The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 4-2 on Wednesday night. The game took place at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. Sean Marcum started for the Mets and pitched pretty well, the bullpen wasn’t great. Rick Ankiel and Marcum each had two hits to lead the offense.
Marcum took his fourth loss of the season pitching 6 2/3 innings giving up five hits and three runs with two being earned. They had one walk and three strikeouts, Scott Rice pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a walk and LaTroy Hawkins pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with two walks and two strikeouts.
Daniel Murphy had a hit, David Wright had a hit and John Buck had a hit and drew a walk. Ankiel had two hits and two RBI, Marcum had two hits. Murphy hit a double, Ankiel hit a homerun and the Mets were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Wright and Murphy each had a stolen base and Buck was caught stealing. Wright and Murphy each committed an error and Baxter had an outfield assist.
Shelby Miller pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up four hits and no runs with a walk and six strikeouts. Randy Choate pitched to two batters retiring them both, Seth Maness won his third game of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and giving up three hits and two runs and Trevor Rosenthal pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. Mujica saved his 11th game of the season pitching a perfect inning.
Carlos Beltran drew a walk, Matt Holliday had a hit and Allen Craig drew a walk. John Jay had a hit and an RBI, Cruz had a hit and an RBI and Yadier Molina had a hit and an RBI. Daniel Descalso had a hit, Pete Kozma had a hit and Ty Wigginton drew a walk. Jay hit a double and the Cardinals were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Jay had an outfield assist.
In the fourth Jay hit an RBI double, Cruz hit an RBI single to make it 2-0 Cardinals. In the seventh Ankiel hit a two run homerun to tie the game at two. In the bottom of the seventh Kozma scored on a wild pitch to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead and Molina hit an RBI single in the eighth to give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead which would be the final score.
The Mets record dropped to 14-23 and the Cardinals record improved to 26-13. The two teams will play game four of their four game series on Thursday afternoon. The Mets have lose three straight to already lose this series and six straight losses overall.
