New York Mets defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates


The New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.  The game took place at Citi Field in Flushing, New York and the final score was 4-2.  Robert Gsellman started for the Mets and he pitched well.  The Mets bullpen also pitched well and Neil Walker and Lucas Duda each had two hits to lead the offense. 

Gsellman pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and two runs.  He walked two and struck out six and won his fourth game of the season.  Fernando Salas pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one, Jerry Blevins pitched an inning giving up a hit and he struck out two and Addison Reed pitched two innings giving up two hits and he walked one and earned his eighth save of the season. 

Tyler Glasnow pitched five innings giving up five hits and four runs.  He walked three and struck out five and took his fifth loss of the season.  Johnny Barbato pitched two innings giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts and Wade LeBlanc pitched a perfect inning. 

Michael Conforto drew two walks, Asdrubal Cabrera drew a walk and Jay Bruce had a hit and an RBI.  Walker had two hits, two RBI and drew a walk, Duda had two hits and Wilmer Flores had a hit and an RBI.  Gsellman had a hit, Duda hit a double and walker, Bruce and Flores each hit a homerun.  The Mets were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.  Walker was caught stealing and Cabrera committed an error. 

Adam Frazier had a hit, Josh Harrison had two hits and Gregory Polanco had an RBI.  David Freese had a hit, Josh Bell had a hit and an RBI and Andrew McCutchen drew two walks.  Jordy Mercer had three hits, Elias Diaz had two hits and drew a walk and Mercer hit two doubles and Bell hit a homerun.  The Pirates were 1-12 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.  Diaz had a passed ball. 

In the first Walker hit a two-run homerun to make it 2-0 Mets.  In the second Bell hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the third Polanco hit an RBI ground out to tie the game at two.  Bruce hit a solo homerun in the third to give the Mets a 3-2 lead and in the fourth Flores hit a solo homerun to extend the lead to 4-2 which would be the final score. 

The two teams have split the first two games and will play the rubber game on Sunday afternoon.
