New York Yankees offense jumps on Chicago Cubs for victory


The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night.  The game took place at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois and the final score was 11-6.  Jordan Montgomery started for the Yankees and he pitched well.  The Yankees offense was led by Aaron Hicks who had four hits and Starlin Castro had three hits. 

Montgomery pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up three hits and three runs with two of them being earned.  He walked four and struck out three.  Montgomery picked up his second career victory and second of the season.  Tyler Clippard pitched to one batter and retired him, Tommy Layne pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and three runs with a walk and Adam Warren pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up a hit and striking out three. 

Brett Anderson started for the Cubs and he pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up six hits and five runs.  He struck out one and took his second loss of the season.  Felix Pena pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up five hits and three runs with two of them being earned.  He walked none and struck out three.  Rob Zastryzny pitched four innings and gave up three hits and three runs with four walks and a strikeout.  Miguel Montero the catcher pitched a scoreless inning with a couple of walks. 

Brett Gardner had two hits, Hicks had four hits and three RBI and Castro had three hits, three RBI and drew a walk.  Gary Sanchez had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Didi Gregorius had two hits and drew a walk, Chase Headley had a hit and two RBI and Chris Carter drew a walk.  Montgomery drew a walk, Rob Refsnyder drew a walk and Gardner, Castro, Headley and Hicks each hit a double.  Castro and Hicks each hit a homerun and the Yankees were 5-14 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Hicks had a stolen base and Gregorius committed an error.  Sanchez had a passed ball. 

Ben Zobrist had a hit and an RBI, Kris Bryant drew a walk and Addison Russell had a hit.  Willson Contreras drew a walk, Albert Almora Jr.  had a hit and drew a walk and Javier Baez had two hits and an RBI.  Pena drew a walk, Montero had a hit and two RBI and John Jay had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.  Baez and Jay each hit a double and Zobrist and Russell each hit a triple.  The Cubs were 2-10 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Anderson committed an error and Bryant also committed an error. 

In the first Hicks hit an RBI single, Castro hit an RBI double, Sanchez hit an RBI single and Headley hit a two-run double to make it 5-0 Yankees.  In the third Carter reached on a force attempt error and pushed the score to 6-0.   In the fourth Castro hit a two-run homerun and extended the Yankees lead to 8-0.  In the fifth Jay hit an RBI ground out to get the Cubs on the board at 8-1.  Zobrist reached on a throwing error and the score was 8-2.  In the seventh Zobrist hit an RBI triple to cut the lead to 8-3.  Hicks hit a three-run homerun in the eighth to extend the Yankees lead to 11-3.  In the bottom of the eighth Baez hit an RBI single to make it 11-4 and Montero hit a two-run single to cut the lead to 11-6 which would be the final score. 

The two teams will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday night.  The Yankees will be going for the sweep.
