New York Yankees news and notes after the home opener

The Yankees did announce some injury news after the game today.  Mark Teixeira has a grade one

strain of his leg.  He should be back right after the 15 days are up with him.  They were actually very

happy and encouraged by that, the Yankees were fearing worse with him.  They also announced

that the closer David Robertson is hitting the disabled list with a groin strain.  He will be put on the

15 day DL tomorrow and the Yankees will have a corresponding roster move.  Robertson said he

doesn't feel that bad but doesn't want to leave the bullpen shorthanded right now.  It seems that

these two injuries are minor and in the short term they can deal with them.

Shawn Kelley appears to be the one who will get the bulk of the time at closer.  The other guys will have to be moved up,  you may keep seeing Warren in the 8th as he has looked really good and maybe Dellin Betances in the seventh or Vidal Nuno and David Phelps.  We will have to see how Joe Girardi handles it.  he hasn't had any real set roles out there as of yet anyway.  He is still sorting through guys and kind of testing them out to see where they fit.  The Yankees staff as a whole has been really good so far this season.

There was a first for Jeter in this game.  He was caught not hustling on a double.  He thought it was a homerun and I think everyone else did also but it wasn't.  He had to get a move on to get into second and thankfully he did to avoid embarrassment.  He said the guys were giving him a hard time but he is Jeter and you never see it so he kind of gets a pass anyway.  Jeter joked and said he wanted to test to make sure his legs were still good.  He also said you won't see that happen again and I would have to believe that.

It is pretty amazing that the Yankees last four starters haven't issued a walk and they have struck out 23 in 25 1/3 innings.  The save by Shawn Kelley was the first of his career.  Kelley did say he was a little nervous at first but once he threw the first pitch it was back to business.  Robertson has only been on the disabled list one other time and that was his first crack at trying to take over for MO.  He said that every time he gets the chance something stops him from it.  He said he will get healthy though and get back and he seemed upbeat that it would be quick.

Here is Jeter talking about the home opener.  "It is kind of tough for me to be reflective on something that 's at the beginning of the season.  It's my last home opener , but it's the first game here this year.  It's kind of hard for me to juggle having emotions for the last when it's also at the same time the first- if that makes any sense.  Home Openers are special.  I'm pretty sure next year when they have their home opener , I'll miss it a little bit.  I'm excited that we've gotten the season underway here, so today was just move excitement than anything."

The New York Yankees win in Derek Jeter's final home opener

The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles on Monday afternoon.  The game took place

at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 4-2.  Hiroki Kuroda started for the

Yankees and pitched well.  The bullpen also pitched well as they used four relievers.  Alfonso

Soriano had two hits, Jacoby Ellsbury also had a couple of hits.

Kuroda pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up eight hits and two runs.  He didn't walk a batter and struck out four.  It was the fourth straight game that a Yankees starter didn't allow a walk.  Matt Thornton faced one batter and retired him, David Phelps faced one batter and retired him and Adam Warren pitched an inning walking a batter and striking out two.  Shawn Kelley picked up his first save pitching a 1-2-3 inning.

Ubaldo Jimenez started for the Orioles and took the loss.  He pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up eight hits and four runs with five walks and four strikeouts.  Zach Britton pitched two innings giving up a walk and striking out two and Ryan Webb pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with a couple of strikeouts.

Brett Gardner had a hit, Derek Jeter had a hit and Ellsbury had two hits and an RBI.  Carlos Beltran had a hit and drew a walk, Soriano had two hits and drew a walk and Brian Roberts drew a walk.  Kelly Johnson had an RBI and drew two walks and Yangervis Solarte had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.

Jeter hit a double and the Yankees were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Ellsbury was caught stealing and had an outfield assist.  McCann had a pickoff at second base.

David Lough drew a walk, Nick Markakis had a hit and Adam Jones had a hit.  Chris Davis had a hit, Matt Wieters had two hits and an RBI and Nelson Cruz had two hits and an RBI.  Jonathan Schoop had a hit which was a double, Markakis hit a double and Davis hit a double.  The Orioles were 3-8 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Schoop was picked off of second base.

In the third Jeter grounded into a double play and a run scored to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth Wieters hit an RBI single to tie the game at one.  The Yankees answered back in the bottom of the fourth with a run.  Solarte hit an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.  In the fifth Ellsbury hit an RBI single and Johnson had an RBI walk to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.  The Orioles would cut the lead to 4-2 in the seventh on a Cruz RBI single but that would be the final score.

The Yankees have won four out of their last five.  The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Tuesday afternoon.  Ivan Nova will make the start for the Yankees.

New York Yankees notes as they head home finally

The New York Yankees opening road trip was pretty good.  It didn't start out too well with two

losses to open the season in Houston.  The Yankees then finished with three wins in four games

including winning two out of three in Toronto.  Mark Teixeira was hurt over this weekend which

wasn't a good thing but he will be on the 15 day DL and then they will see.  He doesn't seem to have

a bad hamstring strain.  The Yankees pitching overall has been great and their offense has struggled

especially with power.  I would expect the offense to pick it up especially at home.

Jeter said he likes how they have been playing and that they have pitched well.  He said it is always good to go home especially after a win.  Sabathia was much better in his second start on Sunday.  His final line isn't real impressive but he mostly had good innings.  His only bad inning was his last in the sixth inning and he didn't get killed that inning.  Toronto found some holes otherwise it would of been a really good start.  CC said "It felt pretty good, I'd take two pitches back in the sixth inning.  the cutter that Navarro  hit four a double and the ball Kratz hit down the line but other than that , I felt I pitched pretty good."

The Yankees hit their first homerun on Sunday.  It came from an unlikely source in Brett Gardner.  I would expect that number to go way up after a nine game home stand.  The Yankees will play three against the Baltimore Orioles, four against the Boston Red Sox and then two against the Chicago Cubs.  In the American League right now only the Kansas City Royals have a lower slugging percentage than the Yankees.  They also have one of the lowest scoring teams in the league which you would expect right now.  I don't think that will be the case at the end of the year though.  The Yankees are a lot different than last year.  They have some big time players and power in their lineup this season.

Alfonso Soriano snapped a 17 game hitless streak on Sunday.  He has always been a streaky hitter and I would expect him to get it going at home over the next nine games.  It looks like Adam Warren may be emerging as the early seventh inning guy.  He has been pitching really well also after having a good spring.

Jeter passed Paul Molitor on the all-time hits list Sunday.  He is now eighth all-time and has 99 hits to go to get to Carl Yastrzemski.  Sabathia made his 400th career start and is now 7-1 career at Rogers Centre and 15-4 all-time against the Blue Jays.  August 7th of last year was the last time he didn't walk anyone.  Sabathia said "This is the key to our team, pitching, and trying to give the bullpen as much rest as we can.  So try to go deep into games and keep those guys fresh.  We have a really good staff, and we just want to try to keep it up."

The New York Mets fail to earn sweep over the Cincinnati Reds

The New York Mets were defeated by the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon.  The final score was

2-1 and the game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York.  Jon Niese made his first start of the

season and pitched well.  Ike Davis led the offense with a couple of hits and Juan Lagares had their

only RBI.

Niese pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up six hits and two runs with a walk and four strikeouts.  Niese took the loss, Gonzalez Germen pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a walk and two strikeouts, Kyle Farnsworth pitched an inning and he gave up a hit and a walk with a strikeout and Jose Valverde pitched an inning giving up a hit and two strikeouts.

Alfredo Simon started for the Reds and pitched seven innings.  He gave up four hits and a run with a walk and six strikeouts.  Manny Parra pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts.

Eric Young Jr. had a hit, Davis had two hits and Lagares had a hit and an RBI.  Niese drew a walk, Davis and Young each hit a double.  The Mets were 1-3 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.  Lagares was caught stealing.

Heisey had a hit, Brandon Phillips had two hits and Joey Votto had an RBI.  Ryan Ludwick had two hits and an RBI, Jay Bruce drew two walks and Todd Frazier had a hit and drew a walk.  Brayan Pena and Simon each had a hit.  The Reds were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.  Pena had a stolen base and Phillips was caught stealing.

In the second inning Lagares hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the sixth the Reds took a 2-1 lead and that would be the final score.  Votto hit a sacrifice fly and Ludwick hit an RBI single.  The Mets finished their first homestand of the season with a 2-4 record but they did win two out of three in this series.  The Mets will have the day off on Monday and start a three game series in Atlanta on Tuesday night.

The New York Yankees finish their opening road trip with a win in Toronto

The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon.  The final score was

6-4 and the game took place at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada.  CC Sabathia started for the

second time this season.  He was much better than his first start and the bullpen was very good.

Derek Jeter had two hits, Brett Gardner and Kelly Johnson each had two RBI.

Sabathia earned his first win of the season.  He pitched six innings giving up seven hits and four runs.  He walked none and struck out six.  Adam Warren pitched a perfect inning, Shawn Kelley gave up a hit in a scoreless inning and David Robertson earned his second save pitching an inning and giving up a hit and a walk.

Drew Hutchison took the loss for the Blue Jays.  He pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up six hits and six runs with three walks and six strikeouts.  Todd Redmond pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up three hits and a walk with five strikeouts, Steve Delabar pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Esmil Rogers pitched a perfect inning.

Gardner had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk, Jeter had two hits and Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and an RBI.  Brian McCann had a hit and drew a walk, Alfonso Soriano had his first hit of the season and Johnson had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk.  Brian Roberts drew a walk, Ichiro Suzuki had a hit and Yangervis Solarte had a hit and an RBI.  Johnson and Solarte each hit a double.  Gardner hit the Yankees first homerun of the season.  The Yankees were 3-13 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Gardner, Roberts and Suzuki each stole a base in the game.

Melky Cabrera had a hit and an RBI for the Blue Jays.  Maizur Izturis had two hits, Jose Bautista had a hit and Edward Encarnacion had two hits.  Dionar Navarro had a hit and an RBI, Erik Kratz had a hit and two RBI and Brett Lawrie had a hit.  Adam Lind drew a walk, Navarro hit a double and Encarnacion hit a triple.  Cabrera hit a homerun and the Blue Jays were 2-6 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.

The Yankees scored three runs in the first inning.  Gardner walked, stole second and got moved to third and then home on ground outs.  Johnson hit a two run double to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead.  Cabrera hit a solo homerun in the first to cut the lead to 3-1.  Solarte hit an RBI double and Gardner hit a two run homerun in the fourth to give the Yankees a 6-1 lead.  In the sixth Sabathia got into some trouble and gave up three runs.  Navarro hit an RBI double and Kratz hit a two run single to cut the Yankees lead to 6-4.  6-4 would be the final score as the Yankees bullpen nailed it down in the final three innings.

The Yankees took two out of three in the series and finished their first road trip 3-3.  The Yankees will have their home opener on Monday afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles.  It will be a special day in the Bronx as it is Derek Jeter last home opener and the core four will be reunited.  Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera will throw out first pitches to Jeter and Jorge Posada.
