The New York Mets drop a tight one to the Chicago Cubs



The New York Mets were defeated by the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.  The game took place at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois and the final score was 2-1.  Zack Wheeler started and pitched well for the Mets.  Curtis Granderson had three hits to lead the offense.

Wheeler pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up two hits and no runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.  Josh Edgin pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a run with two strikeouts, Vic Black pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and had two strikeouts and Scott Rice took his second loss of the season pitching 2/3 of an inning and giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout. 

Jake Arrieta pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and a run with three walks and two strikeouts.  Brian Schlitter pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with a strikeout, James Russell pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and striking out one and Neil Ramirez pitched 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout.  Hector Rondon won his first game of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit. 

Matt den Dekker had two hits, Daniel Murphy had a hit and David Wright drew two walks.  Granderson had three hits and an RBI, Lucas Duda had a hit and drew a walk and Wilmer Flores had a hit.  Travis d'Arnaud had a hit and the Mets were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base.  den Dekker and Granderson each had a stolen base. 

Emilio Bonifacio had a hit and drew a walk, Anthony Rizzo had a hit and Luis Valbuena drew a walk.  Nate Shierholtz had three hits and an RBI, Chris Coghlan had a hit and an RBI.  Coghlan had a homerun and the Cubs were 1-3 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Bonifacio had a stolen base, Schierholtz was caught stealing and Rizzo committed an error.    

In the first Granderson had a sacrifice fly to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.  In the eighth the Cubs tied it and then won it in the ninth.  Coghlan hit a solo homerun in the eighth and in the ninth Schierholtz hit an RBI single to give the Cubs the 2-1 win.  The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Wednesday night.
