New York Yankes come up just short in loss to the Boston Red Sox

 

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.  The game took place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York and the final score was 3-2.  Gerrit Cole started for the Yankees and he pitched well as did the bullpen.  DJ LeMahieu and Isiah Kiner-Falefa led the offense with two hits each but the offense didn’t do much. 

Cole pitched six innings giving up seven hits and two runs with a walk and six strikeouts.  Cole took his first loss of the season.  Albert Abreu pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout, Nick Ramirez pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout and Jimmy Cordero pitched 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. 

Garrett Whitlock started for the Red Sox and he pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and two runs with only one being earned.  He walked one and struck out six and won his third game of the season.  Nick Pivetta pitched to two batters and retired them both, Chris Martin pitched a perfect inning and Kenley Jansen pitched an inning giving up two hits and he struck out one and earned his 14th save of the season. 

LeMahieu had two hits, Josh Donaldson had a hit and an RBI and Giancarlo Stanton had a hit.  Kiner-Falefa had two hits, Billy McKinney had a hit and Gleyber Torres had a hit and drew a walk.  Anthony Volpe had a hit, Donaldson hit a homerun and the Yankees were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Kiner-Falefa had a stolen base and was caught stealing. 

Alex Verdugo had two hits, Justin Turner had two hits and Rafael Devers had two hits and an RBI.  Adam Duvall drew a walk, Triston Casas had two hits, an RBI and drew a walk.  Kolten Wong had a hit, Kike Hernandez had a hit and an RBI and Devers hit a double and a homerun.  Hernandez also hit a homerun and the Red Sox were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Wong committed an error. 

In the fourth Casas hit an RBI single giving the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.  In the sixth Devers hit a solo homerun pushing the Red Sox lead to 2-0.  In the bottom of the sixth Donaldson hit a solo homerun cutting the lead to 2-1.  In the seventh Hernandez hit a solo homerun increasing the Red Sox lead to 3-1.  IN the bottom of the seventh Torres drew an RBI walk to make it 3-2 and that would be the final score. 

The two teams will play game two of three on Saturday night.
