The New York Yankees use the long ball to defeat the Boston Red Sox



The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 6-0.  Vidal Nuno started and pitched well and Brian McCann, Kelly Johnson and Brett Gardner each hit a homerun. 

Nuno pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings.  He gave up two hits and two walks and struck out five to earn his second win of the season.  Dellin Betances pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings giving up a hit and a walk and he struck out two, Adam Warren pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Matt Thornton pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. 

Brandon Workman pitched seven innings giving up seven hits and four runs.  He walked two and struck out five and lost his first game of the season.  Craig Breslow pitched an inning giving up two hits and two runs. 

Gardner had a hit and an RBI, Derek Jeter had two hits and Jacoby Ellsbury had a hit and drew a walk.  Mark Teixeira had two hits and an RBI, McCann had two hits and two RBI and Johnson had a hit, two RBI and drew a walk.  Ellsbury hit a double and the Yankees were 1-4 with runners in scoring positon and left five men on base. 

Brock Holt had a hit and drew a walk, David Ortiz drew a walk and Mike Napoli drew a walk.  Jonny Gomes had a hit, Stephen Drew had a hit and Holt and Drew each hit a double.  The Red Sox were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. 

The Yankees scored a run in the first inning on a Teixeira sacrifice fly.  In the fourth they hit back-to-back homeruns to make it 4-0.  Johnson hit a two run  homerun and Gardner a solo homerun.  The Yankees made it 6-0 in the eighth on a McCann two run homerun. 

The two teams will play game two of their three game series on Saturday night.  Masahiro Tanaka will face off against Jon Lester in a premier pitching matchup.
