The Giants comeback comes up just short this week

The New York Giants lost to the San Francisco 49ers by the score of 27-20 on Sunday evening. The Giants and niners traded field goals in the early part of the game and it was a three point game at the half. The game started getting away from the Giants at the beginning of the fourth quarter but they were able to make it a one touchdown game and then came storming down the field in the final minutes on a long drive but were stopped two yards short of a first down, and about 15 yards from the end zone.
Eli Manning had a pretty good game but he did throw two interceptions in this game which cost the Giants. Manning was 26 of 40 throwing for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Jacobs was the leading rusher with 55 yards on 18 carries. D.J. Ware had nine carries for 34 yards and Manning had two for four yards. The rushing game once again wasn’t much of a factor. The leading receiver was Victor Cruz who had six catches for 84 yards. Mario Manningham also had six catches and it was for 77 yards, Hakeem Nicks had two catches for 41 yards and Jake Ballard had three catches for 35 yards. Ware had five catches for 34 yards. Lawrence Tynes was two for two in field goals and made two extra points.

The Giants defense did have one interception. Kenny Phillips and Antrel Rolle each had four tackles to lead the team. Osi Umenyiora and Linval Joseph each had a sack.

The Giants got on the board first with a field goal. Tynes made a 23 yard field goal after a 14 play drive to start the game. The 49ers answered with a 36 yard field goal after a 12 play drive. Tynes made a 25 yard field goal after a 13 play drive in the second quarter. David Akers answered back with a 52 yard field goal to make it a 6-6 game. Akers then made a 39 yard field goal and gave the niners a 9-6 lead which was how the half would end. In the third quarter the niners made a 28 yard field goal to take a 12-6 lead. The Giants scored the first touchdown of the game in the third quarter. Manningham caught a 13 yard touchdown pass to make it a 13-12 game in favor of the Giants. In the fourth quarter the niners got a 31 yard touchdown pass from Vernon Davis. Kendall Hunter had a 17 yard touchdown run to make it a 26-13 game. The extra point was good and made it a 27-13 game. After the first touchdown of the quarter making it 18-13 niners they went for two and converted making it a 20-13 game. The Giants would get a 32 yard touchdown completion by Hakeem Nicks making it a 27-19 game and the extra point made it 27-20. The Giants would have a long drive to end the game but with just over 30 seconds left the Giants were stopped on a fourth and two around the 15 yard line of the niners.

The Giants remain in first place in the NFC East. They have a 6-3 record and are one game ahead of the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants will return home and take on the Philadelphia Eagles next week. The Giants then will play at New Orleans and home against the Packers. They have a brutal schedule and this game was in their grasp but they weren’t able to win it. It will be interesting to see how the Giants bounce back next week against an Eagles team that has really struggled and the Giants have already beaten this season.
