bouncing back from giving up the lead his last time out and Brian Bruney and Edwar Ramirez finished off the game. Hideki Matsui had a 5 rbi game and Derek Jeter added 3 more hits to his record total. A-rod before getting thrown out had a rbi double. Mark Teixeira had 2 hits and 2 rbi's, Robinson Cano had 3 hits and Nick Swisher had 2 hits. Melky Cabrera had 2 hits and 4 rbi's. The Yankees play a makeup game tomorrow with the Angels in a battle for homefield advantage.

Are you ready for some football?

The football season starts today locally with the Jets and Giants both in action. This blog is called Yanks and More so I have to start covering the football as well although my main focus will be the Yanks and baseball as we are nearing the playoffs and hopefully a world series run for the New York Yankees. I am going to do a quick preview. The Giants take on the Redskins at home and I would expect a tough defensive battle. The Giants will run the ball as lot and try to control the clock. I would expect the Giants to win 17-10 somewhere in that range. The Jets start a new era with Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez. I would expect the Jets to be competitive this season but don't get too excited. This is going to be about growth and the future. I think Sanchez could be very good and should be the franchise quarterback for a long time but lets see how he develops. The game today in Texas against the Texans will be very e tough. I would say then Texans win 24-21. I will start going more in depth next week with the games and tonight or tomorrow will have the postgame recaps and reaction.

Yanks try to avoid sweep

The Yankees have lost 2 straight but remain 7 1/2 games ahead of the Red Sox and 5 ahead of the Angels for homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. Here are some notes and the lineup via Peter Abraham. The Yankees have been outscored by the Orioles 17-7 in this series. The Yankees are 12-5 against them this season. The Yankees haven't lost 3 straight since July 30-Aug 1st in Chicago. They haven't lost 3 straight at home since the beginning of the season when A-rod wasn't around. CC is 6-0 with a 2.31 era in his last 8 starts. He is 3-1 with a 2.63 era against the O's this season and hasn't allowed a homerun in 27 1/3 innings. A-rod is 17 of 40 this month with 13 rbi's. Derek Jeter is in a mini slump going 6 of his last 25. MO has allowed one run in his last 30 appearances. Since June 16th he has as many rbi's as runs allowed. This guy is just a machine, no doubt the best there ever was. I can't wait to see him inducted into the Hall of Fame. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Tex(1B) A-rod(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Swisher(RF) Cabrera(CF)
